All right,

Here we GO! I am going to be hosting a first (hopefully of many) Vintage event in NYC at Jim Hanley's Universe near Herald Square.

Come ONE, Come ALL to this event and put New York City back on the Magic Map in a BIG way!

Here are the details:

Given 8-24 people I think 4 rounds + a cut to top 4 should be appropriate. However, if we have less than 8 we might need to re-organize the structure a bit so it is important for me to get a head count ASAP in order to determine how best to announce the tourament.

In general (unless this grows out of hand in popularity and numbers) I think I'd like to keep these touramemts under 5 hours so a strict 50 minute rounds rule will be applied.

When?

Saturday, May 30th, 2009
Begins promptly at 6:00 PM but meet at 5:30 to register + make/receive proxies + pay entry + meet and greet. Please, PLEASE be on time or, IF you think you'll be late then drop me a Cell message (845-705-4164) and tell me!

Where?
Jim Hanley's Universe
4 W33rd st., between 5/6 avenue
New York, NY

(short walk from Penn station and right next to Herald Square, shouldn't be hard to find, but call me if you need directions)

Tournament Format
Unsanctioned Vintage (Type 1) with up to 15 proxies permitted (must be on a card and with Sharpie so it won't run or add thickness. All cards must also be in sleeves. Please try to make/bring your own proxies. I will try to make some extras for the event, but I may not have enough for everyone)
Entry Fee: $15
4 rounds of Swiss/ cut to top 4
Prizes (based entirely on attendance)
With 10 people the prize structure would look like this:
1rst - $55
2nd - $25
3rd/4th - $10 each

PM with questions or concerns. Otherwise, I'll see you on Saturday as we collectively Commandeer NYC without pitching two blue cards!

Edit: All right guys. Had to change the date again. Hope this time works for some people.

I intend to be at this event.

I'm not sure if the store will ask for a cut of the money (they shouldn't if it is unsanctioned right? Especially for the first even I'd think) but I fully intend to have 100% of the buy-in go towards the prize money.

This term is unclear? I can see the first event being free, but if we start chewing up table space without the players providing any other income, I see this as being a problem in the future. Rent is NOT cheap in Manhattan. But, it's the first week, so I'm not too concerned.

Awesome that this is happening.

Also, there is no way a 6 round event (assuming 4 rounds plus cut to top 4) will stay under 5 hours. I would be shocked it if stayed under 6 and a half, with 50 minute rounds. My general rule of thumb is 1 hour and 10 minutes for every 50 minute round. Something always comes up to stall things. Always. Now, how that changes the tournament structure, if at all, I don't know, but that's how I see it.

Thanks for the advice. I should be able to stay til 5 so if we start on time it might work out, but I'll bear that in mind and perhaps push the start time back to 10:30 in the announcement.

Please spread the word and invite your friends. I'd like to get at least 8 folks there for this thing and I hope it gets bigger every week.

Aight guys. The store owner said that this weekend was too short notice for them. I will talk to him tomorrow about a tournament for the 30th (I purposely did it for that day as I know that does not conflict with TMC open which I will not be able to attend Sad). Anyway, tell me ASAP if this day + time will work for you and get back to me with how many (between you and your friends) people you expect to bring. If it's just yourself that's fine too.

I expect to be at the event on the 30th, assuming work doesn't interfere, which is a possibility. Not bringing anybody other than myself.

Hey guys. So it's officially a go with the store, but I would like to warn people that there will be a $5/person sitting fee from the store (I wish it wasn't the case but alas I want everyone to be prepared for that.) In order to make the prize-support halfway decent would people be opposed to upping the entry fee to $15?

And guys, from the sound of it, they'd like this to happen regularly, but, obviously they will be more incentivized to do so if people show up. So please try to make it if you can and bring friends. I should have at least 1 additional deck that can be played easily on 15 proxies. Bring all your Vintage decks and friends. The Vintage community in NYC could really use a shot in the arm and I can't do it alone. Hope to see you all there on the 30th!

No Response? Can I get some yays/nays via this thread or PM? I know people are excited about the possibility of NYC Vintage, but I need to get a better idea of how many people will actually show for this first event. This first event will be key as it will allow me a chance to meet up with you all and set up future plans for the event in person.

Josh? Roland? Others?

Please get back to me ASAP.

Thanks guys,

Noah

Depending on Attendance and time constraints would people be willing to either:

a). Go to a cut to T2 instead of T4 for this tournament?
b). Make it a round robin style event?
c). Play 4 rounds and just go on record?

I mean, I like the idea of cut to T4 because it really shouldn't leave any 3-1s out of the final competition but obviously time constraints are time constraints and I want these tournaments to fit in a more casual window of time as Roland has recommended to me. Thoughts?

a) no
b) yes
c) no

We'll just see what we have when we get there.

I say we see how many people show up. I prefer round robin if few people are there, but others might just want to do something like Swiss +1. So let's go with the flow.

Wait, when did the event time change to 6 pm?

You can't keep changing things. Sad It completely destabilizes everything.

Also, the store closes at 11 pm. We probably won't even be able to finish if even a few people show up. That's five rounds tops, if we're lucky. Why the change to 6 pm? Why wasn't there a post announcing this change rather than just having an edit?

I have tried to go along with this, but all these changes are making it really, really hard, and I imagine I'm not the only one. We need, set in stone, at least one week in advance:

1) Date
2) Time
3) Cost
4) Prize Structure
5) Location
6) Proxy Limit

Event details can't be changed like this all the time. This has to be something like the sixth or seventh change ever since the first announcement about the first event a few weeks ago. I don't think I'm being picky here. This is just never going to get off the ground if this continues.  Talk to the store, figure out the details, and stick to them.

I'm not trying to be a jerk; I want this to happen as much as anybody. I just don't think it will if plans are not made and adhered to in some fashion. People cannot attend events if the details are in a constant state of flux. People have classes, jobs, families, and lives.

Edit: I've actually decided I'm going to stay home and watch the hockey game or go out with friends this weekend, instead. Another person I have spoken to has expressed he isn't going because of the time change. I'll be glad to attend an event next week that starts some time before 1 pm and that doesn't have details changed extensively before the event. Sorry to throw the hammer down, but somebody had to do it.

I understand your concerns, but the time was changed a week ago when people told me that the earlier time would be a problem. I'm simply trying to be accommodating to as many people as possible, and set something in stone as early as possible. I figured a week would be good enough, but if people aren't checking the announcement frequently I can see how they'd see the open post and not check in every once in so often. I apologize for that.

Since this is the first event and I'm trying to get as many people as possible to attend I needed to be more flexible. Once the ball is rolling I'm sure I'll try to set things more in stone.

10 people at this event. Had a great time despite scrubbing hard. I'd definitely go to more of these events if we can have weekly events. I know there was talk of another one next Sunday, here's hoping to this becoming a regular event and putting NYC/LI on the map for another Vintage scene.

Any further info on how this event went?

Next event?

Glad that ten showed up. That's a pretty good showing for the first event.
