Am I the only one thoroughly confused by that entire report? There's a bunch of mistakes in the decklists at the very least, unless you can now run 11 Jotun Grunts. The results are just as confusing. TMWA, Flash, ICBM Oath, and Doomsday as the T4? Elemental something in the T8? No idea why Rector Tendrils was called 'Gush Tinker'.

First of all, I'm sory for those mistakes. When you tap 10 decklist, it can happen that you hit twice the 1 whitout noticing it... I copied the wrong decklist for Philippe Gareau (I Copied the decklist of Jean-Philippe Gagné). My mistake, sorry. Gareau played Gush Tinker. TMWA
Lany don't like calling his deck TMWA, and I understand it. Look at Gush Tinker and GAT. Now look at TMWA and "Le briseur de rêves". Which of them have the more cards in common!? It's not because a deck is R-B-W aggro/disruption that it's automacly TMWA in my opinion, those are two distinc decks. The results are just as confusing. TMWA, Flash, ICBM Oath, and Doomsday as the T4? Elemental something in the T8?
I think people should be a little more open-minded. There is a lot of viable type1 decks right now. People laugth at us when we first played Bomberman in the USA... They did not when we brought back power from SCG P9 tourney with it.

Here is what I played : Deck : Landstill Maindeck (60) 1x Black Lotus* 1x Mox Saphire* 2x Crucible of World 4x Mishra’s Factory 2x Faerie Conclave 4x Wasteland 1x Strip Mine 4x Volcanic Island 2x Island 3x Polluted Delta 2x Flooded Strand 1x Library of Alexandria 4x Standstill 1x Ancestral Recall* 1x Time Walk* 3x Fire/Ice 3x Echoing Truth 4x Mana Drain 3x Spell Snare 4x Force of Will 1xTrickbind 4x Stifle 3x Misdirection* 1x Red Elemantal Blast 1x Pyroblast Sideboard (15) 4x Chalice of the Void 4x Leyline of the Void 2x Rack and Ruin 2x Shattering Spree 2x Pyroclasm 1x Pithing Needle If you have any comment to improve it or want to discuss about it, just go ahead. I finished 2win, 2lost, 1draw and I lost round 5 to briseur de reve, which stole my T8 I made a critical mistake when I was playing agaisnt GAT and he casted Dominate on my Mishra's Factory and Fire//Ice on it, I Force of Willed the Dominate, and I had no Force of Will to deny his Yawgmoth's Will so I lost Game 1 - Bomberman, Played by a Teammate = Draw Game 2 - ICBM Oath = Win Game 3 - GAT = Lost (Mistakes...) Game 4 - Bomberman = Win Game 5 - Briseur de rêve = Lost ( Game 1 = Magus of the Moon beat me for 9 turn without me getting an answer, Game 2 = Lotus cast thoughseize and Chains of Mephistopheles that stop me)

Just a small comment since my deck name is in French, I originally came up with the name "Dreambreaker" in English, which I then translated into "Briseur de reves", so if the deck gains popularity like Bomberman did, feel free to call it by it's English name, "Dreambreaker". Also, VF Black Lotus for sale!

I know some people will say that the "Le 5e Élément" is a pile of crap, that's a type2 deck with Moxen and Recall/Walk... Before critizing the deck, please try it out against the decks played now. That's clearly a viable type1 deck, probably not tier1, but still...
There are several things to consider when analysing a comment like that. First the quality of the players at the tournaments. Second the quality of the decks at the tournament. Lastly the number of players who attended the tournaments. Honestly I can't see any possible way that this deck could be good in a healthy metagame against competent players playing established archetypes. Also you'd probably have to pay my entry fee for me to play that in a type 2 tournament.

That's not the first time this sort of criticism has been used to discredit an archetype, nor will it be the last. Have you tested it? Probably not right? Wouldn't it be fair to say that your "honest" opinion about the deck has little basis at all? If decks were always evaluated on how they look on the surface, we'd have a history of this format minus about 5 archetypes. Sometimes terrible looking decks turn out to be decent within a specific metagame. If you don't like it, that's fine, but I don't think you're in a position to discredit its viability without at least something resembling a valid argument.

Totally agree with Rich on this one, as about everyone that did not play against the deck even in our local metagame bashed it on sight. However, remember that this was an Invitationnal Championship, none on the participants were there by mistake and all of them won their invitation by winning or performing well at a number of tournaments. These were experienced players playing with good decks to win a Lotus. Even though that deck will very likely never be tier 1, I assure you it has a very decent matchup against a number of decks on the field (Stax, Fish and most control decks). But heh, since when are people open-minded here, way easier to flame on sight.

