I'm not sure that this personal issue should have been publicly announced without Dan's permission. And since you did do it, you could have at least explained the situation.
Good luck and best wishes Dan.

Wait, what? Whatever this is, it belongs in Community. Also, provided the details don't invade someone's privacy, I think some more explanation would be helpful.

I'll shed some light on the situation, even though I understand my friend and teammate's reasoning.
At this past Saturday's Blue Bell tournament, Mike (MISTERTREK) announced that Dan was not present because he has been recently diagnosed with leukemia. He did say that they caught it early, but he didn't have any other details.
Dan, I wish you well and apologize if you did not want this information to become public in this manner.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully you will be well enough to sling cards soon.

id like to thank everyone that has given me so much support. I finished my first round of chemo and have a test coming soon to see if im good. So far my doctors think my prognosis is good so im looking at a couple months of s little chemo each month or a bone marrow transplant. If im not in the hospital or recovering from a round of chemo expect me at the next blue bell

I spoke with Dan on the phone yesterday. He sounded in good spirits, and as he said, is hopeful to return to the Magic scene soon. We'll keep him in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy and permanent recovery. Now get better you hairy thing you!

to give an update i am currently in the hospital getting a round of chemo. The good news is my most recent tests showed no signs of cancer so things are looking as good as they could possibly be. The best part is that barring any setbacks i should be able to attend the feb 7th blue bell. With all this time on my hands i have been brainstorming and new tech will crush your dreams, the player of the year will beback better than ever

Dan Herd, age 25, dead this morning @ 7AM.
He introduced me to Vintage and made me go to my first tournament. He was the local asshole, but also a friend. R.I.P.

Dan was a good magic player, and an even better friend. He will be sorely missed. Courteny, his widow, emailed me his Obit and I felt noticing this it was right to post it here. I encourage all those who looked on him as a friend to attend.
Daniel Eugene Herd, 25, Pottstown, PA died on Thursday, April 9, 2009 in the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA following a brief illness. He was the husband of Courtney Lynn (Pennington) Herd whom he married on October 18, 2008.
Born in Phoenixville, PA he was a son of Richard and Deborah (Breslin) Herd of Royersford, PA. He played football while at Spring-Ford High School and graduated in 2002. He also attended Drexel University.
Dan worked for Armond Aquatech in Bridgeport, PA.
A fluent player of MAGIC The Gathering card game, his team was called Rebel Alliance.
Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are: Brother, Donald Nieces, Angel and Lisa Aunts, Donna and Denise In-Laws, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Pennington
A viewing will be held at the Devlin-Rosmos-Kepp Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 517 S. Main Street, Phoenixville, PA on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
Relatives and friend are invited to attend his Funeral Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lewis Road and Walnut Street, Royersford, PA on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at 10:00 am with Rev. Timothy M. Judge officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Ann Cemetery, Phoenixville.

I've been having this weigh on me all day now. I'm still not quite sure what to write or how to react. I've already experienced shock, anger and sadness... I was left alone to my thoughts on a car ride this evening and I found myself fighting tears. Dan was someone that made me feel like I've known him my whole life. It seemed like everytime I made the trip to Philly, I was paired with him.. and the time he traveled to Pittsburgh, we were of course paired... it seemed unavoidable.... but our games were always fun; we'd joke back and forth and keep such a casual attitute. It was clear that he loved this game, but more so that he loved his friends and the good times that came from being with them. I enjoyed being in his company and do consider lucky to have known him and blessed to consider him as a friend. I of course offer my deepest sympathies to his wife, family and friends. I just want to add how much each and everyone of you in the community means to me and to one another. It's amazing how many close friendships have been established within this game and in Dan's spirit I want to just state how thankful I am to all of you for being who you are, making this game what it is and most of all the good times that have come from knowing all of you.

I agree with this statement. I don't play this game competitively just based on enjoyment. Most of the reason I play this game is because I can interact with so many members of the community who I have met throughout the years. Guys who make you feel welcome. Dan was one of those guys. I had never met him until TravisCon, and within 5 minutes we were joking around, all smiles and enjoying ourselves. We got to talk a lot that day. And moreso day 2. It hurts a lot when you're faced with your own mortality: even moreso when someone you respect passes.

The last time I got to talk to dan was on march 21st . The phone call in the a.m was a happy as hell Dan! We talked about the day of cards ahead for me,and how he was upset that he could not make it. He told me how much better he was feeling and that he was not gonna miss the next event. I did well that day ,lol got myself a teeshirt. On the way home once again my phone rang ...It was Dan. We bullshitted about the day. Dan gave me congrats on a good performance, then told me about the bluebell teams that was starting on 4/4/09. I took Dans offer to be on his team that day. I have kept my mind very busy the last few days. About a half hour ago I was doing some easter shopping with my son. I hear the daddy daddy yell, which as we all know means ... I want it, I want it, I want it!!!!! I looked down to see what it was .. It was a starwars toy. It killed me inside a little, all I could do is think about Dan.We vintage guys are a fun fucked up brotherhood,I love ya all... in a totally non-gay way...not that there is anything wrong with being gay lol!!!!!!! I miss the hell out of that hairy wookiee.

Dan you will be missed, in good times and bad! I'm sure you're playing in a vintage event somewhere this weekend, God Bless. Mike
CCGames will be running a T1 event in May to honor Dan, with all proceeds being donated to the Daniel Herd Memorial Fund. It will be our way of saying goodbye to our current T1 champion. Please see my post in the event listing or visit our website.

This is very sad. I am blessed to have met the people I have throughout the years, and we all must remember that life is short. I love playing this game, for the friendships that we form, and remembering the "Oh so amazing" game you just had. My sympathies to his family...
