There has been quite a few promo foils that have reprinted since Revised. Most staples from Revised were reprinted as long as there were in the Reprint policy. Some reprints include Balance, Sol Ring, Demonic Tutor, Black Knight, Crusade, Counterspell, Drain Life, Giant Growth, Hypnotic Specter, Icy Manipulator, Juggernaut, Llanowar Elves, Lord of Atlantis, Regrowth, Swords To Plowshares, Wrath of God and many, many more.

It seems as if DCI forget two of the most played staples in Magic history, Nevinyrral's Disk and Winter Orb. Those two cards seem to me the "missing links" for Revised foil reprints.

I now ask you this, can you think of any other Revised staples that DCI seemed to neglect? If so, let me know so that we can get a good list going if any.

P.S. - Wizards, Please reprint Nevinyrral's Disk and Winter Orb as promo foils. We'll love you for it.  Wink

Personally I would like to see Red Elemental blast, Gorilla Shaman, Pheldigriff, and Tolarian Academy done as promo foils.

Mystical Tutor
Control Magic
Winter Orb

Personally I'm not a huge fan of foil, but I understand the allure.  I would much rather see staples done as extended art or textless.

Brainstorm
Dark Ritual
Duress
Counterspell
Red Elemental Blast
Blue Elemental Blast

If I wanted foil I would ask for:

Force of Will
Strip Mine
Elvish Spirit Guide
Tolarian Academy
Mana Crypt
Mana Vault
Gorilla Shaman
Null Rod
Animate Dead
Fastbond
Necropotence (not the Deckmaster one)
Red and Blue Blasts
Mystical Tutor
Imperial Seal
Wheel of Fortune
Grim Tutor

Thats all I can think of right now (they wont print anything currently worth over $100)

Foils are stupid; if I wanted to play with shiny things I'd go to Claire's instead of a Magic Tournament.

That said, the only old-school card that might actually be neat to foil out is Chaos Orb, since its being foil might actually matter.

they already made the best chaos orb possible.  It's 6x9 and blows up the world.

Just ask ray about his entire 6x9 deck, I'm pretty sure someone had to of taken pics at my tournament.

Textless Dark Ritual V1

I am not a fan of driving prices down with reprints.  When the do something like reprint Ponder as a textless card, I think that it's a win win.  Cards like Gorilla Shaman, that cost next to nothing are the best way to go IMO.  They do not affect the existing values, but instead put a new card on the market of value.  It is discouraging for collectors when they lose chunks of value at a time with a single reprint, such as what will happen with the Thunder Dragon reprint.  Disk and Orb are certainly notable in the history of Magic, and would be reasonable reprints as the revised versions are not worth much.  The reprint would be unlikely to hurt the Alpha/Beta market, as those collectors are often uninterested in new cards.

Of course the first candidates for promos would be Illusionary Mask, Time Vault and Chains of Mephistopheles, just to get the new Oracle wording out there.  Or textless!

So do a ton of other cards that still got promoed.

Like
FoF, Tog, Avalanch Riders, duress, Brainstorm, Piledriver, Engineered plague etc. etc.

I think Ritual is a perfect candidate, and i'm sort of surprised its never happened before.

I was only really referring to Revised cards, but if you guys prefer to include anything I wouldn't mind seeing Mox Diamond and Hatred foiled out. Imagine how cool that would be. Now you can completely foil out your Legacy Aggro Loam decks with shiny Mox Diamonds.  Wink

I agree that Foil Dual Lands would be the bomb, since they're in the Reprint Policy and everyone uses them in the Eternal format.

Ashen Ghoul and Nether Shadow are also cool candidates that I would drool over if I could aquire a foil playset.

Welcome to the free market. Speculation inherently involves risk. If people don't want to risk losing money on their investment, they should stay out of the singles market.

Welcome to the free market. Speculation inherently involves risk. If people don't want to risk losing money on their investment, they should stay out of the singles market.

That statement incorrectly makes the assumption that Magic cards are an asset, not a liability.  Magic cards, for the most part, at best keep up with inflation, and at worst lose all value over time.  There are very few exceptions, such as the very rare jump in price such as Strategic Planning.  If you were to visually display the values of all cards over time, it would show downward trends on almost everything.  Even the growth of power over the last 8 years has been barely better than actual inflation rates.  That said, if a player has a collection based with a high enough volume of tournament staples, they goal would be for them to cash out and not take a massive net loss from their years of collecting.  Massive reprinting of Duals, Forces, and other tournament staples would ensure massive price drops.

As an investment, buying and holding cards is abysmal compared to the performances of more conventional investments.  The idea is for a collection of cards to hold some of their value, and be easily liquidated if need be.  The concept of cards as collectibles only works if they can hold their value somewhat.  If people acquire cards, have fun playing the game, and know they can liquidate their collection without a massive net loss, the game can survive.  If players know they are just pissing away money when they purchase cards, then Magic loses a trait that differentiates it from so many other hobbies and games.

Collectors are not in the "singles market."  They are people who collect cards with the expectation that Wizards will not completely devalue all their purchases.  While I don't think Wizards should refrain from reprinting all cards of value, I believe it is better for the future of the game when the aim for less expensive reprints when possible.

This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the RED pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.

Another card that comes to mind, that I believe should be reprinted as a foil is Strip Mine. It's been reprinted in 4th edition which is an obvious reason.

@foil Thunder Dragon - Yeah, Vault set FTW. I wonder if dealers on ebay and such would be selling them as playsets? Only time will tell.
