Since I'm obviously new to this forum, I'll start by introducing myself Smile

My name is Jay, I'm 19 and from New Hampshire.  I'd like to consider myself a pretty competitive Magic player.  I regularly attend PTQs and FNMs and just have a genuine love of the game.  I starting playing during Onslaught/Mirrodin and have played consistently since.  I look forward to getting to know this community more Smile

I've never really gotten into the eternal formats.  I've always just been your typical drafter/standard player, with a dabble of Extended mixed in.  This being said, I'm obviously really interested in getting into Vintage.  There is a place I found that does weekly Vintage tournies, with I think 15 proxies.  And what's really cool is that they have an artist there who you can pay to draw art on blank cards to use as your proxies.  Anyway, I know a little of the basics of the format, such as a few of the higher tier decks, some popular card interactions, etc, but that's really the extent of it.  The more I read about it the more interested I get.  Just seems like a really fun, skill-intensive, and interesting format.  There are a couple problems, however.  My collection of cards consists almost entirely of Onslaught onward.  Money isn't really a HUGE issue for me (obviously I'm not looking to buy power or anything), but I'm not afraid of spending a little money to have some fun.

My main questions were; What are some examples of decks that are relatively easy for inexperienced Vintage players to handle?  Do they even exist?  When looking to purchase some Vintage cards, what are some of the staples that all Vintages players should have?  How expensive or inexpensive can it actually be to make a 15 proxy Vintage deck that is competitive?

So yeah, any help for this Vintage newb to get off his feet would be spectacular.  Thanks again for your time.

Hey Jay,

Glad to see you are stepping into the vintage scene.
Easiest deck for a new vintage player is probably Oath in my opinion.  It's as straight forward as it gets with a build with Akroma, Razia, and DSC.  From there you can branch out into Tidespout Tyrant and other variants, and it is rather easy to assemble.  Try TPS or pitchlong at least once to get a feel of how Vintage uses the storm mechanic, and how to beat it.  GAT is fun and easy as well.  The question I think is what style deck suits you.  There are also old school decks that are an all around hoot to play regardless of the outcome.
Some staples that you need: (found in most decks)
Brainstorm
Fetches
Duals
Yawg. Will
Tinker
Mana Crypt
Mana Vault
Gaea's Blessing
Crop Rotation
Force of Will  (worth the $80-100 for a playset)
Stifle
Tendril's of Agony
Gush
Merchant Scroll
Wasteland
Strip Mine
Mishra's Factory or Mutavault
Tolarian Academy
and a ton of others
I'm sure there is an article out there with all the staples.

Good Luck

A few staple cards in Vintage (Brainstorm and Ponder) as well as 3 somewhat less central cards (Merchant Scroll, Gush, Flash) just got restricted...so keep that in mind.

Where abouts in NH?

If anywhere near Salem, all you need to do is pop in for an FNM at Myriad, and the Myriad crew will fill you in on everything you need to know on getting started as well as be more than likely to give you a game anytime they are able. Oli, Craig, Dan, and myself(Kyle, although since I moved to Moultonborough, Salem is a bit of a drive for me now.) are all tournament regulars with lots of experience in the format.

On the other hand, if you live in the lakes region or the southern end of the MW valley, hit me up! I'm always up for some card gaming of some kind.

Good state to live in if you want in on some action. Very Happy
