Anyone know any decent video editing software that is free/trial that is really nice?

Somebody tell Chapin how counterbalance works?

 How in-depth do you need this software to be?  (Simple cuts, basic transitions, chroma-keying, cg, color correction, multi-camera, etc?)  Is this for a particular project or more of a "I want to learn" situation?

Not hardcore advanced, something around an equal level of adobe premiere?

Windows Movie Maker is nice and simple. It only produces WMV videos though. Maybe also VideoThang, though that creates problems for me when I try playing videos in Windows Media Player.

Adobe Premiere Elements has a free trial offer, although I'm not sure what limitations the "trial" imposes.  Unlike many consumer based programs, it can handle unlimited video/audio tracks and real-time video rendering.  The full version is available for about 100$.   

Pinnacle Video Spin is free, but is also known for being buggy/crashing

Almost all non-linear editing systems use the same concepts and workflow...it's just a question of figuring out where the buttons are as you move from system to system.  Check here:

...for file format compatibility if you already have imported footage.
