Thank you to everyone who made this event a success.  Events at Over the Edge have improved each time, and I'm certain that ELD's Mox XX will follow that trend.  Being the first tournament to have Shards of Alara legal made for an uncertain field.  Would Tezzeret be as good as he looks on paper?  Would Ad Naseum break the format?  Would anyone figure out how to use Ethersworn Cannonist?  After 5 rounds of swiss, and a Top 8 that left only one man standing, we had our answers.

Tezzeret was as good as he looked, maybe better.  Steve Houdlette made the best use of a Tezzeret for this tournament.  Also known as Grand Inquisitor, Steve's list allowed him to break through a pattern of making Top 8 nearly every event, but not ultimately hitting the big payday.  His innovation combined with his always solid play may have been the difference this time around.

Ad Naseum didn't impact things in terms of making a Top 8, but many people were prepared to face Tendrils strategies.  In the control heavy New England meta, the deck may not show up in enough numbers to have a great chance at Top 8ing.  With Drains and Shops both being played by some of the stronger players, and being so omnipresent, it may be a while before we see a deck based on this plan break out and show its raw power.

Ethersworn Cannonist was joined by several new artifacts in Jeff Carpenter's second place list.  His only loss on the day was to Steve's 1st place Tezzeret deck.  Bookending his tournament with a first round loss, he swept right up to the finals, where he found the match up to be no less favorable.  A quick combo Game 1, and artifact destruction en masse Game 3 ended his day, but not discussion of his deck.  Many players are drawn to his idea of artifact beats coupled with actual counters.  The deck has the ferocity of Mono Red Shops, but can actually play a game with the stack via Force of Will.  Cannonist, Counterbalance and Thorn can lock up the board as effectively a most Shop locks, and creature beats close the door quickly.  I'm certain the deck will stick around as people tinker with the design.

Congratulations to Jeff Carpenter, winner of the pre-registration door prize.  Pre-registering really does help a great deal, and I ask that anyone planning on coming just contact me if possible.  This will enter you into the drawing, and makes setting up so much easier.  For his IM, Jeff received this Foil ELD Proxy Ancestral Recall:

The Top 8 was playing for a wide selection of prizes.  In all my events, I try and give people options, so everyone goes home with cards they really want.  Everyone who Top 8's at a ELD Mox event gets a Custom Proxy.  These Custom Proxies are gold numbered 1st-8th and dated for the tournament.  The Custom Proxies are voted on in the Community Forum on TMD.  For this event the Custom Proxy was Strategic Planning.  For ELD's Mox XX, it is Time Vault.

@Jeff
In a reply to Demonic Attorney's report you said Forcefield wasn't used once. What was the reasoning behind the card and would you run it again? Or what would you replace it with?

And why is the Tolaria West in there?

Yet another awesome tournament, Eric. The combination of well-run event and great prize support really makes these a boon for New England.

I would cut forcefield, it wasn't really great...  but here was the idea:

The task was finding an artifact answer to Tinker and/or welder+thirst tricks.  AEther spellbomb was ok... but as a 1-of it's not that hot.  Also it doesn't do enough against oath, where they can just oath again.

The deck I ran has a very un-fish-like quality in that Master of Etherium scales with the gamestate.  So the longer and longer we play, the bigger he gets.  This gives me inevitablity.  At the tournement I was able to wait out a Greater Gargadon and eventually grow Master big enough to go toe to toe with the 9/7 monster (with the help of Jitte).  This means an answer like Maze of Ith or Forcefield is very powerful.

Tolaria West was good at what it needed to be.  Of the 4 times I drew it, twice I played it as a land - because I needed blue.  Twice I transmuted it for tolarian.  Even with a few artifacts in play, Tolaria West can be the Blue Ritual.

Jeff, did you ever test out brain freeze as an alternate win condition?  You have the makings of the sensei, sensei combo already with sculptor and tops.
