We have recently concluded the 5-31-09 BCI Vintage Tournament.

Props:
To BCI for letting us use the venue again and the scrumptious Sisig Rice + Adobo flakes combo!.
To Thons for coordinating with BCI for me.
To Resley for helping and staying until the tournament is over.
To Andrew for donating 2 life counters as random prizes.
To the players who continues to support the Vintage format.

Slops:
Me for going back and forth to V-Mall to buy some stuff. Been awhile since I last organized a tournament so I keep forgetting what the SOP's are (decklists, table numbers, boosters).
For raining very hard and me wearing slippers going thru puddles of cold water. Yuck.
For not having a judge present thus cannot play. Booo.

Next tournament is scheduled sometime in July. 3rd week hopefully if schedule permits.

Played the 4th placing ANT deck

Some highlights(mostly slops) of my game last Sunday

Round 1 Vs Painters

Game 2 First turn Necropotence fetching 8 lands, 1 Mana Crypt and Brainstorm. Wow... I mean wow for a necro fetch. Good thing I was able to Brainstorm into Demonic Consultation into a Tendrils of Agony. My initial hand had enough juice to cook up a storm.

Round 2 Vs Tez

Game 2 With Remora on play on his end, i attempted Ad Nauseam after a bunch of spells and a bunch of free cards on his hand(I'd say around 8-10 cards) through Remora. What was fascinating here is that he was not able to get that FOW or Mana Drain after all those Remoras. Was able to storm him to 18 and finished him off with another Tendrils that was fetched through a Trinisphere hampered Vampiric Tutor two turns later. Had to Duress(cost B2) him the following turn.

Round 3 Vs Painters

Game 1 I play Ad Nauseam, he counters, I PoN, he counters, I PoN and for the third time he counters. Crap! I die my next turn via PoN

Round 4 Vs Bob Long

Game 1 Long game with Bobs pinching me for two for several turns. Was able to Ad Nauseam storm but short by 2 life to finish him. Along the storm lines, i had to chain two Pact of Negations for extra spells. Next turn he Hurkyl's Recall all my mana artifacts. I untapped my three lands next turn with JB shuffling and goes JB: "chingy, patay ka na. Yung PoN mo(Your PoN... you're dead) "  :blackeye:

Game 2 He twists and turns, plays a gazillion spells. He Duresses me. I refused, played PoN again protecting a lethal Tendrils. He Ponders and he gets... Hurkyl's Recall. He plays it on my mana artifacts and passes (what! No Tendrils). And like a dushbag dies a terrible death by PoN again

Round 5 Vs Fish

Game 1 Getting beat up by his troops means i need to do something. So i did another PoN on one of his spells hoping that Timetwister can get me up to UU3 the following turn. It never did and again... nevermind!

PoN... hmmmmm! I lost a ton of games with that cursed card. Played too aggressive control on that day.

I played Audrey's Storm ( GWSx) and went 8-0-1 for the whole tournament

Some highlights/notes I took during the tournament

Round 1: Raymund Napao with Dragon Stompy (2-1)
G1: Bob goes all the way
G2: I get beat down by his Magus of the Moon and Simian Spirit Guides. Chalice of the Void resolved at 0 and 1
G3: On the play I hit him with Duress taking his only threat of Thorn of Amethyst and I cast  Bob with jet and emerald. This allowed me to create card advantage with Bob and at the same time set up a win via tendrils

Round 2: Kim with Naya Aggro (2-0)
G1: He gets to play early beats on me but none of which are threats for me to storm out. Tendrils seals the game,I storm out for 10
G2: Turn 1 Bob and 2nd turn Empty the Warrens for 16 (8 spells) seals the game

Round 3: Ryan Payabyab with Tez / Oath SB (2-0)
G1: On the play I duress Ryan revealing: Polluted Delta, Demonic Tutor, Ancestral Recall, Mana Crypt, Mox Pearl, Tropical Island and Mox Sapphire. I take Ancestral Recall. A turn 2 Bob helps me lessen his life and helped me generate enough spells to tendrils away.
G2: On the draw I resolve Bob and ride him for that lethal tendrils

Round 4: Ching Parungao with TX ANT (2-0)
G1: All I could remember is that on his turn he plays Pact of Negation to add up the spell count for his tendrils that brings me down t0 3 with Tolarian Academy, Underground Sea, Island, Mana Crypt, Black Lotus and Chrome Mox on the board. On my turn I reveal mana vault via Bob and I draw into a random card. Now I cast brainstorm which gave me 2 lands and a rebuild. I return the 2 lands and cast rebuild. Ching is now left with only Tolarian Academy, Underground Sea and an Island which won't help him pay for the pact of negation.
G2: Like what Ching wrote. I cast Timetwister and play a lot of spells then cast duress to see if he had counters for a possible lethal tendrils. He responds and casts Pact of Negation which I let resolve. Then I proceed to using Ponder, trying to get out a Tendrils of Agony. Ponder revealed Brainstorm, Mystical Tutor and Hurkyl's Recall. I get the recall and return all his artifact mana and pass the turn. Pact of Negation kills him again!