First the quality of the players at the tournaments Like Wagner pointed out, it was an invitation only championship. I can tell you that there were a lot of very competent players at that tournament! It seems to a lot of people that only SCG P9 and Waterbury touneys has competent players, has valid "tournament results" and "healthy metagame". That's kind of "Funny"... Anyway... Very few of us travel sometimes to USA to play in P9 tournaments (Due to the cost / the amount of time it takes to go there). And there was at least 7 players invited in the CVQ2007 Final that made at least a top8 in a Big type1 tournament in the USA: Ugo Rivard (2 times SCGP9 Rochester winner and Top8 at another SCGP9) Lany Chabot-Laroche (a total of something like 3-4 top8 in SCGP9 tournament / Bladswinville P9 tournament) Ian Sauvé (Top4 at a SCG P9 Rochester) Jean-Philippe Leconte (Top8 at Waterbury) Martin Bonneville (Top8 at a SCG P9 Rochester) Simon Guérette (Top8 at a Waterbury) Simon MacRae (Top8 at a SCG P9 Rochester) There are other players that never attended a Big tournament in the USA and would be able to make a top8 apparence there... Anyway, there are very competent players in the province of Québec and the best players was in that championship. In my opinion, the CVQ championship is a valid result that shouldn't be rejected as easily like this! Lastly the number of players who attended the tournaments. Honestly I can't see any possible way that this deck could be good in a healthy metagame against competent players playing established archetypes. I don't know what a "healthy metagame" is for you, but anyway... My playtest show me that Le 5e Élément don't have a bad matchup against GAT and Stax at all... I would say that the deck has a slightly good or good matchup against those (depending of the opponent's build and sideboard). If the field is full of Stax and GAT, I can't see why this deck couldn't be good... I only played 40 games agaisnt stax and 40 games against GAT (20 before and 20 after sideboard). Maybe you have a more "scientific" playtest with your team that show the oposite. If so, feel free to post it, I'm really interested to see it! Also you'd probably have to pay my entry fee for me to play that in a type 2 tournament. I don't know type2 at all... I have friends that do and they told me that Elemental isn't good in type2... But you know what?? What is good in type2 isn't necesserly good in type1 and what is good in type1 is not necessairly good in type2. Take Ignot Chewer for exemple. It was a very good card for me in the champ, especially against Stax!! But I really doubt he's that good in type2... Type1 and type2 are really different!

I would love to hear an explanation on the roles and matchups the elemental deck has. It looks like a pile. I don't have a problem with that. I build decks that look like piles all the time that win because it attacks an odd weakness or it does it differently (hell, I played Brass Gnat at SCG). I hope someone familiar with the deck can write up something at least semi-detailed about the deck.
edit: Where are the black tutors? They seem superior to the Harbinger.

edit: Where are the black tutors? They seem superior to the Harbinger. Well, I don't think they are... First, because you play with Thorn which makes them less good, but mainly because you play with Nova Chaser which is your main win condition. The most "Classic" win is something like: 1st turn: Harbrigner (For Incandescent Soulstoke or Nova Chaser, the one you don't have). 2nd Turn: Incandescent Soulstoke (Swing with Harbrigner for 2). 3rd turn: put Nova Chaser into play championning the Harbrigner and swing for 13. At end of Turn, the Nova Chaser is sacrified, so the Harbrigner is put back into play. You search for another Elemental, lets say... Another Nova Chaser! 4th Turn: put Nova Chaser into play and Swing for 13 again an win! Yeah, you will say: 4th turn kill is not good in type1... I said it's the "most classic" win, that's not the best one at all! The deck has a lot of disruption (Duress-Thoughtseize-Thorn), it's good to play them. A 1st turn Thorn (With land+Mox or Ancient Tomb) is particullary good, since you play almost nothing except creatures. If you follow the Next turn with a Incandescent Soulstoke or a Smokebraider you are in a good shape normally! Note that if you have a Soulstoke into play, all your Elemental can come into play safely at instant speed! Oh... And he gives +1/+1 to all other Elemental too, which isn't bad at all... The deck draw cards with Mulldrifter, which can be evoked, cast or put into play with Soulstoke (like any other creatures). Shirekmaw is really good to kill creatures, especially if you can cast him (So He stay on the table!). Smokebraider helps you to cast all creatures you have (Or to activate the Soulstoke!!). Ingot Chewer is obviously good against any artifact and shine against Stax! Deepfire Elemental is somewhat random good... I have seen a Deepfire Elemental eating 2 Juggernaud in the same game! You have tons of Mana in this deck, so it's good to have a Deepfire Elemental. (Oh, and he's good against Mishra's Factory too!!) Aethersnipe is there to bounce anything you don't want to see into play. such as PLatinum angel or Darksteel Colossus. Well... That's pretty much the basis of the deck. There's a lot of little trick you can do (Such as evoking the Mulldrifter and when the trigger of sacrificing it you put Nova Chaser into plya with the Soulstoke championning the Mulldrifter. So, you draw 2 cards, swing for 13 and then, draw 2 more and have a 2/2 Flyer for only and 2 cards in hand? not bad!!!). Anyway, what makes the deck good is the good disruption you have and the really good synergy the deck has and all the acceleration you have to play out those "big Elemental" (5 Mox, Crypt, Sol Ring, Lotus, 4 Smokebraider, 4 Soulstoke, 3 Ancient Tomb)

