A couple of considerations , hoping not to take another verbal warning.

1) italians are clearly the best (4 italians in top8).
The winner won every single game, with the best deck for the field (gush infested)

2) we just show to the world that dark confidant + mono gift (name of the deck is TDS the dark scroll) is not only viable but is a tier1 and in US is it not considered.

3) oath + 2 tyrant is clearly the best oath deck now, other builds are suboptimal

4) TPS Ubr is still there and competitive, with or without dark confidant. That is another deck US doesn't consider, they think only long can compete.

The winner lost to Santiago Hoyas in the swiss rounds (round 2 I believe).

I prefer do not talk about the ill-manner of some italian players (not the champion sure, he was very polite).

There are 2 Oath builds in top16 and only one have Tyrants, the other only has Platinum Angel, and there are a lot of Tyrant Oaths than Platinum Oath in the tourney. Platinum Oath is very good also against the field.

Thanks... That's amazing that Eric was the only American (from New England too) and got second place... Hilarious... Oh but the Italians are the best...

Hi DuKeLiO,

I'm not sure on what you mean ill-manner, maybe you mean some regarding cheating or just on behaviour?

I hope you refer only about laughs ank sketches during the top 8/16 play..

Thanks for clarify,

2º Eric Dupuis - GAT
"Ron Paul Revolution"

4 Ponder

Quote

2) WHERE  IS YOUR FOURTH PONDER?  Seriously.   It's, probably, the very best turn one play in gat using unrestricted cards.   It's better than Scroll cause of the predominance of Duress and its better than turn one Brainstorm most of the time.
Ponder is an absolute house.  It is better than brainstorm turn 1.  That said, I just feel the draw engine has worked fantastic so far.  The deck doesn't really need any more cantrips.  It is certainly not better than Merchant Scroll.  Scroll gives you a draw engine that is basically a free Yawgmoth's Bargain that sets up Yawgmoth's Will while it thins your deck.  Ponder gets you online, and digs.  Once you're online, Ponder starts to lose it's value.

In time, I think you will come to see that running less than 4 Ponder is an obvious error.

*AH-HEM*

You have some explaining to do, me thinks.

First off, thanks to Wette for putting up lists. We Americans really do read/consider them.

2) we just show to the world that dark confidant + mono gift (name of the deck is TDS the dark scroll) is not only viable but is a tier1 and in US is it not considered.

4) TPS Ubr is still there and competitive, with or without dark confidant. That is another deck US doesn't consider, they think only long can compete.

America is a big place, but Americans do study European lists.  We just assume many of these meta's are Sanctioned (no proxy) and not as entirely relevent as a 10 proxy meta.  (But I assure you that we are jealous of your 140+ turnouts. 90+, 50+ and 40+ are the biggest tournies I've been to.)

Or NorCal meta (Northern California) has been Bob-happy and Tendrils happy for years.

There is no need for anyone to quarrel and hail their nation as the best one, so I hope such meaningless discussions will just be dropped dead.

On the other hand it would be quite interesting to discuss why certain decks just aren't considerede on the other side of the world, and I mean decks such as TDS, the darkconfidant-scroll combo-control in US as well as most of the American Grow/Gush variants on this other side of the sea. Certainly, the proxy issue puts a certain constraint on which decks are viable/played and which not. Decks like Tyrant gain a lot from an aggro-control proxyless meta where creatures are a lot, but even competitive dryads/tarmo-based decks wouldn't be too happy to see an oath hitting the table.

Other decks, instead, like the TDS mentioned above, should shine even more in a meta where hate decks aren't so widespread. Which are the reasons for this differences? Just the fact that both sides of the ocean do not look at each other? I don't think so. Lists are generally known, just usually considered out of "this side's meta"; I still think that often this is just laziness on trying new things, and even sad "we-are-good-they-are-not" thoughts, and I'm blaming european too about this, beware! ..but I could even be wrong. Certainly, quarreling about everyone's coolness doesn't help sharing ideas.

