Oh my goodness. I am so very thrilled: this is my favorite format. I'm happy that I have a 2nd forum to go to, and a reason to come back to one of my old haunts (TMD).
My current playgroup in Cambridge, MA has kind of dissolved. This is ok, as I am moving in less than a month to Gainesville, FL. However, I'm almost certainly going to have to introduce players to the format in order to find a playgroup. This will be difficult, as I used to have 11 decks:( lists at
http://forum.dragonhighlander.net/EDH_Forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=123&hilit=+a+tale+of+ten+decks), but have dismantled them in order to up their power level, consolidating them into 5 decks, which are still under construction (Rafiq, Sek'Kuar, Garza Zol, Mayeal, Ertai the Corrupted). The old 11 decks were cool in that the set together were also highlander (so, for example, only my best black deck got Demonic Tutor), so the power was quite dilute, but the decks were very balanced. Providing so many decks was great to introduce others to the format, but now, not having any *complete* decks sucks (though I'll have Rafiq done soon). I'm afraid the power level of that deck is a little too spicy for new players to handle

I've got to dumb a few others down).
Before that, I was in Princeton, NJ, where the playgroup was pretty casual, had a fair amount of aggro and a TON of boardsweep. My Cambridge playgroup is quasi-competitive - a few of the others dip heavily into blue for stack control and has a ton of graveyard recursion. But because there is little red/green or early aggro, there's less sweepers and free for all games take ~3 hours, so we usually only time for one. I'll be happy to leave that metagame behind.
All my metagames have/will be using the official ban list unless we arrive at a consensus on a change (my Cambridge playgroup banned Back to Basics, Blood Moon/Magus of the Moon and any infinite combo). It was also ploddingly political.
I like politics, but not if they are overly tedious.
All of my decks are paper (no MTGO), and all of them are tuned for multiplayer. I've always been a Johnny, but I'm finding myself waxing Spike. I like a metagame with a good balance between casual and competitive, and think the best way to play is to be inclusive as possible and benefit all members of the group to maximize the play experience. Both of my former playgroups routinely had 5-8 players.
