I was just thinking that this might be a cool land.

-Land-

Tap: add  {1} to your mana pool. Put a charge counter on -land-.

Tap, remove a charge counter: add {2} to your mana pool.

I love mana acceleration, and this is a land I might play. It could be made into a cycle by making the second ability add  {1} {W}, etc. instead of  {2}. It could also be a cycle of duals by adding two different colors with the second ability.

I think this is too good.  It lets you jump up the curve for free in a lot of respects; there isn't really a drawback to negate the acceleration.  Really, the only drawback is "sometimes it's just a regular land."

I would have one ability that produces a variable amount of mana based on whether a counter is on it or not.  At least that way sometimes you'll get 2 mana when you only need 1 and you'll take burn.

Perhaps if the second ability was remove all charge counters so it only produced more than one mana every other turn? Granted that would make it almost unplayable, but if it was a dual it would still be a reasonably high pick in draft.

This would definitely still be playable as "remove all charge counters."  You can use this to make a 2-drop and then make a 4-drop the next turn.  That sounds pretty damn good to me.

I like that this creates situations where you want to tap it and mana burn at the end of your opponent's turn just to get a charge counter on it.  (Although that subtlety might be lost if the rumors about removing mana burn from the rules are true.)

Alternately, borrowing from the Coldsnap storage lands, maybe this could say "Tap, Remove X counters: Add {X} to your mana pool."  I'm not sure if it could still have the "Tap: Add {1} and a counter" ability, but I don't think it would be too outrageously strong.  It would take 3 turns before you could tap it for any acceleration.

You could also just seperate the 2 abilities. Tap for 1 or tap to add a counter. It becomes a sort of Coalition Relic for colorless mana.

Then you can decide if you allow only one or more counters to be removed at a time.

I would see it as that:

-Land-

Tap: add  {1} to your mana pool. Tap: Put a charge counter on -land-.

Tap, remove a charge counter: add {2} to your mana pool.

Trick is, that would make it a really bad storage land. I'm not sure that card would even make it into my Limited decks.

Depends on the use. Storage lands (assuming we are talking of the Ravnica ones) require more mana investment and don't create accel in earlry game.

Turn 1: Tap for counter (1)
Turn 2: Tap for counter (2)
Turn 3: Tap for 2 for a possible 4 mana
Turn 4: Tap for 2 for a possible 5 mana

All that leaving you with your other lands to do stuff. Not all that great bu potent.

I really like the first design actually, I don't think its TOO good, but there could be some drawback, probably like limiting the number of counters it can have to 1 or 2 or dealing 1 damage when the second ability is used, making it a less agressive Ancient Tomb.

The Time Spiral storage lands saw a lot of Standard play. This would too.

Possibly, 1, Tap: remove any number of storage counters, add {2} for each one.

Lands that tap for multiple mana are really good.  This would be a little less good, but still much better than Temple of the False God in most cases.

If this land was to be printed, I would pick up my old coretapper deck with jitte and chalices.
