Hey all,
I've been looking at some engineering colleges in the North East, just went to Lafayette/Lehigh this weekend. I'm unsure of what the best schools are since I havn't heard much feedback from students just faculty. If your going to anything in the North East you would recommend planning a trip for, please let me know. I've checked out Lafayette, Lehigh, UCONN, and RPI so far, I'm going to RIT/Union this weekend.
Thanks- Dave

I hope you like RIT when you visit there. It's a great engineering school, and there's a pretty good Magic community in Rochester. RIT's mens hockey team just switched to Division I in the last couple years and already they are winning their conference - games are a ton of fun to go to if you're into hockey at all.
Rochester food is awesome...Dinosaur BBQ, Nick Tahous (Garbage Plates!!!!), great Ethnic cuisine Thai, Indian, Ethiopian, Chinese, Japanese, good chicken wings (Buffalo influence)..
RIT isn't the best for singles but there are a million other schools in Rochester (Nazareth, St. John Fisher, Brockport, Geneseo, UofR) that would have what you're looking for in that department.
Feel free to PM me with any questions you have about RIT or the area if you're interested after your visit.

I hope you like dirt and bricks. RIT has tons of both. Honestly, I was really into RIT until I visited it, and then I was savagely dissapointed by the campus. And the extra year they require you to take as an engineering student. On the other hand, they have a lot of Magic players, but that shouldn't be any kind of incentive to choose a school by. The three best Engineering schools in NYS are probably RPI, RIT, and Clarkson; Syracuse is pretty good too. Edit - Of course RIT is winning their division. They're in the AHA! We saw how they played against ECAC teams this weekend....

Case Western Reserve's Engineering schools are all outstanding, but living on the East Side of Cleveland might not be your cup of tea.

What kind of engineering do you plan on studying? That may make a difference in what schools are the best.

Depends on discipline. Cornell is #1 in engineering physics, but MIT is still #1 for overall engineering. It's also #1 in mechanical specifically (and #1 in the northeast for civil; you have to go out west to get better). If you can get into Cornell, you'd be better off at MIT as far as program strength. That said, if campus concerns you, MIT's is hideous. Just take the T two stops up to Harvard to do all of your studying. MIT undergrads are also often smug and/or hyper-competitive in my experience. It's a highly unusual school in many ways, and one you should visit first, being sure to speak with as many current students (not your tour guide) as possible while you're there. Cooper Union is also a really excellent school (I just checked US News, and it's #2 nationally for mechanical engineering among schools not offering a doctorate), and it's free. It also has Ivy League-style acceptance rates, though.

I don't know about USN&WR rankings (which I don't put much stock in, anyway), but Olin College in Needham, Massachusetts recently opened an engineering program and from what I hear, it's quite good.

This may sound crazy to some people, but UMass Lowell has the #2 plastics engineering program in the country. It also has in the top 20 for computer science. It's physics program is good, but there are probably better schools. I can't speak to civil or mechanical engineering though.

And the extra year they require you to take as an engineering student.
This isn't quite the drawback that it seems. The mandatory coops are helpful in building a resume that has actual work on it, offsetting tuition costs (especially if you get one somewhere that pays well) and securing full time work after graduation. If you do well on a coop there is a good chance the company will offer you a full time job as they have already invested 3-6 months of time and money in you. This makes you attractive vs a fresh candidate. That said it's definitely not for everyone. I'm pretty sure everyone I graduated high school with is either working by now or in grad school. Edit: Everytime I drive to Rochester and see signs for RPI I think "Man, if I was going to RPI I wouldn't have another 3-4 hours ahead of me..."

Don't go to RPI. I went there, it's a shit hole. Your just a number there to give them money. Also no girls, and no magic unless your willing to travel a bit.

Go somewhere that isn't pure engineering. Trust me, you want to branch out. Good well-rounded program, and it changes the requirements (some pure engineering schools require more chemistry and bio and things). Plus, better girls.

Ya, but you get stuck taking crap like English and Religion and History instead of Math and Science courses.
That being said, I would also suggest attending a more broad school, I know that it has been quite nice to know people who weren't engineers here (Univ. of Dayton). I mean, I am an engineering student (for 3 more weeks) and I do enjoy hanging out with other engineers, but a little variety is a good thing. I think it was definitely worth the hassle of having to take history and religion classes that I had no interest in to get to be exposed to a much broader range of people and experiences.
I haven't attended a tech-only school, but based on my experience at a full-size University, particularly one with a relatively strong CPE program, I would highly recommend attending somewhere that you can choose something else if you realize engineering isn't for you.

Indeed Biomedical Engineering is allright. The program here (Wash U in St. Louis) is damn near 50/50. You won't have nearly that much luck in ME, though.
