Ugh...only 1 person showed up besides myself. Tournament was cancelled. Does anyone have any tips on how to throw a good tournament in the future? I know that Des Moines has vintage players but constructed tournaments in general have a hard time getting off the ground here. It's mostly a drafting city I guess.
To be honest, when I lived in Des Moines, there just wasn't much vintage after asking around at some FNMs in Ames and WDM. I had multiple decks with me that I loaned out which generated some interest. (these were outdated decks to, even for their time). A small crowd built up to watch some casual games between myself and Scott, one of the Mayhem owners. People seemed to be very interested in decks that were so powerful they could have 3 2/1s dropped turn one followed by a turn 2 pyrostatic pillar, and then lose to being comboed out turn two right through it.
Proxy up a bunch of decks and loan them out at FMNs. They regularly got excellent turnouts (20+). The regulars there are willing to try out any format that's fun. I remeber 5 color highlander had caught on pretty well, for example.
It will take a bit of work, but it can certainly be done. Had I lived in Des Moines for a bit longer, I may have suceeded already by doing the same thing.
Good luck.