Initial testing shows the deck is very very dependent on soulstroke. Meddling Mage or Pithing Needle means the deck is a bunch guys that cost about 2 or 3 mana more than they should. At the very least is there a reason to not play Demonic Tutor? The deck is pretty fun though

The deck is pretty fun though Well, except for the Nova Chaser which has a fair cost for I think (10/2 Trample!!). If Meddling or Needle is such a problem, side-in some Shirekmaw and/or Ignot Chewer to deals with them! And by t he way, maybe they cost about 2-3 more mana than they should, but if you have smokebraider out there, he gives you that 2 more manas! And yes, this is a pretty fun deck!

But if you can't find soul, then all of your guys just say "give target opponent a buttload of mana during their next main phase" or "these guys are even more uncastable underneath your opponent's tangle wires or sphere of resistances." At least, that's what I'm finding so far.

Not always... You have disruption for Drain decks. Stax play lots of 3+ casting cost card and it don't make the deck unplayable! Against Stax, you obviously want to drop into play a Soulstoke or Smokebraider (which is really good against stax too!!) as soon as possible to "counter" the Tangle Wire/Sphere. But you can also evoke the Ignot Chewer to kill an artifact for the low cost of (Or with Sphere into play). If you can hardcast the Chewer that's pretty good, but evoking it it's fine!

Stax play lots of 3+ casting cost card and it don't make the deck unplayable! Stax also plays Workshop, which makes 3cc into 1cc. I can see Braider being awesome against Stax. Just looks like it will be a really rough game 1 since you only have 1 Ingot Chewer. I just figured out what this deck reminds me of--7/10. Starts off slow with some disruption. But if your opponent doesn't go nuts on you before turn 4, you are probably going to win just by playing BIG DUDES. And anyone who knows me knows that BIG DUDES are my solution to every problem.

Nice top 8! Cheers to Canada! I like the elemental deck. While it may not be the best deck in the format and could be enhanced here and there I really love to see new deck ideas. Way more interesting than GAT list 276 with 3 Ponder instead of 4... Keep it coming! Besides that some lists miss cards: list 1 misses 5 cards list 2 misses 5 cards list 3 misses 4 cards and one sideboard card list 6 has 63 cards? list 7 misses 2 cards Check http://www.morphling.de/top8decks.php?id=741

This deck seems to have finished very high ranked after the swiss (First i even guess) so it seems solid, especilly in an invitationnal oturnament (We got the same in France, the level is very high, as only the 30-32 best players performing during the previous year qualified) so I really hope that one day, the american vintage players will stop the bababa piece of crap thing. As an old Designer of RW Standart aggro deck ported to Type one, with alot of succes against etablished archetypes (Gifts and stax and WGD, back in 2004-2005) i wish you could keep on thinking like that, but i would prefer people to try to innovate. That said, I'm still fascinated by this kind of performance, so Cheers to Canadian Vintage players and Innovators This deck seems really a blast to play

List 1 lists 2 Demonic Tutor. One should be a Vampiric one I suppose... Not quite, Vampiric is rarely good in that deck. The card is Demonic indeed, but it's Demonic Consultation.

Thanks for posting these results! I'm always happy to see such interesting top 8's: WRB placing 1st in the main event and Tribal Elementals top 8'ing makes me very happy! Please, keep up the good work with such innovations.

