A little kitten told me that someone's packing new leg sweeping tech for this tournament. Check it out:

I'm in to defend my title. Jimmy McCarthy and I are discussing a savage decklist as I type this to blow you people out and make you shake your heads in disgust.

I vote for a late night Pho run in the city after I lose again in the Top 8 somewhere.

I'm totally in for some pho.

Do you ICBM folks need to train at running because you're always running away from the massacre? What's up with that? Man up and win some games. There's no need to run when you're dominating the dojo.

We're live!  Should be starting relatively soon, sorry about the delays.  We're just finishing up the match area set up and getting everyone registered.

26 people showed up, which was insane.  Thanks to the Ohio crew for representing.

Top 8 included:

Chris Nighbor (Dredge)
Benjamin Carp (me) (Rainbow Demon)
James King (Gush Storm)
Travis Heipp (Fire Fish/LandStill)
Danny Friedman (FoFCaster)
Mr Ruboonia (Confidant Control)
Jason Jaco (MUD)
and one more who I forget, sorry.

I lost to Nighbor in the finals.  There was no split.

This was my first vintage event and sadly it was a miserable experience for me. My Landstill deck just couldn't get anything done. I never had a counter when I needed one in the crucial times; I just didn't like the feel of the deck at all. I wish I had people to play test with but there isn't one person around me that plays vintage. I may build a Merfolk deck, but its pretty disconcerting to pay $25 to get slaughtered for 5 rounds. On the positive side I'm glad so many people showed up, at least there is one monthly vintage tournament by me; I just wish I could get a more solid deck. I'll post my Merfolk deck in the deck board for suggestions.  Very Happy

I think that for a starting Vintage deck, Landstill is a difficult choice. Landstill has a lot of difficult interactions and play decisions, and mistakes on any of them can totally throw away the game. That's a difficult bar to set for yourself when you're still growing accustomed to the format.

It would be much easier to start with something that has a good amount of innate brokenness. Brokenness is fun, because you can just blow people out on a regular basis, and that's a good time. It still rewards clean play, but your power level is so high that you can have slip-ups on occasion and not just die. Landstill will never just win; you have to grind out every game.

As for myself, speaking for the Ohio crew, we had a good time but we got home really, really late. Our driver had to call off work today because it's tough to function on an all-nighter like that, and that's even after I tossed a possible top 8 spot because I figured we should get on the road. A 2pm tournament on a Sunday is very, very difficult for people to travel for, and I think we really felt the pain after this one. If one of us had made top 8, we wouldn't have gotten home before dawn.

But yeah, great time, great folks, just wish we were all closer together. Very Happy

Download Cockatrice from www.cockatrice.de and try out the deck online against real opponents.

Try out other decks too, until you find one that grooves with you.

It was defiantly fun I did piss poorly winning my 1th and 5th rounds only but it just wasn't ment to be that day. Hopefully I will be in the full swing of things by january febuary at the latest. I don't think I missed a step in my long return though I seen some immediate play errors my oponets made that made me laugh hard inside.

This was a fantastic tournament. It was really nice to see that vintage is alive in the midwest, even though nobody wants to admit it. The owners at xtreme were exceptionally courteous and people were having a great time. It would be amazing to have vintage tournaments in Madison/Milwaukee/southern WI...someone make it happen!

EDIT: FOW + FOW on consecutive Confidant flips on my would-be-winning turn in the quarterfinals FTMFL.
