I'll be watching it sometime today. Figured we could use a thread to discuss it though! Please please please spoiler tag and make text white (i.e. need to be highlightable) for those who haven't seen it yet if you want to reveal!
From all early reports though, this is the best movie of the year and Heath Ledger makes the Joker truly what he's most remembered for from the comics vs. Nicholson's portrayal.

At the theater I was at there were 12 midnight shows and they were all sold out. The movie is unbelievably awesome. It's the best movie I've seen in a great while. Can't wait to go watch it again.

The movie was unreal. I thought Batman Begins was a good movie, but not a great movie. I am actually a big fan of the original Tim Burton Batman films.
This movie wasn't really like any of the previous Batman films. It wasn't even about Batman or the Joker really.
I was blown away.

Saw it last night and despite me being tired I really enjoyed this movie and I thought Heath Ledger was scary as hell as the Joker. I would highly recommend going to see this movie. I am going to see it again tonight and I am not paying for it again. Not paying to see Dark Knight twice = priceless. Brennen

I really did enjoy what they did with the Joker but I didn't like the new two-face. There was not a whole lot of dialogue in this film or plot to be quite honest. Basically they tried to make this kinda preachy movie with what little dialogue there was and then load the rest of the movie up with expensive(and cool) action scenes. And I hated the ending so much. Batman has one rule only, he even says it in the film: don't kill anybody while fighting crime. Then he just accepts all these murders for two-face basically because Alfred never gave him the letter he was supposed to get...so lame. If Batman ever did murder someone it should be the Joker because out of all the hopeless terrorists in Gotham he is by far the worst. The movie had a comic book feel to it. The whole movie was practically hinging on what the Joker did, even if he wasn't around. I think this movie suffers very, very badly from over-hype and that all of the media coverage and fanatical moviegoers are giving it more credit than it deserves. This movie was an extremely flashy b-movie. They really try to go over-the-top with the action sequences to cover up for the fact that most of the scant plot material they have to work with has been covered already in one, if not all, of the past five batman movies already out.

I don't believe I spoil anything in this post but it is a rebuttal to Feyd's so be wary. * * * * * * * * * * * * The change of how 2f became 2f bugged me slightly but the fact that he acted perfectly in line w/ the comic was excellent (as opposed to all 3 spider man movies). The same can be said for the Joker. Also, the dialogue kept me on the edge of my seat. Batman has always been a story of extremely hard moral choices to me, and the joker is the best villain in that universe because he has his own set of twisted morals that he believes wholeheartedly everyone else shares ... including bats. Joker lets this shine through during every conversation he has in the film, especially when he tries to get bats to adopt his set of morals.
Regarding the movie hinging on the Joker all the time: this is because of the sheer presence he has in the minds of Gotham's citizens. He introduced himself by killing figure heads of the city, then he went on rampage after rampage through its streets. By the end of the movie he has the minds of Gotham in the palm of his twisted hands thanks to their fear.
As for the action sequences, all of the explosives are typical for a hero movie and they were all done really well here. However, the sequences where there was very little actual action were the most gripping parts of the film, such as the boats or little Reece and his blackmail scheme.
This movie is filled with more drama than most modern suspense-horror films and I ate it up like candy! As for bats' choice at the end, well it is exactly what he did in the comics. He is called the dark knight for a reason. He protects his people even when they hunt him, he was always taking the blame for the deaths he couldn't prevent.

So... I saw it. Pretty good I guess.
...
Best movie of the year and for me best comic book movie made so far. Heath was insane as the Joker and I don't think I've ever heard quite the mix of amusement, horror and holy shit when the Joker did his magic trick. SO GOOD. More detailed thoughts later.
P.S. Anyone want to take a guess at how much movie it banks opening weekend?

They're reporting $18.5m from the midnight showings alone.
In other news, if you haven't yet, go see this movie!

