ANNOUNCEMENT: MEANDECK OPEN – VINTAGE TOURNAMENT
Sunday, January 24, 2010

The Mean Deck Open returns in 2010!    Following the success of our November event, we plan to return in January!

WHAT: VINTAGE! Tournament

Swiss + Top 8.

Entry is $20

We have raised our entry fee from $15 to $20 for several reasons a while ago.  The store owner will put a larger percentage of the entry into the prize pool, AND we want to extend our prize pool to the entire top 8.   We think these two great advantages are worth the downside of having to pay $5 more.

However, unlike other TOs, we will NEVER increase our entry fee.   It's ridiculous to have to pay more and more over time just to have a fun afternoon slinging cards.

PRIZES:

CASH!!!
1st Place: 40% of Prize Pool
2nd Place: 20% of Prize Pool
3rd Place: 10% of Prize Pool
4th Place: 10% of Prize Pool
5th-8th: 5% of prize pool each

However, if there is just a cut to top 4, prize distribution as follows:
1st Place: 50%
2nd Place: 25%
3rd and 4th Place: 12.5%

Prize Pool will be 80% of entry fees!

Minimum $200 guaranteed!

BONUS if we get more than 24 players, a FREE single elimination side event will begin with the final round of swiss with a grand prize of $40 (which will come from the main prize pool).

This bonus side event went so well in November that we'll be doing the same thing again.

PROXIES: UNLIMITED PROXIES will be permitted.  HOWEVER, you must adhere to the Starcitygames Rules for Proxies:

http://forums.starcitygames.com/viewtopic.php?t=291560

ALSO, *** NOTE *** Collector's Edition and International Edition cards will be LEGAL for this tournament

If you intend on running CE or IE cards, you MUST:

1) use completely opaque sleeves, AND
2) Double Sleeve your card OR use a looser fitting sleeves where the cut of the corner of the card is not visible.  Otherwise, you must replace your sleeves before the top 8.

WHEN: Sunday, January 24 2010

The store opens at 11:30 AM. Registration starts at 12:30. Registration will close and the tournament begins at 1PM sharp.

WHERE:

The Soldiery
4256 N. High St.
Columbus, Ohio 43214

If you need to car pool to Columbus, post your needs and we'll find someone whom you can travel with.   I'll start a signup if necessary.

FINALLY, don't miss our post-game chowdown at Thurmans.

Put the address in your GPS so you can get there after the tournament!

http://www.thethurmancafe.com/

Don't miss on eating this:

This tournament will be great fun, good laughs, and amazing times.

Put this event on your calendars.   Make sure to get that Sunday off work!

Our last event was one of the largest Vintage tournaments in years in Columbus.   If we get just five more players, we'll get to play six rounds of swiss!   If we do that, we'll ADD a second bonus side event as well.  Urge your friends to come out.   Bring out those players who haven't shown up in some time.   We'll see you in Columbus!

If finances are a little better in January, then hopefully I will be able to make it, too.  I would love to be able to sling power and try to eat that burger all in one day!  Very Happy

I'm also going to try to get Joe Bushman to return for this event.

I've received alot of questions about rules text on proxies.

SCG Proxy rules (which we've adopted) alllow two proxy methods:

Quote
The first and most basic is taking a basic land card and writing the details of the card on it. The second method is to take a card that shares some of the characteristics with the card that is being proxied and erase any characteristics that do not match, replacing them with the correct characteristics.

I've received questions from people who want to know:

1) whether they have to write out all of the rules text

or

2) whether they can just print out a deck.

We strongly prefer that people do not print out a deck, but if they do, we require that all of their cards have the same thickness.

Vroman has raised an excellent point in the Xtreme Games thread.   Wizards has printed alot of textless cards, and they only seem to be making more.

What do you all think?   Should we allow a certain set of cards to be "textless"?   Personally, I agree with Vroman that I would rather see:

FORCE
OF
WILL

In big bold letters on the face of a land card than see a 'small novel.'

Thoughts?

ZOMG I can post here now, lol
I should be down there with like 4 of the Akron guys.
This should be pretty fun, I so RARELY get to play Vintage.

I'm so used to playing Legacy at the Soldiery, this will feel odd.

This is soooooo much better. One of the methods I used while making proxies was to fill in the card with a colored Sharpie of the card proxied. It would help clear the confusion of having Ancestral Recall on a Plains or Forest by making it Blue. Also, all my moxen would be filled in with the appropriate color and have the name in large print on it.

There's nothing more confusing than looking at someones board and seeing Mox Jet on a Island, Mox Sapphire on a Plains, a tapped Forest with Mana Vault written on it, and a tapped Plains representing Tolarian Academy while Gifts Ungiven is on the Stack.

We have oracle text available, but one concern is that someone might be playing a newer card.   Should we just say: let's look it up?

You can write the Oracle text on the card. I don't think that is the issue. The problem that I have always had was when you'd duress an opponent and their Force of Wills would be on Plains, their Ancestral Recall would be on a Mountain, while their Island and Misdirection would be on Forests.

These are extreme cases, but with new people entering Vintage we should try to make it clear as possible.

For what it's worth, I agree that this is frustrating. In fact, I used to do this on purpose just to make my opponent exert a little more mental energy keeping things straight.

As there are no floor rules pertaining to the use of proxies, I'm curious to know how so. The only conclusion I could reach would be unsporting conduct, but you can't make a concrete ruling because you can't positively determine intent.

So I can print up my deck and just glue them all to my stack of 100 basic lands as long as they are all the same thickness??  That's what I planned on doing originally.  Otherwise the idea of just the name of the card in big bold letters is fine with me, just some of the cards I want to use have TONS of text and my handwriting is somwhere between a retarded monkey and chicken with it's head cut off.  Very Happy
