Sadmer Crematorium

Land

T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
BW, T:  Remove target card in a graveyard from the game.  If that card was a creature, you gain 1 life.

In a world of ceaseless war, the task of the cremator is great.

As a player who partakes in a number of casual formats (Five color, Peasant Highlander, Mental Magic) on a fairly regular basis I have always wanted a card like this to play in my control decks.  There are numerous times that I would have played a card like this in Standard as well.

Basically, I wanted a land that had the power to remove a card in the graveyard from the game at instant speed, as well as make mana.  I chose to have the activation cost be WB for two reasons:  Firstly, I wanted to make it somewhat difficult to activate, and BW are two colors that don't tend to get played a ton together because they never have great cards.  I feel that if the activation cost would have been UB or GB the ability would have been undercosted--but, at WB the ability is really powerful but not broken in constructed formats.  In addition, I felf from a flavor point of view WB fit the card very well because cremation is a ritual dealing with the dead, but also about respectfully and honorably disposing of remains.  (Death and honor = BW)

I added the gain 1 life to the card to emphasize the fact that cremation is done to people, and that it is a business.  A crematorium has the capability to incenerate all sorts of things, but when it cremates creatures it gets paid for doing its service!  The gain 1 life is also a harkening back to Grave Robbers from the dark.

I think you could probably make this just black to activate.  The ability doesn't seem particularly white to me.  In fact the same sounds sort of reddish.

Other than that, cool idea.  I would look into restricting it to just removing creatures though; it fits the flavor a tad better.

Power-wise, it doesn't need to take mana to use its ability at all; the main point is to not give this ability out to every color (although Scrabbling Claws etc. do exist). I would either drop the mana requirement entirely (making it a non-cantripping, uncounterable Claws) or make the cost just {B} and up the reward to 2 life.

I really like this card. I like Matt's suggestion of making the cost  {B} and/or increasing the creature reward to 2 life. Would this be overpowered if the land tapped for  {W} rather than  {1} ? It would seem to me that if the activation was  {B} and the mana production was  {W}, it would stay true to the your basic vision for the card in terms of flavor (Which was very well conveyed, by the way) while also allowing it to see some constructed-format play beyond it's intended niche of  {B} {W}.

Though it would probably get a CITP restriction or it would be better than a basic plains in  {B}/X control decks or any control deck that could splash  {B} and wouldn't turn its nose up at a little free  {W}.

Essentially this in multiples is like saying "Wrath/Damnation/Counter, gain 4+life next turn."

So, would people be comfortable if it was:

Sadmer Crematorium

T:  add 1 to your mana pool.
BT: Remove target card in a graveyard from the game.  If that card was a creature card, gain 1 life.

I really liked the feel of the card coinciding with the reasoning behind the card.

I do however agree that its not too powerful and I would rather it be just  {Tap} colorless /  {Tap} to remove a card in the graveyard from the game.  If it is a creature gain one life.

I prefer simple and sweet usually.  As for it then fitting into all decks that's a good thing To me.

If you stick the way you are then that's cool too, being able to activate it more than ones is nice.  Maybe up the power and make it  {Tap} for a black or white, appropriately some how.

'CIP tapped if you control no Swamps' would allow this to be used in all decks but make the card a lot better in Black decks. In that case you wouldn't need a B, T: activation cost, just T; would be fine. Green and White may well argue that the ability could be theirs too. In that case, rather than 'CIP tapped if you control no Swamps, Plains or Forests'I'd rather ditch the CIP clause altogether

From a flavour point of view (and for card simplicity) I'd change the ability to

Sadmer Crematorium

T:  add 1 to your mana pool.
T: Remove target creature card in a graveyard from the game. Gain 1 life.

Hell (no pun intended) you could make it Dark-esque re Eater of the Dead

Sadmer Crematorium

T:  add 1 to your mana pool.
T, Remove target creature card in a graveyard from the game: Gain 1 life.

Hmm.  I really wanted the card to hit any card in a graveyard.

If people don't think it is overpowered without black mana, then I guess that I am fine with it too.

So, what do I do now that the card is designed?
