The Cary Cup #2 - 20 Proxy Vintage - 6/14/08 - Apex, NC at All Fun and Games

What is the Cary Cup?

A 2008 Vintage Magic series in Cary, NC. At the conclusion of each event, the "winner" of that event will have his/her name inscribed on the Cary Cup. I say "winner" because if there is a split... the highest ranked splitter after swiss will be the "winner." No exceptions (as in working out who is the "winner" in the split). Additionally, I will personally put $1 in the Cary Cup for each person who attends each Cary Cup event before the final one. The money from ALL previous Cary Cup events will remain in the Cary Cup until the LAST event (tba), at which point the winner of the last Cary Cup event gets the first place prize for that event, the actual Cary Cup with his/her name on it as the overall winner AND all of the money inside of it. Finally, any person with their name inscribed on the Cary Cup gets FREE entry to ALL subsequent Cary Cup events.

Here is the Cary Cup:

That's gotta sting......especially considering that PM you sent me about ichorid the other day.

I wish I could have made it up there, instead I spent the day at the DMV (yes, it took me a year to pull myself there to become a South Carolina citizen...luckily I don't have to go back for 10 years). I'll do my best to pull a crew of 3-5 people up there for your next tournament.

What a diverse metagame! THREE Gush players? ZERO Flash players? What an excellent format....

My Super Exciting Report:

R1: vs. Ichorid
G2: I have leyline+tutor for jailer
G3: He mulls to 1

1-0

R2: vs. Tyrant Oath
G1: He has t1 oath+orchard with fow backup for my force. Next turn also ancestral
G2: He has t1 fastbond which i force. He obv drops oath+orchard like next turn, but I scroll for e-truth and go on to win with dryad.
G3: He has t1 brain for my duress and t2 orchard oath. Note that he proxied a volcanic island and i thought it was a mox, so i duressed the wrong card regardless. Pretty gay. (I'm not calling hax here, just saying that proxies without visual representation are bad for the format.)

If the format wasn't rotating, I would try find a better sb card for the oath match, since fucking seal of primordium blows. Hard.

1-1

R3: vs. R/G beats
G1: My hand is like 2x duress, fow, gush, fetch, fastbond, scroll. He plays root maze, which i force. Next turn he wastes my land and drops fucking ankh of mishra. I topdeck a fetch (obv) and duress him again (woo). He drops pyrostatic pillar and eventually kills me with genju of spires.
G2: More of the same.

1-2 drop.

Cody and Bert and people try to get me not to drop, but alas a little too late. I'm done with the format. I decline to play in the side event so i can get food later. lolz.

I'll be sticking up my report sometime today.  I had a lot of fun meeting with everyone.  I look forward to the next tournament (I probably wont be playing Ichorid) and hope we get a big turn out.  BTW I had three different player try to jinx me (Darien, Bert and Cody) and Darien was the only one to get me to mull to 1 without finding a bazaar Razz.

EDIT: The "Replenish.dec" is called PandaBurst.  It uses pandemonium and saproling burst to deal 21 damage straight to the dome, replenish is used after they counter the two (or you intuition for the pieces).

I board 4x Leyline and 4x Pithing Needle and I still can't beat Ichorid...

It was a pretty fun tournament, and the new venue kicks the crap out of Sports Zone.  I only wish the turnout had been better, we were only 2 players short for another Swiss round.  We weren't sure if it was gas prices or the Burlington PTQ that kept people away.  Oh well.

Big props to Zherbus for making the epic trek up, especially since he was so tired he lost a game due to thinking he'd Time Walked, when in fact he had forgotten to Sad

Big slops to any locals that didn't make it, and to P for showing up but not playing.  A pox on all of you.

And props to Wiley, the unassuming fellow who quietly Zombie Tokened the big win.

I've actually tried this, it didn't make a respectable dent in the game 1 percentages, however games 2-3 it did help more thanks to the fact that you can hard cast it more easily.  The drawback is you lose yawg will functionality ... which ultimately slows the clock down and gives ichorid even more chance to come back and win.

Drain Tendrils is an awesome deck and has sharpened my control-combo skills a lot (more so than any other deck I ever played), it just doesn't have the speed necessary to beat Ichorid most of the time Sad

And props to Wiley, the unassuming fellow who quietly Zombie Tokened the big win.

"The greatest enemies are those who can walk among you without notice."  Glad I wasn't very intimidating Razz

To the Raleigh crew:  If you ever want to get some games in against anything I would be glad and honored to be one of your playtest partners.  I love playing a wide variety of decks, so anything I can proxy up is fair game.  Shoot me a pm if your interested.
