So I was looking on Morphling.de at all the top 8's for Workshop type decks and I noticed a few things and it brought up a question...

A lot of people in Europe play MUD more than anything with Workshops, With an occasional 5c Stax list here and there.

I've been stuck on Mono-R Stax forever now though, I just love it. Here's my question.

Is there a reason that I'm not seeing any Mono-R's in the top 8's? Like 80-90% of what I'm seeing is just Mono Brown, is it because its "better"?
Or is it just because of how the meta is right now that Mono Brown is just being played more? Maybe Mono Red is being played and just not Top 8'ing?

Lodestone Golem...there's your answer.  He's the best artifact critter to date for workshops and he doesn't play nicely with colored spells.  That makes MUD less self-hindered than any other shop version these days.

Well I run Lodestone in my Mono-R build as a 4 of, the welders are the only thing he affects. But on the other hand that's like saying I shouldn't play Lodestones because Sphere of resistance doesn't play nicely with it

I feel like the Bazaar engine for Mono Red is just something too good to pass up because it just has so much synergy with welders. I guess I could be totally wrong since I'm not seeing any Mono Red's top 8 though

i'd say that the reason for that is b/c of "dredge".  it forces folks to run alot of graveyard hate in their sideboards, which impacts other bazaar-based stategies

The reason is because of what your mana base can do as compared to what MUD's can.  Mono Red Stax ought to run at least 6ish red producing lands, which detracts from the ability to run better lands.  Sure good ol' Mountain may have some advantages but I'd much rather have Ancient Tomb which is the best unrestricted imitation of Mishra's Workshop that you can play as well as what I would consider the most underrated lock piece available to Workshops right now, Rishadan Port.  If Port doesn't fit your taste then Mishra's Factory probably does, and if that doesn't do it then Ghost Quarter should.  I feel that right now the mana base weaknesses of mono red as compared to MUD as well as the fact that Goblin Welder is not an actual threat means that MUD is just better.

I have to agree, it has to do witht the more consistent manabase. i have played the red shop deck and even UBA stax, and at some point or another it always happens...you get mana screwed where instead of drawing that ancient/city you draw a loonely mountain, or the other way around.

I would consider the most underrated lock piece available to Workshops right now, Rishadan Port.

I love ports, I run 2 of them in my build =D

the fact that Goblin Welder is not an actual threat

Agree with you on this, I always hate when my opening hand's best plays are like Crucible and Welder

You guys are right on the point that you get mana screwed sometimes with red, I always end up using Bazaar to dig for what I need though. I'm guessing MUD would be way more consistent in that aspect. A turn 1 Hellkite or Karn would be way more threatening than a Turn 1 Welder...