Wow this movie is spectacular. Heath Ledger absolutely stole the show, in what was the role of a lifetime. I agree that this is the best comic book movie to date, even better than Batman Begins. I don't know where Nolan will go from here, with the actual star of the series no longer around. It's going to be really hard to top this movie, as none of the Batman villains are in the same league as the joker and I don't know who can hope to follow Ledger. Any bets on the next villain? I'm betting either Poison Ivy or Catwoman, but that's obviously just a shot in the dark.

I bet one of those 2 women you mentioned and Penguin. Of course, that is nothing but complete guesswork. I would love it to be Mr. Freeze, he's my fav villain. They're really setting themselves up for failure in the next sequel because it is going to be freaking tough to come within the same league as Ledger's Joker again.

Nolan himself was asked if he would just exclude the Joker character, or cast someone else. He said that he will cast someone else, but may not need to because the Riddler is another Psychotic Badguy. He also mentioned he would have done clayface, except the sandman was already done.

What I'd like to see in the sequel is with Dent gone, Batman now "persecuted" by police and the effectiveness of the "freaks" made obvious by Joker's antics is a full out mob war, with Black Mask coming in as the main bad guy and some of the lower level Batman villains (Killer Kroc anyone?) brought in as muscle against Batman. Maybe run a Catwoman side storyline, playing into what happened to Rachel Dawes and Bruce's vulnerabilities. Trying to top Joker likely won't happen, so might as well play up the aftermath.

I feel like with the tone set by Dark Knight...a good combination of villains would be..
1. Firefly (this can be realistic..guy with flamethrowers and a jetpack blowing everything to bits!)
2. And as a secondary minor villain either Killer Kroc or Ventriloquist & Scarface (The split-personality guy with the doll scarface)
Firefly could fill the action roll while the ventriloquist can keep the creepy pyscho badguy motif (if he's done creepy and not creepy/funny like chucky)

The movie was amazing. The Joker really pulled it together. I didn't think that anyone would top Jack Nicholson as The Joker, but Heath Ledger actually did just that. He alone was worth the price of admission, and the entire thing was good.
...
SPOILER ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ...... ............ ...... ...... ...... ..... ...... ...... ...... ...... ............ ...... ...... My main issue was the end. Why did Batman take it on himself? It would have been simple to say that some thugs had set things up. There was really no reason it had to be Batman.
Overall, it was a great movie.

As Maroni tells him earlier in the film, the criminals of the underworld are "wise to his game" now. A scary voice and some broken jaws aren't going to be enough to instill fear in people and keep them off the streets for much longer. Joker points out that everyone now knows Batman's "one rule" - no killing. So he had to take it up a notch, and since he can't actually go out and kill someone, he will take credit for the murders to become "the hero Gotham deserves".

I liked the pencil disappearing trick, beats the behind the ear trick. I wasn't a fan of Bat Man talking like Darth Vader when he had his suit on (I realize he couldn't talk like Bruce Wayne, but c'mon that was excessive). Batman took the blame in the end to make Dent have a positive influence over Gothan as opposed to the negative touch he would have if he died a murderer.

I pretty much liked everything in the movie, only a few slips here and there.
And the joker really was amazing in this movie.
It's more of a "joker movie" then a batman movie....I was watching it with 3 of my friends, and when we got out of the cinema all of us where just talking about the joker, hardly even a line dropped about batman.
I really liked how they kept the theme from the first movie, "Fear".

The Joker really pulled it together. I didn't think that anyone would top Jack Nicholson as The Joker, but Heath Ledger actually did just Hold on a min Atog! comparing these jokers isn't really fair. They are two different animals. Personally I like Jack's Portrail of a more fun and a much more hilarious Joker. Jack just had more screen time and more funny. OMG this just in they're gunna do something completely new and make a villain even darker! O Wait they make every villain dark nevermind. Although I did love Heath's Portrail and I did love this movie. The Joker was special to me because he was a man who loved to laugh. P.S. I also love the Mark Hammil 1992 cartoon Joker

That was actually from the famous film footage by Roger Patterson & Robert Gimlin of Bigfoot which the art for Assquach is based on.