@ILBERNA

I mostly refer about laughs and crys in the top8/16 mostly in the italian vs. non-italian duels, and for example the italian who started to cry when he won his top16 match. I believe we were always very polite when we went to Italy to play Vintage (I am refering to my playgroup, not every spanish player beacuse I don't know every spanish player who went to Italy to play Vintage). I have gone to Nightmare tournament and Ovinoggeddon in 2006 and Ovinoggeddon 2 this year. Also I am very happy of mostly of you came here to Spain to play in our tourney, and I am also very happy for how you italians treat me when I went to italian tourneys, I only wanted to make notice of these Ill-mannered players (not the mostly, sure).

Hi, I understand what you mean, now it's clear..
and also I understand who you refer to..
is a young guy that is playing from less then 1 year and he was "so fk happy to have no control of his actions"... Smile

The important thing, anyhow, is that you don't refer to any cheat or similar, because only this should be bad...

maybe we also met (not in play) at nightmare and/or Ovinogeddon2

hope to meet you again Wink

I am one of the italian that went in Valencia and i can explain the reason of our comportament during top 8/16.
It was vary sad had 4 italian in top 16 and can't see the match i am the organizator of Ovinogeddon 2 and i think there is no reason to prohibithed to see the macht, in fact the semi final and final are open.
So we explain in bad manner our frustrations,.

I dind't say nothing about the decklist or also, anyone is free to think that some deck is bettr that another else.

I play in spain about my next big tournament in september 2008 were all are invited this is well be the best Vintage tournament in the World and it's called EurOvino3.

The target is 400 players Eric says to me that he will came as the shop OverTheEdgeGames i'll hope to see many americans spanish french for play in a better atmosphere and why not to see wich player and wich deck is the best.

In the next months it's ready the web site of this event.

So see you soon

Bye

Hi, that's only one of the reasons you should take a plane and come to Italy for a big tournament (15/16th march in Florence or later for EurOvino 3).
Wil be a pleasure for you and for us to have some people representing US meta in big italian tournaments... maybe also Vintage World Champion 2007 (I hope you read this Stephen..) will appreciate to play against the best Italian players and trade with us LIVE impressions and opinions on the meta differences...

I won't stress you anymore but I hope to see some of you on our next big events.

Bye all, Davide

hi guys, this is my first post here on the mana drain!
i am an italian player, unfortunately i wasn't at Valencia. it was a pity, as everyone here is talking about that like something very special, not only the tournament but also city and spanish people.

talking about the differences in our metagame compared with spain or usa, it seems quite clear that the main fact is to have or not to have proxies.
in italy, before starting a tournament, you have to think if your deck can beat not only workshops decks, control and combo, but also aggro and aggro control decks, in different shapes. this is obviously due to the lack of proxies, and surely alterates the metagame.

the result is that some deck in italy is just viable and in usa it is a tier1 and vice versa.
also, in our country people LOVE some card, eg mana drain, which is heavily played in md.gift like builds with dark confidant, and that makes it a tier1 here; while in other countries they just think "hey, this deck is insane! let's dump the old one and try something new!". we are more conservative and we look with suspect at the new builds, also looking at the "aesthetical" side of the game.

the typical italian player wants to play control, or, if he plays combo, he will probably choose storm combo or something like that, nearly no one thinks at combo like "turn one kill" decks.

so...no-one plays flash, while everybody fear it and add more sideboard cards against it
same for ichorid, even if somebody play that
we have many drain or control decks
some gat, many workshop decks
and of course aggro and aggro control, in a remarkable quantity.
storm combo as well

this ends my little detour on the italian metagame, hoping not to have bored you ^^'

btw, i really like Eric's list, playing with 8 pitch seems very funny!

i beg your pardon for any english mistake i've done!
bye

America is a big place, but Americans do study European lists.  We just assume many of these meta's are Sanctioned (no proxy) and not as entirely relevent as a 10 proxy meta.  (But I assure you that we are jealous of your 140+ turnouts. 90+, 50+ and 40+ are the biggest tournies I've been to.)

Could you make a post about this in the announcement forum so that we can see what the prices will be, where it will be, how to get there etc.

Thanks
