1st - sorry if this is the wrong forum - I'm new.

On to it then ...

As a player contemplating a return to magic, and one who would only play Vintage (or type 1 as I remember it), I'm curious what the vintage tournament scene is like. Specifically, what caliber of players do you guys generally meet, what ages generally play vintage (I admittedly would rather not spend most of my time gaming with 14 yr olds, and assume most of the members here are much older), where are the best cities to play magic, and are there enough serious type 1 events to keep a guy playing competitively all year?

I'm about to move back to NYC this fall. I hope there is a decent place for serious gamers to play there, although I'm only familiar with a couple Warhammer shops. Judging from this board, it seems like Boston is "The Place" for Type 1 magic tourneys.

Any input or general comments anybody would like to add are most welcome. I'm sure I left out a number of smaller issues, but you get the idea from the vagueness of my post.

Thanks all!

You can find basically any kind of game at neutral ground, probably the best place to hang out I've ever played.  The vintage scene is definitely older, mostly college age or up, a lot of grad students and lawyers.  Not sure what the deal with the lawyers is.

NYC isn't a bad spot to live for vintage, if you have access to a car (Zip Cars is awesome).  You can hit most tournaments with a 2-3 hour drive.

Not sure what the deal with the lawyers is.

Magic is very logically satisfying. Unlike reality. Even lawyers need a break. ^^

1.  Moved to Community.  Check out the site rules here

2.  I think you're well-positioned to get to regular events in Massachusetts (particularly the events in Western Mass, see the Hadley tournament announcement for more details) and in Pennsylvania without too much trouble.

3.  I heard a rumor about Neutral Ground going out of business.  I don't know if it's accurate or not.

4.  I need a break.  :-/

In my experience, my opponents come from all walks of life.

You really can't judge your opponent by looking at them.

That being said, many many of my NorCal opponents are amonst the best players in the field (though we all have faults).

I have been responsible for importing <18year old players into the meta, and after a few years, they finally get to wrangle with the big boys.

The atmosphere is definately casual, but often very serious.  Not dick serious, but "we play by the rules" serious.  If a misscommunication happens, both players will usually agree to back things up 10 seconds and get the playstate correct, getting a judge involved if neccessary.

Rarely have my opponents been annoying, jerks, or rules lawyers (beyond the normal parameters of Magic Has Rules)

Neutral Ground has closed. I'm also aware of no Vintage scene in NYC to my knowledge. That being said, if there was an effort to start one, I would be thrilled.

WHAT!?!?  NOOOOOO!!!!!  That makes going to columbia for grad school a bit worse...then again I'm not sure I'd have any time anyway in the event I manage to get in.
