Holy fuck. That's uh... all I really have to contribute. Looks like the format is gonna be Shops and Ichorid... maybe Drain decks can make a comeback (without BS)? Possibly a build of Grim Long can work, with Infernal Contracts, etc. to make up for the loss of BS.

But damn...

I almost fell out of my chair when I saw Ponder on the list as well as Brainstorm. The other three (Merchant Scroll, Flash, Gush) are understandable, but Ponder and Brainstorm? The format just got a lot more dependent on the opening hand, or so it would seem. Guess I'm back to playing shops.

Side note: What's up with no un-restrictions? At least take Dream Halls off the list. Or give us FoF after you gut the format.

Brainstorm? A staple of the format for umm what, like since the incepton of type one magic? Was wizards thinking that vintage was too fast? I mean, isnt that the point of the format? to be quick? Whats next Restriced FoW so the format slows dowwn a little. O well, back to 9sphere... Wizards really messed up on this bannings. When is the next B/r list going to come out? anyone know?

Next B/R is in 3 months, so September 1st. But it will likely be until next year before any of this is possibly reversed.

wow. didn't see the cross-hairs on ponder, but the others had it coming. did anyone at wotc even test 4x gush before unrestricting it to begin with? seems like dredge is the new hottness...the vintage champs this year is gonna be interesting for sure, as people will have to actually innovate. way to turn the type 1 scene upside down.

Well there will certainly be some interesting decks coming out now.  Did anyone read any of the other stuff on the site?  Magic is changing quite a bit.  They are introducing a new rarity, mythic, that sounds like it will be similar to the epic cards in WoW.  They are shrinking the set sizes as well.

In a nutshell. Ponder? Really? I can see the argument for Brainstorm, even though I heavily disagree with it. But Ponder? PONDER? That card is like 1/2 - 3/2 additional fetchlands.

Brainstorm and Ponder?  Blue has been seriously neutered.  My guess can only be that Wizards want to bring a new crowd back into Vintage where janky non-blue aggro decks can have a fighting chance.  The old guard is surely upset, but I'm dying to read Wizards reasoning on this on Friday.

I think I'm going to quit now.
Brainstorm and Ponder are they serious, one or the other but not both.
Who wants to buy my Vintage stuff because we all may as well play extended and standard from now on, won't be much difference.
Did they give a reason why BS and ponder bit the dust?  I won't be able to read the article till tomorrow.

This thread will be 10 pages by tomorrow, who's up for a bet?

Like I said in the tourney announcement forum, I honestly believe a lot of people are just gonna make their own list up at this point.

Welcome to September 1st, 2004. Only Vintage. It's a pretty reasonable comparison, given how warped Legacy became after that. That was a completely new, open format. God only knows what's going to happen to Vintage now, aside the more obvious decks in Ichorid, Workshop, and Long. Given how Legacy's changed so much since then, It'll be interesting to follow Vintage over the next few months.

That said, I'm still rather upset about this. I was really starting to get back into Type 1, and then they go rape the format.

Long without Brainstorm?  Eww.

But seriously, as distressing as this change is, it certainly makes my imagination asplode.  Right up to about five minutes ago, thinking about Vintage entitled contemplating how to best use Brainstorm.  Now, it doesn't.  Huh.  My brain is growing rapidly.

EDIT: Just looked.  The entire first page of this forum is now invalid.  Completely.

Did anyone personally have a problem with 4x brainstorm legal? Out of all the people I've ever met who play the format, only one person I've ever met said they disliked 4x brainstorm, and that guy was just being difficult... and playing shop.

Well R. I. P. vintage magic as we know it, Brainstorm really, was this card that threatening. Ponder it was a socery for crying out loud. Wizrds you just gave shop decks and ichorid a huge advantage, well back to square 1 with my deck.

It is a real big surprise.

We could guess that they would do something to Flash. I would rather restrict only merchant to avoid killing an archetype like Flash, I'm sure it would have been enough. Merchant Scroll and Gush are also logical choices. But I have difficulties to explain the restriction of Brainstorm and Ponder. Control were just rising up, and the DCI decided to kill it.

This will bring real changes in Vintage and in building most of the archetypes.
