I've been playing a lot of EDH lately and wanted to share my take on Rafiq. He's a fine win condition but I think underwhelming on his own as a primary win condition. I think EDH is basically VintageLite so I like to play with and against broken style EDH decks. The following is my list with notes.
-Survival of the Fittest (Once I hit 6-8 mana, getting this card online is job number one as it's so easy to combo out with. Cards like this make beatdown style decks pointless playing. I'm pretty sure attacking for the win is a poor plan of attack in EDH when there are so many good, easy ways of comboing out in pretty much any color.) -Sylvan Library (Almost as good as Ancestral Recall in EDH. I'm known for drawing right down to 8 life with this card. Probably the best setup engine piece in the deck) -Future Sight (Ridiculous with Top and just generally good. It's effectively drawing several cards a turn even without Top.) -Trinket Mage (Great at getting some of the best cards in the deck, like Top and Sol Ring) -Sensei's Diving Top (Excellent deck manipulation with recurring Fetchlands effects and/or tutors as well as comboing with Future Sight and Magus of the Future) -Magus of the Future (same as Future sight although more vulnerable as it's a creature. I often use this card as removal bait or to force situations like making an opponent Wrath the board since it's getting too insane with really good creatures. If it sticks, all the better.) -Stroke of Genius (Obviously amazing with Mirari's Wake but also an excellent mid-game engine piece) -Mind Spring (same as Stroke except it synergizes with different kinds of cards better, like Seedborn Muse or Glen Elendra Archmage) -Fact or Fiction -Tidings -Mulldrifter (Combos with Reveillark and a good draw spell early in the game) -Idyllic Tutor (The best tutor for the best engines in the deck) -Enlightened Tutor (Really good with Future Sight effects and transitioning from mid to end-game strategies) -Mystical Tutor (same as Enlightened Tutor) -Eladamri's Call (An excellent all-around tutor for various situations. It gets countermagic (Mystic Snake), removal (Venser and Acidic Slime), engine pieces (Magus of the Future, Sun Titan, Mulldrifter) and completes the Reveillark combo. -Primal Command (Graveyard removal, creature tutoring, quasi-removal and life gain. The life gain has actually put me in positions to win several games so it's not irrelevant) -Mirari's Wake (Probably the best comeback card in the deck. Sometimes slow starts are completely mitigated by this card. Singlehandedly swings the game in my favor if I have any cards in my hand) -Mana Crypt -Mana Vault -Sol Ring -Coalition Relic -Nature's Lore (This and Three Visits are my Talismans but immune to artifact removal so more stable sources of mana) -Three Visits -Kodama's Reach -Sakura Tribe-Elder -Rampant Growth -Solemn Simulacrum -Eternal Witness -Seedborn Muse (A card that really allows me to lock up my position in the game. It allows me to tap out more often and still interact while advancing my own gameplan.) -Crucible of Worlds (A really good source of mana with Fetchlands and great for recurring Strip effects. Also, lets me double draw with Horizon Canopy) -Sun Titan (Generally weak but has some really excellent combos with lands. A lot like Crucible but more applications as it can get back destroyed/countered permanents like Sylvan Library or Survival of the Fittest) -Sundering Titan (The best threat in the deck against multi-colored decks) -Genesis -Loaming Shaman -Iona, Shield of Emeria (Punish players for being cute with mono-colored decks. Generally powerful card as it cuts players off the most relevant color they could have at any given point in a game -Tooth and Nail (Probably the second biggest bomb in the deck to Survival. Completes the combo, gets Iona and Sundering Titan or more if you include Eternal Witness) -Mirror Entity (Almost useless outside the combo but plays well if I actually ever cast Rafiq. Often makes him a two-turn kill and even one-turn occasionally) -Body Double (Part of the combo but also has good applications in most games without the combo) -Venser, Shaper Savant (One of my outs to Obliterate but also part of the combo. I just bounce everyone's permanents) -Reveillark (Synergizes with most every creature in the deck) -Wrath of God -Day of Judgment -Austere Command -Oblivion Stone -Bant Charm -Fracturing Gust (Amazing card. I found I wanted to gain life every now and then but I also wanted to punish my opponents for ramping with artifact mana. Also, good against Zur) -Dismantling Blow (This card is really sick. Probably the worst way to lose your Mind over Matter) -Acidic Slime (Also combos with Reveillark but just good solid removal) -Force of Will -Mana Drain -Pact of Negation -Misdirection -Hinder -Mindbreak Trap (My other anti-Obliterate card. It even gets Brain Freeze sometimes) -Glen Elendra Archmage (Another MVP. I've found it hard to lose once this card resolves) -Counterspell -Desertion -Negate -Remand -Cryptic Command -Mystic Snake -Dismiss -Voidslime (I use to sporadically say that I wanted Stifle in the deck but I hate Stifle as I think it's narrow and generally useless. This, however, is exactly what I need. Makes Mindslaver less intimidating, too.)
9 Islands 5 Forest 4 Plains -Tropical Island -Tundra -Savannah -Breeding Pool -Hallowed Fountain -Temple Garden -Flooded Strand -Misty Rainforest -Windswept Heath -Krosan Verge -Glacial Fortress -Sunpetal Grove -Seaside Citadel -Horizon Canopy -Strip Mine -Wasteland -Tectonic Edge
I rarely ever cast Rafiq since there's usually something better to be doing but he can end the game if I'm one on one and I've exhausted my hand or my opponent's general is weak to Rafiq. This is for both 1v1 and Multiplayer. Although I've never played against Vendilion Clique, I imagine it would be quite a beating. I've played against a lot of the mono-colored decks 1v1 and think they're pretty much trash except the blue ones. Multiplayer's a lot of fun and this deck is better in that setting. The deck's really consistent and powerful. The ramp in the deck is fast and I can often keep up with mono green decks. From what I've seen playing, it seems like there's no point in playing anything without blue in it since you can combo out so fast. I was playing Rafiq vs. Niv-Mizzet and we killed each other by turn 6 three times in a handful of games.
