I'd like to thank Dan and everyone at Myriad for another great event.  The new improved prize structure is certainly succeeding, as we're back up to the 30+ crowds of old.  Now it's on us, the New England Vintage Community, to keep Myriad events growing and strong.  Speaking of growing, there were many new faces at Myriad, and I hope they return for future events.  The community building prizes are definitely doing their job, and everyone who plays in New England benefits from the new blood Myriad works hard to bring in.  Missing out on the Top 4 split was disappointing, as they each took home like $150 in Myriad Money.  Even with missing the big pay day, I was able to get several new games, which will be great for upcoming game nights.

My favorite part of the tournament happened during the Top 8 vs Tyler Huff.  The back story - I spent a good chunk of round 4 and 5 talking with him about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  In the US, practicing BJJ is often called grappling or rolling.  I built a small Dojo in my basement about a year ago.  I've been practicing with friends 3 days a week, mostly learning off the wealth of videos on the internet.  Tyler has been training with actual teachers, and has competed in NAGA.  I found the discussion with him to be very interesting and informative.  I look forward to seeing him at more events in the future.

As we sit down and begin to shuffle, Tyler jokes that, if after two games we're tied, we roll to see who wins.  I am dead serious as I inform him that offering to roll to determine who wins a match is a serious infraction, and could get him DQ'd without prize.  He then has to explain to me that I'm retarded, because he was joking about having a Jiu Jitsu match aka Rolling, and not rolling a die to randomly determine a winner.  As such, we began Game 1 with me looking like the double threat of both a rule lawyer and a moron.

This event was more than worthy of a tournament report, as there was a bunch of stuff that would have made for a good read.  Unfortunately, I've been swamped all week preparing for the baby shower, so I won't have time to do anything comprehensive.

Round 1 Bomberman featuring Aven Mindcensor

His main plan is Trinket Mage into Lotus, into Mindcensor or another Mage.  This creates a disruptive 5 turn clock.  It also makes Mindslaver a far from an auto win.  I'm able to use Slaver to good effect in this match, but he does get one game with a Salvagers combo.

Round 2 Belcher

This favorable match up gets even more lopsided after boarding.  Gorilla Shaman and Goblin Welder is a savage tag team vs artifact plans.

Round 3 Grim Long

Since this player had beaten the person I carpooled with, I was focus as much as possible.  Slaver was huge in the games, as was Duress

Round 4 ID
Round 5 ID

Top 8 Tyler

Game 1 I bust out a huge amount of Empty the Warrens tokens and I saw none of his deck.  I thought he was playing a painter combo deck, but as it turns out, it was basically a welder control deck.

Game 2 I boarded out my robots, as I expect to kill him with his own combo.  He had boarded out the combo in favor of Serendibs, and I die despite getting Slaver online, and having access to Tinker.  He was at one life, and I had missed attacking with Welder to bluff Thirst several times in the early game.

Game 3 An early Serendib chips away at the life totals and Welder joins in, while Duress starts to clear the way for me.  Gorilla Shaman keeps his Welder at bay, but I'm mana flooded hard.  I end up in bad shape, seeing only mana and Mindslaver off Top.  I eventually have a chance to stack the draw from Top, and Tap to draw, which would have given me Black Lotus and Mindslaver in hand for the hardcast and activation.  I don't make the play, and I end up losing.  Had I made the play, I would have been able to use his welder to recur slaver enough times to draw into Mystical for Yawgmoth's Will.  The total number of turns would have actually been enough to kill him with his own Serendib damage.  The delayed turn from not using top optimally would have been acceptable, if he didn't tinker on his turn into a Mindslaver of his own.  He wanted to get DSC, but it was in his hand, so he grabbed slaver disappointedly.  Had he been able to grab DSC, I would have been able to begin my Slaver turns and get there.

I end up in 7th, and I spend my store credit on some great new games, including some Fluxx Products, and "We Didn't Playtest This at All"

Thanks again to Myriad and the New England Vintage Community for making New England the best place in the world for Vintage.

There are some odd card choices.  I'm particularly WTF-ing the lack of Strategic Planning.

I think Strategic Planning is over-hyped.  Is dumping two random cards and digging three cards deep that awesome?.  I think it did so well because many people hadn't seen it before and, after reading it, decided it was awful.  They may have been right about that.  How is Telling Time and/or Impulse just not strictly better.  In their own reports, Demars and McCarthy said they would largely use it to dig into counters and fill the graveyard for a larger Will.  You don't need to dump two random cards to make a graveyard lethal for Will and I can see many times where you wouldn't want to dump the other two cards anyway.  New England players probably realize this and have decided to play other cards in that slot.

Strategic planning isn't really all that and a bag of potato chips it appears.  It might have proven a novelty that has made a bunch of dealers a lot of money since the worlds top 8.

I was planning on coming to this but some garbage happened friday and I had to stay home for the weekend.

tyler:nothing like coming out of retirement after a year and dominating people with CONTROL MAGIC AND SERENDIB EFREET  that is the fuckin shit right there!!!

What the hell happened to workshop combo this month?  bad beats?

0-6 in games.  Dispite running a nearly idential deck to last tournement. I just couldn't get there.  I really don't think I mulled aggressivly enough, I only drew 1 or 2 shops in all my games.  There was some frowntowns... null rod was involved... it was a massicre.

I've been playing the same list quite some time now.  I've believe I've Top 8'd every tournament I've run it in, winning or splitting in most of them.  I've never been a slave to the popular opinion, and Strategic Planning is entirely hype.  Top fits better with my Empty the Warrens plan, it another artifact for Thirst, and is reusable.  It plays better with Mana Drain, and is much better vs Duress.  I've won tournaments with Oath of Psychatog.  Just because someone puts up some results in a tournament, doesn't mean their card choices are optimal.  The biggest improvement to the actual gameplan of Slaver, without a doubt, has been the 3x Empty the Warrens.  It gives Slaver the "oops, I win" factor which it has always lacked.  It definitely adds much more than a little extra filtering at sorcery speed.

Think about it though- You literally forced people to run Null Rod because of the last tournament....I think this means the Magic gods name a street after you or something.

Strategic Planning:  I just can't imagine how two finalists from Worlds, the entire Meandeck Thinktank, and Rich Shay are all simultaneously wrong ...Rich Shay?!?! He's almost never wrong... let's get serious, please.

That's like saying that Yoda AND Palpatine have herculean misconceptions about the force : O

This tournament was sweet.

It was nice to see people I hadn't seen in a while,
and it was nice to see players new to Vintage giving it a spin.

Also, congratulations to all the people who came back from hiatus to top 8.

I'll make an effort to attend one or two of these during the school year,
since playing at Myriad is always a lot of fun!
