http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_hearts

Complex hearts, that uses complex numbers for scores.  Weird/neat!

Complex numbers are a + bi where a and b are real numbers and i is the square root of -1, typically one sees this during Algebra II.

My friend Ian and I deveolped a 2 player version of hearts that involved each trick being 2 plays by each player (say, I get 2 of clubs. I play it, Ian plays something else, then I play a card, then he plays a card.  That is first trick. No hearts or queen of spades on the first trick.  Also, we dealth 3 stacks of cards of 17 each plus 1 extra.  Whoever won the first trick got the 52nd card.  the 17 extra cards were just left in limbo, so who knows if we could Shoot The Moon or not. We often played to 300 cuz we were like that.  The strategies were fairly different

Also, we made a 3 player varient where each player was dealth 17 cards (17x3=51) and no hearts or queen of spades were allowed on first turn.  BUT, whoever won the first trick got the random 52nd card, deal with it!

I've never played any differently, regardless of number of players. If there were four, then obviously it would be an even 13 to each player, but I would often play with 5 (10 cards each, remainder 2) or even 6 (8 cards each, remainder 4!) people and the remaining cards would go to the winner of the first. I know it's typically a 4 player game, but until now, I always thought the the remaining cards going to the first trick was part of the rules.

I never read the official rules for other than 4 players (and then, not even for 4 players).
