I'm surprised to see that nobody is talking about the SCG Chicago event.
Just got of the phone with Mark Trogdon and he said that there were 126 players. They are currently in their after round 2 lunch break.
Metagame looks like normal. Flash, GAT, goblins, shops, and other decks containing dark confidants and tarmogoyfs.
I here that Jerry Yang, Juan Rodriguez, Jimmy McCarthy, are 2-0, Mark is 1-1, Nat Moes and Dave Daugherty are 0-2, and Menendian is 1-0-1, drawing with Mastriano in round one.
Sounds real interesting. Anyone else hear anything that is happening?

Some updates:
DeMars is 3-0 with Control Slaver. 13Nova is 2-1.
Steve is 1-0-2.
Jesus is 1-2. He lost to Affinity like Josh described in his last article and to Goblins.

The next round was posted so I didn't get to hear much else...

Just got off the phone with Jerry Yang.
Top 8 looks like:
Jerry Yang - Mono-Red Workshop Aggro Jimmy McCarthy - GAT 5 ICBMers with their new deck - Dark Confidant, Stifle, Dreadnaught, Tarmogoyf.dec and 1 GWSer with ?
Interesting results...
They are deck checking right now and the top 8 will start soon.

The GWS'er might be Jameson Bryant - playing a similar version of the RG deck he came in 10th at SCG Indy. He was 5-0-1 going into the last round and got paired down against the deez noughts w/ Gofy deck. Even if he lost he should have good tiebreakers.
In general, there was 126 people, so there will probably be 2-4 people at 5-1-1 who don't make top 8.

Wow, that's an awful number of people to have (for the players). Makes it quite hard to get in...

Jamison is definitely an ICBM'er last time I checked. Speaking of ICBM...good job team! Rah rah rah :p The goyf deeznoughts deck is pretty good, not surprised a couple broke though. I'm curious to see what ends up winning. I wouldn't mind seeing GR take it home. In any event, It's good to see decks other than GAT in top 8. I expect a diverse day 2 as well...if only because it appears people are becoming sick of playing GAT. - Dave

I have the top 8 decklists, but I don't think I can post until SCG has them up, but, let's just say that there were some interesting card choices, and TK's stiflenaught deck is REALLY good.

Some years ago the SCG tournaments had hilarious trash-talking in the previous weeks, new tech emerging, and excellent coverage, and a lot of reports with pictures and decklists, which resulted in people attracted and lured by Vintage.
Things have changed for the worst.

5 ICBMers with their new deck - Dark Confidant, Stifle, Dreadnaught, Tarmogoyf.dec It doesn't sound new cause goyf has been played in the deck for a while. But maybe I'd better wait for a list.

I'm sure SCG won't care, as the lists will help further Vintage discussion...which is the primary goal of this forum I say post them!

Jamison won with R/G beats.
This is truly great. There's been so much publicity lately of general Vintage stupidness: Starcity Indy being an almost all Gush Top 8, then the Magic Invitational being won with broken Flash shenanigans based on the die roll... etc. Then someone goes and wins Starcitygames Chicago with RG BEATS out of a diverse and high level top 8. Congratulations, Jamison, on breaking the format.

Everyone
I just want to say that I played my first game of magic in 1994, and this was my first tournament ever. I have been a casual player for 13 years now, and yesterday's tournament was the most fun playing magic that I've had in a decade. I met so many people that until now I have only read about, and I would just like to say that they are all much cooler in person. The people in this format are truly amazing people. Lastly, I would like to say that the metagame was very diverse yesterday. I went 2-3 drop (not unexpected for my first tournament), and I played against Empty Gifts, MUD with Staff of domination, tidespout tyrant oath, stax (with stax), and UR slaver played by nova13. As I walked around I saw everydeck imaginable from goblins, bonmberman, standstill, suiblack, ichorid, etc. Winning with RG beats must have truly been a difficult challenge, and says a lot about jameson. Thanks everyone for making this game so much fun.
Marc PS. Looking forward to deck lists.

I was there for day 1. The metagame was extremely diverse. Out of the 97 decks we were able to scout, there were 9-12 of Stax, Shop aggro, GAT, Naughts, combo, drain control, Oath and goblins. It was incredibly diverse. Everything was played in about equal numbers.
Jamison seriously kicked ass. It was ridiculous. R/G Beatz with 4 Tin Street Hooligans was amazing for the weekend.
Goyf is now a powerhouse in Vintage just like every other format. I played Ravager and lost my 2 matches to the goyf decks in 3 games each. Both were incredibly close and came down to the wire. It was unfortuante that I went 0-7 in coinflips for the day too. Creature evasion is amazing right now because the ground is so clogged up. On the same note, Moat is also amazing.
126 day 1 91 day 2.
