I couldn't make it to this one, but I started this thread because: A - I want to know and B - Not all TMDrs can start new threads in this forum (though all are able to reply).

So what went down?

Sadly, I couldn't attend either! With Eudo canceling their tourneys I've been vintage deprived.

Congtats to whoever won. I'm sure the top cards were Jace and loadstone Wink

There were 18 players for 5 rounds with a cut to top 8.  I don't know if there was a single Lodestone Golem in attendance... the field was like 50% ochoa.dec (Trygon Tezz), with some Fish, dredge, storm, goblins, and jund.  I played a UR deck similar to this list, but with vault-key and lots of sweet random cards.  The first place Emerald was in poor condition, so we split the store credit in the semis:

Brett Allen - UR Remora/Jace
Eric Campusano - BUG Fish
Charles Gordon - Sower Jacerator
?? - Dredge Ryan Devine - Trygon Jacerator

Hopefully top 8 lists will be posted at some point.

I went 4-0 in the swiss against various flavors of Tezz which are all a blur.  This game was pretty memorable, though:

Opponent turn 1: Land, Mox, Dark Confidant
My turn 1: Ruby, Lightning Bolt the Confidant, Strip Mine his land
Opponent turn 2: Land, Mox, Time Vault, Voltaic Key
My turn 2: rrrrip Lotus, play Land, Lotus, Gorilla Shaman, eat Key, eat Mox, beat for 20

Had it, etc.

In the top 8 I played against Zach with TPS and had a pretty sweet opener:

My turn 1: Island, Mystic Remora (opponent Forces), Pearl, Lotus, Tinker into Inkwell, Relic of Progenitus
I attack him down to 4, then his Bob reveals Tendrils.

Game 2 he has a nice one:

Opponent turn 1: Land, Mox, Cabal Ritual, Necropotence
My turn 1: Remora

My opponent slow-draws with Necro and makes land drops until my I can't pay for Remora on turn 4.  I'm pretty sure it's over when he casts Tendrils for 10 life and Time Walk in the same turn with Necro out.  Somehow I survive that despite having only Relic and Spell Pierce as disruption, though I'm on the verge of dying to my own Mana Crypt.  I Merchant Scroll for Mindbreak Trap, and after much agonizing he decides he has to Necro down to 2 life.  I have the Lightning Bolt.

I'm the mystery player in your top 4 list, and I certainly was not playing dredge, I was playing a 4-jace version of trygon/jace.

Mini-report:

Round 1: somebody with dredge

Game 1: He does his dredge thing.

Game 2: I get an early Yixlid Jailer and he just scoops because he has no creature removal.

Game 3: I did not mulligan a hand with a top and no hate, and did not draw any hate, and lost.

Round 2: Philip Yam with noble fish

Game 1: He totally skunks me. I think I had no lands at the end?

Game 2: He mis-identifies my deck as being some kind of storm deck and has sideboarded in Ethersworn Canonist. Also he gets mana-screwed, and my sowers plus inkwell get there.

Game 3: See game 2.

Round 3: A really cool guy whose name I don't remember, with goblins

Game 1: I get a speedy inkwell and win.

Game 2: I let him Earwig Squad me since I have inkwell, tinker, and sower in my hand, with Jace in play. He removes lotus, yawg will, and time vault. I sower his squad and then jace my inkwell back in and tinker it out.

Round 4: Brett Allen

Game 1: He does an Empty for 10 goblins and his Library of Alexandria has given him one counterspell more than my ancestral, so my vault-key attempt is foiled.

Game 2: He has a really, really sick hand with fow for my turn 1 confidant and then lotus, ancestral, Thada Adel Aquisitor, which goes the distance.

Round 5: Another really nice guy with noble fish

Game 1: Jace + Inkwell get there.

Game 2: I screw up and kill myself with Bob.

Game 3: Sowers + Jace get there.

Top 8: Another new player with dredge.

Game 1: The usual.

Game 2: I open lotus, land, demonic tutor and have turn 1 yixlid, turn 2 protection + ravenous trap.

Game 3: He mulligans to 2(!) and has turn 1 Chalice for 0, which is sick since my opener has a mox and two crypts. Fortunately, I get out a top and draw into jailer and two ravenous traps before he gets bazaar online.

At this time, Eric Campusano and Brett Allen approach me suggesting a four-way split, which I am pretty happy about.

Props:
Jace.
All the new players for coming out! Glad to see you guys. Hopefully the next one will be bigger and better, this one had a small turnout.

Slops:
My mulligan decisions.
Tormod's Crypt - maybe I should take 1 out for 1 jailer.

Whoops, sorry about the top 4 mixup.  And thanks for taking down those dredge decks... my sideboard was underprepared for them.  Smile

4 Jace is the tech.  Might have to start running some little Jaces now, just to win the inevitable Jace wars...

ryan,

I was the goblin player, Joshua Stein.  It was my first time fielding the mighty boys in red, and I went 2-3.  I used a combination of ambiliventduck and corey's lists, tuned I thought to be able to beat jace control easily.  Whoops!

It was my first vintage event on the west coast, and Im excited for more in the future!  Thanks to the superstars crew for putting this on.

I'm glad you came! If you want to improve your mana drain control matchups, I recommend you look into the more disruptive goblins lists out there with a bunch of maindeck duresses and null rods etc. They don't have the raw speed, but if you're disruptive enough raw speed doesn't matter.

I chalk this up to not sleeving up for 6 months or so, but I made the (incorrect) decision to swap out the null rods for thoughtseizes, which just about every time I would have rather had a null rod out.
