We do this thread every year. http://www.themanadrain.com/index.php?topic=35125.0

I haven't seen all of the films I might list yet, so I'll wait until the end of the month to post mine.

Here is a list of 2008 releases: http://www.the-numbers.com/movies/index2008.php

What were your top 10 films of 2008?

Wow, I missed a lot of movies this year.  The only ones I saw were the superhero movies, but I did like them all.

Can I give a best name nomination to Zombie Strippers?  I never heard of that one going to theatres or I probably would have seen it based on the name alone.

I had a rough movie year.  I didn't even see most of the Oscar Noms for best picture.  It's a pretty far cry from the insane number of flicks I saw in 07.  I'll abstain for lack of knowledge this time around.

Dark Knight was probably the best movie I've seen this year.

Incredible Hulk was "Meh,"

I personally didn't like Iron Man.

Wall-E was also pretty good.

Just saw Notorious and I loved it. I'm probably biased though, cause Life After Death was like one of the first CDs I ever bought, and it always reminds me of good times.

I'm usually a bit selective about which movies I watch.  Out of around 20 movies I watched this year, the Top 4 are:

1. WALL-E
2. The Dark Knight
3. Iron Man
4. Milk

In Bruges was definitely the best "comedy" to me this year, altho Tropic Thunder was surprisingly hilarious as well.  The Dark Knight was very good, and it's tough not to call it the best movie, but there is some tough competition.  Slumdog Millionaire was terrific, Gran Torino was vintage Eastwood, The Wrestler was very well-done too.  RockNRolla was pretty awesome and about what you'd expect from Guy Ritchie, and I found myself really wanting to see the next one by the end.  Wall-E was great of course.  I didn't see Milk but I will have to put it on my list.  Haven't seen Benjamin Button either, but is on the to-watch list currently.

Worst movie?  It would seem like there would be a lot of competition, since I've seen quite a few movies this year.  However, Jumper takes it EASILY.  God that was bad.

I saw it free (a friend had passes to a local screening) and it was STILL by far the worst movie I've ever paid to see.

Whenever we do these threads I look over all of the movies made during the year and realize how few movies I actually want to see. My top 4 were all really good, everything else in the middle was ok, and the last 3 were really bad (with the last one being one of the worst movies I've ever seen). Here's what I actually saw this year, in order from best to worst (* if I saw it at the theatre):

The Dark Knight*
Quantum of Solace*
Planet B-Boy*
Slumdog Millionaire*
Sex and the City*
Harold & Kumar 2: Escape From Guantanamo Bay
Cloverfield*
Iron Man
In Bruges
Pineapple Express*
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull*

Movies from the list I'd be interested in checking out:
Kung Fu Hip-Hop
Full Battle Rattle
Traitor

I thought a lot of 2008's movies were real shitters.

I was looking forward to Sex in the City. Shitter.

I didn't like In Bruges or Tropic Thunder. I'm not sure if it was because they were hyped up so much before I saw them or what. I definitely expected more from both. I almost couldn't finish Tropic Thunder.

Dark Knight was really good.

After watching Dark Knight, Brennen Cook and myself snuck in to see Harold and Kumar. It was me, him and two other peeps in the theater. One was a 20ish year old woman by herself and the other was an older woman who had to be at least 80. Her presence alone made the movie fucking fantastic. And the old bea didn't leave or anything. I thought for sure when they were having the bottomless party and all that bush was about that she would surely get up and leave. Nope. She stayed the whole fucking time. Hilarious.

Role Models, Forgetting Sarah Marshal and Zack and Miri Make a Porno all made me laugh. I actually like Role Models a lot.

Iron Man was ok. Again, I think the hype might have left my expectations too high.

The Pineapple Express was ok. I love weed humor, so I'm biased.

Burn After Reading was meh.

I still want to see 21, The Incredible Hulk, Get Smart, Gonzo, Choke, Religulous, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Quantum of Solace
Zack and Miri Make a Porno
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

And I need to see In Bruges, the Wrestler, Milk, and Gran Torino.

I thought 2008 was the worst year in ages for good movies. It sucked, it was full of Hollywood bs, and the quality was bad.

The only films I liked were

The Dark Knight ( Maybe on of the best in years, Heath ledgers acting was phenomenal)

big gap

Wall-E
In Bruges.

No particular order.

The Dark Knight
Chocolate (from guys who did Ong-Bak, coming out here later this year. Fight scenes are SO AMAZING)
Frost/Nixon
Gran Torino
In Bruges
Boku no kanojo wa saibôgu (Cyborg She)
WALL-E
Man on Wire
The Bank Job
Futurama - Bender's Game

Other than that... Slumdog Millionaire, Taken (Was out everywhere else a year ago, good movie, recommend it), Iron Man, Bolt and Kung-Fu Panda were all solid.

Haven't seen The Wrestler, though heard good things.

Granted, I may not be as avant-garde as most of you fuckers, but that slumdog millionaire movie just sucked serious balls.  I can guarantee its more I hate the director then the actual movie.  I hated trainspotting, I hated the beach. 28 days later was just decent, I actually enjoyed the sequel far more.