As a Canadian:
I find it very interesting to read on the results of my national metagame. The last tournament I played, I faced an Uba Stax player who quoted "as I whipped his ass With U/W/B Fish (pre Planar) "I hate the local Meta game" I asked why and he responded with "it's not like what I have researched and looked into" I responded with the fact that if you are going to play in Canada, realize you are NOT in the states. it's something I've had to learn the hard way. I look at States based decks and established archtypes from the states and realize only a few will actuall be playing these decks here in canada. For example, I've played against far more Bomberman here than Grim Long. i've played against storm decks for sure, but not as much as Fish based or "unique" decks. Canada has it's own breed that seems to stem more from fun or custom building than netdecking and changing a few cards.
I know that many innovators in the States make great changes and creations that are amazing to look at, sleeve up and test. But when you are in Canada, realize that you never really know what you are up against in a given tournament. No one here is interested in netdecking a winning list and running it for the most part. I think the next big thing to make it across Canada will be a slew of Super Long and Tropical Storm players due to it's low Proxy count. I'm sure I could be wrong, but it's my 2 cents. As a last thought, as a Canadian, I meta for my local and keep a seperate SB/MD list for the US, if you are going to play nationaly, metagaming accordingly is huge. You wouldn't meta for a States game allowing 5-10 proxies the same way you would meta/choose a deck for a European no proxy allowed tourny would you?
cheers from Ontario, Canada Mike

Hello.
My count on the SX decklist from the side event puts it at 55 main deck cards. I am guessing 4 Dark Rituals belong in there. Any idea what else is missing?

But heh, since when are people open-minded here, way easier to flame on sight.
What were you expecting when you post decklist and you've got this deck that looks like a pile of garbage? You've got to give some sort of explanation otherwise yeah it's going to get attacked. You've never had a friend go up to you and say "I want to build a deck around X + Y" and all you can think is that sounds terrible? Imagine a friend telling you "I want to build a type 1 Kithin deck with a Harbinger toolbox, I think it could be really good! Seriously. And all of the cards outside of Power and Ancient Tombs are standard legal." At first you're going to wince at the thought, but after hearing some explanation you'll just say sure, whatever, give it a try or that's some nice synergy, but this is type 1. Same thing applies here. I'm not totally surprised the deck made t8 (I'm sure being rogue helped though). Elementals don't really work in other formats because their big mana costs, but in type 1 with moxen you can get some ridiculous mana when you combine Smokebraider and Moxen. My initial thought would be the Harbinger toolbox might be a little overdone and the deck could benefit from the addition or Demonic and Vamp since they can find solutions and Walk/Ancestral. Deepfire Elemental would fall into this category. Theoretically, I just don't see the point where you'd need to tutor this guy up over Shriekmaw, especially since the deck will hold down the board in combat better than almost any other t1 deck. Maybe, if your opponent has double Goblin Welder, but at that point you've got to wonder how you're going to come up with 1 + 6 + 3 + 3 mana to tutor this guy up and start using him.

What were you expecting when you post decklist and you've got this deck that looks like a pile of garbage? You've got to give some sort of explanation otherwise yeah it's going to get attacked. If someone only post a decklist like this one in, let's say, the Vintage Open Forum whitout explanation, I can understand that it's going to get attacked. Here it's a tournament result, there isn't explanation on each decklists in a tournament result post. Asking for explanation about the deck like MoxLotus did is fine! Saying on the spot that this deck can't win against good decks played by component players is bad and really narrow-minded. It's fine to be surprised by a result like this (I was really surprised to see a R-G Beat deck winning a SCG P9), but if this deck made top8 in an invitational championship that says by itself that this deck should be not as bad as it looks. Anyway... As for Deepfire Elemental, he's good against Moxen and Mishra's Factory too. If put into play with Soulstoke, you can swing for 5 and eat 2 Moxen for . Not bad, especialy when you have Thorn into play. The first Elemental that should go out in my opinion is Horde of Notion. He's really hard to cast (You need a smokebraider!) and while he's really good when you have it out it's not worth it. I don't think I will play the Horde again. As for black Tutors, it should be tested, but I don't like Vampiric/I. Seal... You loose already too much life by your own (Fetchs, Ancient Tomb, Thoughtseize, Mana Crypt). The best tutor for this deck should be, in my opinion, Demonic Consultation. You play lots of 4 off, it put the card directly into your hand for only . Sure you can't search for recall or Walk unless really necessary, but you can still search for Duress/Thorn/Soulstoke/Smokebraider/Nova Chaser or even harbrigner if you are looking for a 1 of Elemental. I will test Consultation for sure.
