 {1} {U}

Creature - Illusion
You may have Phantasmal Image enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield, except it's an Illusion in addition to its other types and it gains "When this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it."

This seems like a great addition to fish. Blue and doubling up on confidant or goyf sounds like a deal to me. The drawback seems minimal, the only major one i can think of is having a goyf die to a single trike shot; dying to chain of vapor is still one for one.

Seems very playable.

The {U} 2/2 with "When this creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, sacrifice it" doesn't seem half bad either.

Copies Blightsteel (and blocks) nicely and can even duplicate Inkwell, although it probably won't block another Inkwell.

Playing Bob-Tendrils with basically 8 copies sounds promissing

I didn't even realize this is a great answer to shroud oath/tinker creatures (or any fatty for that matter).

This card is amazing, I am surprised it doesn't get discussed more.

Sorry for the Necro, but the thread isn't that old and i think this card warrants some discussion.

Given how many of the winning lists at Champs featured creatures, this card seems very very strong. The primary consideration I think is twofold:

1 - Is it really worth running when Metamorph only costs  {1} and 2 life more and can copy artifacts, and doesn't have the illusion drawback?

2 - What sees play in vintage that kills this that makes the illusion drawback active?

For me, i think the answer to #1 is no in workshop deck and yes in decks like Fish and Control that are a bit tighter on mana. The answer to number two?? Lightning bolt and darkblast kill it when it copies a non-shroud fatty. nothing else i can think off sees play that wouldn't kill it anyway.
Thoughts?

Amusingly, Duplicant whiffs on him. Since he dies with the exile trigger still on the stack, they get a 2/4 instead of a 5/3 or 4/2 or whatever. If you copied your own tinker bot, I'm going to assume they'll just hit the original instead of this guy.

Also, I suppose stuff like Pridemage/Claim/Grudge works against him some of the time.

I suppose it's mostly the thought that this format is just one big Mistake; and not even a very sophisticated one at that.
Much like humanity itself.

You can live the dream and kill him with a Voltaic Key when he's an artifact.

Boom.

Oh yeah, that's pretty relevant since the most common targets will be Tinker bots and shop monsters (though show many shop decks play key these days? Not that many).

Phantasmal Image is always good. Why?

- You will run it in a deck with dudes you can copy (Meddling Mage, Revokers, Qasali, ...)
- It can match any Tinker target (this is important against a very early Tinker)
- It is strong against high cc bombs Workshop is throwing at you (Precursor, Wurmcoil, Lodestone, Triskelon, Hellkite are all nice copy targets)
- It kills bridges in the dredge match up
- It copies Sun Titan and if you have several Images in grave they all become Sun Titans.
- It copies Tarmogoyf in the mirror
- It copies Dark Confidant

Image is a highly flexible card and the best 2 drop for  {1}{U} at this moment.