Several other movies I caught on-demand that made me feel like I wasted time:

Forgetting sarah marshall (the only good part was the topless mila kunis picture, and that shit was probably fake)

Indiana jones 4 was pretty horrible.  George lucas can't seem to leave perfection alone, he goes and fucks up the star wars franchise, now he ruined indiana jones.

88 minutes:predictable "thriller" movie kind of a snoozer

The Happening:another danny boyle thing.  I think everything shaymalananananana  has ever made is pretty awful, but this is the only movie of his I haven't had to just stop watching.  Something about his directing style, he tries too hard to  be Terrence Malick and he falls seriously short.

Tropic Thunder seems to be a movie that is hit or miss with people, the humor in that movie is just something I get and find hilarious.  This is probably another director thing, cable guy/zoolander both had similar issues with people, some just didn't get the humor.

I'm going to go pick up in bruges today, the premise seems like something I would  enjoy.

The Dark Knight all the way. Best movie of 2008, seen it 9 times so far.

I am very disapointed that it wasn't nominated for Best Picture. Also a little dispointed that Heath is nominated for the Oscar and the Golden Globes for Best Supporting Actor. Did these people even watch this movie? Joker carried the entire 2 and a half hours! SMH

I also really liked The Incredible Hulk more then Iron Man.

Agree that it was slim pickings this year.

I agree with a lot of peoples assessments of most things, however i thought the dark knight was over rated <ducks, and puts on flame proof suit> don't get me wrong it was entertaining and i enjoyed it, but all the people going OMG Bestus movi evar!!!! are ridiculous, it seriously wasn't strong through out the whole thing and i don't think it is going to age that well. I liked the first one better.

This movie was hilarious! It is one of those "snakes on a plane" things where the title is exactly what you get. It was equal parts zombie and stripper and zombie stripper with a good dose of comedy. It sort of drags on after the first 30 minutes, cause essentially this is just a premise dragged out and repeated for a feature length amount of times. But for what it was, awesome.
Bonus points for it go to having Tito Ortiz in a cameo of him being really cowardly.

Truth.  The third act was quite weak and felt really rushed.  I feel like the two-face bit really should've been saved for the third movie.  If The Dark Knight ended earlier, it would've been a much better movie.

So Zombie Strippers is actually enjoyable?  A friend downloaded it and put a copy on my hard drive, but I couldn't bring myself to watch it.  Wasn't sure if I could trust it.

I actually thought Aaron Eckhart (twoface guy) was actually the dude with the most screentime/plot time. More than Bale/Batman.

Heath's performance was clearly amazing (and lived up to the hype), but I'm not the biggest batman afficionado.

Thank you.  This was a slim year and Dark Knight was less than spectacular, actual less than pretty good.  The pacing was far to slow and the best parts of the movie where far apart.  Hands down Heath Ledger was fantastic (R.I.P.).  But the rest, subpar.  And that is sad to me being my favorite D.C stories.  Being that Beginnings was quit good and this one had much potential to be great.  I do think it is still worth seeing, just know where it really stands. (at least from this prospective)

I have some of these yet to see, Eagle eye and Tropic Thunder, I'll have to netflix them.  It was as slim year for great movies but I thought there was some fun ones and a few better.  I can't remember all them, off my head I liked, no order.

Penelope
Hortan hears a Who
Postal
Gonzo
the Happening
Wall-E

      Super Hero in order
Iron Man - I am not even much of a iron man fan but this movie was done well
Incredible Hulk  - this is one of my favorites and it was done well, really liked it but... I thought there where holes.
Handcock  - Not bad. not best but not bad.  Some aspects were really cool.
Dark Knight

Later,
Dr.KnowMaD

Yeah, I have saprolings, I mean offspring, and Jumper wasn't that bad.

I wouldn't go that far, but it was definitely more "enh" than all this hype is making it out to be. My entire group of friends, including some very serious movie buffs, was in agreement that it was merely okay.

Insanity! That movie was hysterical AND good.

From the list Steve linked, these are what I've seen, either in the theater or from Netflix, from best to worst:

Frost/Nixon
The Dark Knight
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
WALL-E
Burn After Reading
Iron Man
Definitely, Maybe
Tropic Thunder
Kung Fu Panda
---------------^Excellent^ v Acceptable v BREAK POINT-------------------
Pineapple Express
Meet Bill
27 Dresses
Slumdog Millionaire
Step Brothers
Quantum of Solace
Hancock
Jumper
--------------v "I want my two hours back" v BREAK POINT--------------------
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Revolutionary Road
In the Name of the King (not in theaters, part of a "bad movie night")
Mamma Mia!
The Happening - #1 WORST of 2008

I still want to see: In Bruges, The Other Boleyn Girl, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Rachel Getting Married, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Role Models, Milk, Doubt, The Wrestler

I don't think I can emphasize my hatred of The Happening enough. I've heard some people like it. These people make no sense to me. Allegory my ass, that movie was a train wreck of plot, acting, and writing on an epic scale.
