Having not paid much attention to Vintage for a long time prior to September of last year, I had started to make summer plans to attend GenCon this year...until, of course, I learned that the Championships had been moved last year.  After about a half-hour of googling and forum-browsing, I started to see some rumors that the 2009 Championships would again be taking place in Chicago instead of GenCon.

Is anybody in a position to confirm this?

If it is going to be in Chicago again, can anybody attest to how worthwhile it was last year?  Chicago seems like a great city, but the event only lasts a single day.  GenCon was a blast last time I went, and the fact that it ran for multiple days and had many other events made the long trip worth it for me.

Yah and if it's only one day TMD should consider running an additional tourney the day before or after.

Last year though it coincided with Nationals, which I'm pretty sure is a two day event with all kinds of side tournaments going on all weekend. I'm assuming that's the case this year as well.

Still not as exciting as GenCon, but might be worthy of the trip.

I believe vintage champs will be at gencon this year, for reasons I've already stated many times elsewhere (that i'm not gonna repeat).

I had done a search on TMD as well before I created this thread, and although you do comment on it, this is the only thing that I saw:

At the very least, there will be the Vintage Championship at Gencon, as they have three more paintings to give away!   That alone refutes the notion that Vintage - and competitive Vintage tournaments -- will cease to exist in two years.

Technically it's not at Gencon anymore =p

It's not? Or are you confusing the fact that the Vintage Champs was at US Nat's this year to celebrate Magic's 15th Anniversary?  The home for the Vintage Champs is Gencon.  This year was an exception to that rule.

I'm not trying to use an accusatory tone, just that I searched again after your post and still found nothing more.  I don't expect you to feel obligated to rewrite your reasons, but this was the only one I was able to find.  Are you certain that that was WOTC's explanation for why it had moved?

Here is what I was told:

Wizards wanted to take one of the Eternal Championships to celebrate Magic's 15th Anniversary.   They asked Pastimes which they'd rather keep for Gencon, and Pastimes told them they wanted Legacy.    Thus, Vintage Champs ended up at US nats last year.

That sounds reasonable.  Hopefully they stick to it; as much as I would like to see Chicago, I'd prefer the Gen Con event.

Here's confirmation from today's Justice League article by James Elliott on SCG:

Quote
I’ve been authorized to say that the Vintage and Legacy Championships WILL be back at GenCon this year, after the temporary move of the Vintage Champs to U.S. Nationals last year.

I believe it was the third day last time I went, but that was in 2004.  I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't put it on the first or final day.  That means it would probably be on Aug. 14 or 15 (Fri or Sat).

On what days do they usually hold the tournament?

Legacy Champs - Friday
Vintage Champs - Saturday

Generally there are a few events on the days leading up to Champs as well. At least one offering a two round bye in the Champs event to the winner. They run an event on Sunday as well but turnout for that one tends to be much lower as its the last day of GenCon.

I don't know how official this is, but someone created a search function for events happening at Gen Con.  Here is what I saw there:

MTG Vintage Championship
   6+   some   $24.00
   Fri 11:00 am - 1:00 pm (TCG0905629)

MTG Vintage Prelim
   6+   some   $18.00
   Thu 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm (TCG0905626)

Not surprisingly, lots of other Magic stuff going on as well like the Legacy Championship.

According the GenCon site Diakonov linked to it will be Mox Emerald.