Round 5: Marko Trono with BANT fish (2-0)
G1 and 2: Can't remember much from this but all I could recall is that in both games, I end of turn bounced his Meddling Mage and go Tendrils on my turn

Round 6: Vincent Ching with Oath
We decide to ID into the top 8

Top 8: JM Crisostomo with Ichorid (2-1)
G1: Zombie beat down!
G2: On the play I open with Polluted Delta into Underground Sea into Duress revealing 2 Chalice of the void , 2 Ancient Grudge, Bridge from Below, Unmask and Bazaar, I take Unmask then proceed to dropping Bob via Mox Jet and Mox Ruby.He Doesn't recover from this as I set up a lethal Tendrils with the help of Bob
G3: On the play JM mulls to 6 and plays Bazaar and casts 2 Unmask and hits my hand of Mystical Tutor, Timetwister, Wheel of Fortune, Duress Polluted Delta, Island and Mox Jet. He takes Mystical and Timetwsiter. On my turn i play my island and Mox Jet to hit his Ancient Grudge and I pass. On his turn he plays brass and hits my Jet and passes his turn. I Draw into a mox sapphire and use it to help me play out Wheel of Fortune into a lethal Tendrils of Agony!

Top 4: Ching Parungao with TX ANT(2-0)
G1: I beat him down with Bob to 14 life. On his turn he casts Ad Nauseum and dies to it.
G2: He plays island into ponder and passes. I have an insane opening hand of 2 Dark Rituals, Black Lotus, Tendrils of Agony, Mox Jet, Ancestral Recall and Hurkyl's Recall. On the draw I get another Dark Ritual. I open up with Mox Jet and casting the 3 rituals, playing Lotus into Ancestral Recall which revealed mana crypt and 2 other spells.  Then I cast Hurkyl's Recall targeting myself then replayed Mox Jet and Mana Crypt to Storm up for 11. Sweet!

Finals:  Vincent Ching with Oath
I asked Vince if he wanted to play the finals out but we were both exhausted from the long day. Vince and I agreed that he gets to take home the Tropical Island in exchange of the badlands and the win for me. Sweet!

Props:
To Lauren de Jesus for organizing this tournament
To Ching, Jesse, and Resly ( Tito Jigo with the sick dance moves) for play testing with me for the longest time
To Ching, Jesse, David, and Lauren for lending me cards
To Ching for the brokeback ride home!
To all the players who participated!

Congrats to the top8!
I'm so glad to see that storm decks are still represented in the top8 amidst this "Tez dominated era".

Good job Lauren for another successful tourney.
Hopefully my hands won't be tied down to work the next time you hold another one.

@ching:
That is why I'm not an advocate of PoN in ANT.
It's not something that the current meta will allow to shine, IMHO.
It's either you make your list blazingly fast and run PoN, or you give it some resiliency and run discard.
But good job nonetheless!

What were the prizes like? Are there any upcoming tournaments? I would love to play in the Philippines.

Our prizes are nothing big. We don't play for a Mox or a Mana Drain because the entrance would be too high. The top prize is blue dual land. Let me tell you though that we don't care because a whole lot of us here play for sport and we'd rather go for glory. Many too are points-sensitive (we play sanctioned tourneys by the way) because since DCI made the Total points rule to get into Nationals (or PTs, GPs, whatever...), some are going for the points.

Ask Herbig  on how its like as he had played in some of the tourneys before. We only have a yearly event with a big prize and that is at the end of the year which is usually the lower-priced moxen as a prize. We really can't afford to have a $20 tournament monthly.

Its still a lot of fun though.

I was just curious, I am not too concerned about the prizes, to be honest. I would rather travel somewhere new and play in a different country. That is the fun part for me. Thank you for the information.

The community is closely knit and we are always oh so accommodating to new players.
It's not impossible to borrow a card from a complete stranger or an acquaintance.

Be very sure to stay away from dawgie when visiting the men's room though . j/k  Very Happy
