This is something that came up while out with friends - what are movies that are still popular and/or regularly referred to (or quoted from), from the 15 years prior to 1996 i.e. 1/1/81 - 31/12/95? Some movies from that time frame are better known for a few quotes than the movie itself, but that's ok. That said, this isn't about movies that you personally liked, necessarily.

A few off the top of my head (where a movie is from a series, I've just listed one):

Jurassic Park
Schindler's List
ET
Forrest Gump
Big
When Harry Met Sally
Back to the Future
Die Hard
Terminator
Alien
Lethal Weapon
Ghostbusters
Neverending Story
Silence of the Lambs
Poltergeist
Breakfast Club
Blade Runner
Home Alone
Highlander
Nightmare on Elm St
Friday the 13th
Revenge of the Nerds
Indiana Jones
Pulp Fiction
Tron
Evil Dead
Full Metal Jacket
Braveheart
Top Gun
Princess Bride

I wanted to link the ending but there must be some fool who hasn't seen the movie yet.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

that's a few of the older DVD's on my watchable shelf, there's about 400 more in another cabinet that I don't usually dust off unless I want to see them.

Any John Carpenter film is pretty much the tits from that era.

I note that this isn't about watchable movies from the time, it's about movies that are still, to some extent at least, popular and/or referenced.

First things first - I wasn't saying those weren't "bad" movies.  I was saying they're not culturally relevant.

Lebowski isn't in bold.  I only bolded things that were essentially irrelevant in today's context.

And yes, My Cousin Vinny is essentially irrelevant today.  It's the kind of cut-to that Family Guy will do and have nobody laugh (not that Family Guy's been funny in 5 years anyway, but I digress).  I think it's remembered more for Marisa Tomei's bullshit Academy victory than for anything that's actually in the film.

I think we should better define cultural relevance though; I would draw the line between Casino and Goodfellas.  The former is a great movie; the latter is a classic.

Additions to the list -

The Shawshank Redemption (surprised nobody noted this yet)
Stand by Me
Reservoir Dogs
A Christmas Story
Hoosiers
Aladdin
Beauty and the Beast
The Lion King
Dead Poets' Society

Star Wars is probably a decent metric for "culturally relevant" - for example, even if you're not one of the people who has an opinion on things like Jar-Jar Binks, Lucas' constant digital remakes (occasional retcons), or whether or not it steals some of the magic to know that the Force is something to do with midi-chlorians, you know about Jedis, lightsabers, the Force, etc.  Many of its words and phrases have transcended the movie.  "Jedi mind tricks", "use the Force/MTFBWU" "Luke, I am your father", etc.

Especially that last one - I dunno if there's an English speaker named Luke in the entire world who can risk meeting new people without sort of going "...wait for it..." in the back of their head, at least that's my personal experience :/

Batman and Batman Returns are still watched, they're on TV still.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

The Color Purple (Hugely popular still)

Rain Man (another that's on TV all the time)

Mississippi Burning (a big netflix watch)

FIELD OF FUCKING DREAMS -- again, another classic that is still on TV

The Godfather Part III

Dances with Wolves

UNFORGIVEN -- still hugely popular

A FEW GOOD MEN -- God how many times is this on TV a year? a billion?  How could anyone forget about this film.

I got the blue ray for Christmas.  I agree with this guy.

I think the lists so far are fairly comprehensive, though imdb could be used for additional movies.

We ought to keep in mind that "culturally relevant" is highly subjective.  If we were doing a Top 20 list it would be easier, but as things are it's just a spectrum.

Hard to disagree with any of those, although I note that I mentioned the Indiana Jones series in the OP.

I missed First Blood, though (Rambo).

Unforgiven is sick:

All right, I'm coming out. Any man I see out there, I'm gonna shoot him. Any son of a bitch takes a shot at me, I'm not only gonna kill him, but I'm gonna kill his wife, all his friends, and burn his damn house down.

The Thing rules, btw.  Every time I watch it, I always wonder why they didn't let that Norweigan just shoot the damn dog.

Escape from New York is also a personal favorite.  I hear they are remaking it.

Back on topic....

The Matrix- "There is no spoon", "Whoa" (ah Keanu, truly a fine actor)
Tombstone- "I'm your huckleberry",  "Why, Ed Bailey, are we cross?"  Val Kilmers finest role in my eyes, though MacGruber was close...
Snakes on a Plane-  I know it came and went, but sometimes I get frustrated and have to yell out "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!  I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!".  Warning: This will get you kicked out of an Applebees.

Why don't you go get a friggin job.
In other words:
1. You say hello so someone.
2. They give you the finger in reponse.
3. You shoot them dead.

And somehow you believe that you're going to jail "because you said hello"? I was really just gonna stay out of this, but the logic fail here was just too much.
