By this Sunday, if not sooner, I will have relocated to sunny Atlanta, home of Martin Luther King, Blind Willie McTell and Crunk. Moving from the 4 tournament-a-month New England Vintage scene is going to be a shock, I'm sure, so I'm going to try and make the most of what I hear is a budding scene down south. I definitely want to hear from anyone in the area, whether I know you or not, about the magic scene, gaming in general, concerts, jobs, anything I shouldn't miss out on. (I'm looking at you Zherbus) I'm going to miss New England, but I'm optimistic. Wish me luck already!

Hey, what's up? This is Cody Vinci.
Type 1 in the GA,SC and NC has been pretty good lately. We had a 30 person event in NC a few weeks ago with 6 people from GA.
There are also type 1 events in Atlanta held by Brandon Todaro (taterbeme). You have Steve O'Connell right near Brandon. Also George Goanos (bdg4life) and his 2 kids play.
Becker is in Charleston, SC. There have been type 1 events there, and Becker plans on continuing these events starting as early as January.
I am planning another event for November 17th for a Recall. There should be around 30 people again, and you could get a ride if you want to come.
Hope that helps a little. In no time at all there should be one event per month in either SC, GA and NC. I've held about 8 events in NC in the last year or so.
-Cody
p.s. I think you were in my room in Roanoke when I was sleeping and got pissed when Anusien invited 10 people over at 6 AM even though it wasn't his room. Good times.

Welcome to the beautiful South Andy! The weather is always warm, the people are great, and the Vintage tournaments are once a month. If you're ever looking to make the trip up North for a TMD open or an SCG, there's a decent chance I'll be up for making the trip, so let me know. In 2 weeks (the 13th) there's a tournament in Atlanta for an Emerald and 4 Forces, so be sure to keep that date open ( http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=33963.0). Hope to see you then. -Eric

The problem the South has is we have 3 cities with vintage scenes, all which happen to be about 4 to 5 hours apart from each other. Making that trip twice every three months (for monthly tournaments that alternate locations) is much more doable then every other weekend. Unless we all find a middle ground to hold tournaments and play at I think that's all we can handle for now (maybe Columbia, SC). Type 1 is invading the South. Indeed. So we've got GWS, Meandeck, Arsenal, and now a GG here. Sounds like ICBM needs to send a representative to the area.

I tried tacking a Brainstorm on to my house, but Meandeck Z's House didn't sound right, so I cut them. Z's House has a better ring to it.
EDIT: Andy, there are a TON of concerts and shows here, ALL the time. I dare say way more than the Boston area. The options are pretty vast: I mean you could go see Cradle of Filth or Sesame Street this weekend. Hell, my wife is taking my kid to see the Doodlebops soon, taking her mother in law to see a Food Network show and be in the audience, and every band that I like that still tours always has a stop here. There's also a really big indy music scene here, lots of people trying to break out and doing a ton of shows. There's also a lot of festival type shows with a bunch of bands headlining.
The area I live in is right near one of the bigger concert venues, a huge mall with IMAX on the top floor, etc. Atlanta is many things, but boring isn't on that list. Hopefully you live towards the northern part of town. It'll make it way easier to get to everything that matters.
Now the bad:
Traffic here is legendary. Boston drivers are the worst, but Atlanta is the most congested main roads ever. I have flexability in my job to work whenever, so I sleep in and don't start driving to work until 9:15 AM when most of it clears up. Weekends and non-rush hours aren't too bad though.

People complain about Boston drivers. I miss them, personally. When I first moved to Indiana, I enjoyed the fact that if I get in the left-hand lane of a highway and just go, folks tend to get out of my way and allow me to pass. That's good. What isn't so good, however, is the glacial speed at which most Indiana drivers move their vehicles. Stuck behind an Indiana driver on most non-highway roads, I find myself wishing they would hurry up. It often feels as though the people sharing the road with me aren't in a particular hurry to get anywhere, and don't mind spending much longer than necessary in their cars.

Anyone ever see the opening scene to Falling Down? Where Michael Douglas was stuck in this insane traffic? That's Atlanta from 7:30 to 9 AM.

W. Peachtree street is pretty much the place to be if you're looking for good music.
Good luck in the south... I've been trying to leave for 23 years.
The traffic is god-awful. You can never predict when there will be "rush-hour" traffic, either. Everyone in the south tries, at all times, to drive 60 mph. So there's constant inertia yank. Gun it, slam on the brakes, gun it, slam on the brakes.
The other day we got held up for two hours because there was truck tire rubber on the road. We left an hour early, even for going to Atlanta, and arrived an hour late.

being from chicago, I notice this about almost all surrounding states (Wisc, Indiana, etc). I amazed that when the speed limit is 65, people are going 67 - in Chicago with a 55 mph limit, most people are going 75. I just spent a couple days in Jackson, MS for some Cisco training - same thing - speed limit 60, drivers going 60.

Chicago drivers are pretty bad, but the one thing I like about driving through is that, if traffic isnt at a complete standstill, basically everyone is going like 80. I know in Milwaukee the speed limit is only 55 on the freeway so people generally dont go past like 60-65, but on the 55 areas in Chicago everyone goes 80 anyway.
However, there's also a pretty high chance of someone cutting you off or otherwise trying very hard to kill you when you drive through Chicago, so I'm not sure the tradeoff is entirely worth it =p

Once you have to cough up $75 bucks for going 7 over the speed limit, you don't do it again. Some counties take pride in how many tickets they give out for speeding and it can be a competition between cops to see who gets to give out more money in tickets. We also don't cut someone off with like 6 inches of room while driving 70 mph. I think I'm going to get mangled in a 40 car pile up every time I go into chicago.

Plus, with fewer taxpayers, revenue from traffic tickets actually becomes pretty important. There are a few small towns in California that have major-ish roads running through them. Because it's residential areas, the speed limit drops to 25 mph, and the local police will ticket you for going 26 mph, because that's what pays their wages.
Also, the airport in Atlanta is easily the worst I have ever been to. Try not to use it ever.

It's not too bad most of the time. Travelling during the Holiday, Spring Break, or something would be really horrible as it's the biggest airport in the US, I believe. I fly out of here often, it's not always bad.

Let me start by letting Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris introduce you to the A. T. L.!!!!!!!!!! Welcome to Atlanta where the playas play And we ride on them things like every day Big beats, hit streets, see gangsta's roamin' And parties dont stop til' eight in the mornin' What part of Atlanta will you be moving to? I live in Midtown and am a regular at The Gaming Pit. (which is a couple of minutes from Zherbus' house) I am usually there on Wednesdays and Fridays playing Magic. It looks like we are starting to get a few named players down in the southeast. We could potentially run monthly Vintage tourneys here in Atlanta, and at the next tourney I will try and figure out a way to do this. PM me if you have any question about da ATL or if you want to meet up sometime. Brandon

Just flew in and out of Atlanta - it was fine (on time no rush), but I didn't get a chance to sample any amenities. No way can it be worse than Mcarren (vegas, spl?) - for a city that lives and breathes on tourists, you'd think they'd find a way to make the airport experience not being like jabbing a hot poker into your own nuts - I can't think of one time where the airport didn't have air conditioning issues, the cab line suck, flights be constantly late/delayed, etc. I used to go twice a year now I go once every 2 years and I would definitely go at least double what I do now if the travel out of that airport was a total clusterF* everytime (I've probably been there 12-15 times and it's sucked every time).
