I have been playing Legacy for quite a while, and seeing that I just got a decently paying job, I was debating whether to take the dive and buy a set of power and maybe mana drains, etc...

Anyway, I was wondering what you guys think the risk would be long term for such a purchase. This risk would not be including the possibility of fakes, loss, or somehow destruction of the cards.

Thanks for the input!

The longer the game goes on, the more valuable the cards become as they become older and harder to find. The only "Risk" you have aside from fakes, loss and destruction would be the format dieing making the cards less valuable imo.

I dont really see a risk for the long term.  I used to think that this game would eventually have a decline in its popularity and was always cautious to sell off my power for the greatest return in the event that it would take a turn for the worst. However, after seeing the majority of what the average person buys in terms of singles, I would have to say that there is no way that this is going to end any time soon.  A little clarity, I help maintain the top rated seller on cardshark, and for the most part the stuff people buy are things that are nonexistant on the competitive radar.  I get rather giddy when some one actualy buys a legacy deck, or at least the bulk of it anyway.  The truth is that there is a MASSIVE crowd of people that play magic outside of the stores we are used to seeing, and infact these are the people IMO that keep the game going.

The only REAL threats/risks of buying power, at this moment in time, happen to be as following: THEFT, FAKES and THE LOCAL INTEREST in the format.  If for some reason any of this isnt he answer you were looking for, try asking in a less vague way so I would knwo what you want to know.   Wink Anyway, hope this helped

Yeah, that helped a lot, thanks!

I realized after I posted that it was a pretty vague question.

I think most of my concern comes from the obligation of wizards to honor the reprint policy in the long term, and maybe even the implications of the mtg patent expiring...

This may all be paranoia, but I feel like if the people here don't share my concern, then it's a pretty good barometer of the risk involved in such a purchase.

Now I'll just have to make sure they don't get stolen...

Buy from someone reputable and you should be fine.  The patent only covers the TCG concept; the rest of Magic is copyrighted and trademarked, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Speaking of reputable sources, ^ that guy is about the best you can do when buying higher dollar cards. I would buy from Ben before I would a major name, and thats saying something.
