This has been in the works for nearly a year now, but it's finally close to happening. I can't tell you what it is or my job title, but as soon as every i is dotted and t is crossed, I will happily share.
I love the midwest, and I'm very sad to be leaving family and friends, but a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has come up that I simply cannot pass up. Next week, I will be in the Bay area for a planning meeting for my new job, and then looking for housing Friday and Saturday. In particularly, I want to explore Oakland a bit for apartments. '
I plan to revive Vintage in the bay. The bay is -- quite frankly -- the home of Vintage. It's where The Deck began, where Brian Weissman lives, and it is a place where Vintage can return to glory, and I hope to do my part.
However, I know many of you live in that area -- and if anyone is available or free next Thursday afternoon, any time Friday, or Saturday to help me explore the area, learn the city, and look for housing or even just grab lunch, I'd love to meet with you. Please PM me, and we can talk.
I'm very much looking forward to this next and exciting stage of my life, and I hope that my tenure in the bay, however long it may be, will help revive Vintage in that part of the country.
Stephen

Are you working for Google now? Every time one of my EC friends moves to the bay area it's for Google...
Anyway, we have a non-existent Vintage scene in SoCal, but my friend and I would probably be willing to drive up for any "big" events you have. By big I mean anything that happens every few months instead of a run of the mill 10 person weekly tournament.
Congratulations and good luck, I think you'll be happy in the long run. There's a reason we are called the golden state...

I'm from the Bay, born and raised, and I'd advise against living in Oakland if you can help it. Simply put, Oakland is the most ghetto city in the Bay, with 19.4% of the population below the poverty line and crime (violent and otherwise) rates to match. The city is so broke that it can no longer afford to dispatch police officers to 911 calls if no one is immediate danger and if the criminals are no longer on the premises. Unless there is some specific reason (financial, nearby friends/family, etc.) that you must live in Oakland, you're better off commuting from somewhere else in the Bay, especially if you're unused to urban environments.. If you insist upon living in Oakland specifically, than I'd recommend Oakland Hills, as the area is signfiicantly better than the rest of the city. Meme showing how people from the Bay view Oakland.

Great! I just came back to the bayarea after five years and found that the scene in NorCal is basically non existant. There used to be at least 3 places (eudemonia in Berkeley, superstars down south and some other places but none seem to put up any events any more.
With Webster and LSV there used to be some "decent" magic players around. Are you still here?
Apart from that the bayarea is awesome you'll like it. For living, I woul much rather prefer the peninsula, Berkeley or even the city.

Welcome to NorCal! believe me: there are people who would love to get in some Vintage tournies out here!
The Web's and LSV's all turned pro players, and left the scene to get paid. But I'm sure they would dust off their Vintage cards if they had the chance. Web said as much at Worlds SF in Nov.
I could talk to my local shop about maybe doing some Vintage stuff (Vacaville is 50 miles away from San Francisco), but it would probably be lower scale (store credit, or Dual Lands/Drains, as power is scarce here).
God I miss Vintage.

Hi Lotushead, good to hear that your are still in the area and interested. What do you think of Superstars, might they be interested to put s.th. up?

I think the ideal is to hold an event between once every two months or once every 1.5 months. That way you can build upon each event, but not require too much time of folks.
Again, if anyone is available Friday or Saturday to help me learn the area, it would be much appreciated! I need to find an apartment! (at least a temp one).

The Ohio metagame will be a lot softer without your presence.
On the other hand it's good to see the Dark Side expanding its reach.
Good luck!

Doesn't sound like Google if he's looking for an apartment in Oakland. Welcome to the Bay, I am looking forward to some vintage revival though!

Awesome. Vintage has been dying a slow painful death in NorCal, so hopefully having Vintage's most visible player in the area will kickstart things again. I look forward to the upcoming Meandeck Open: West Coast Edition.
Re: Apartment. My brother lives in Alameda, which is very near Oakland, but not nearly as sketchy. Very nice little island community.

I am sure Superstars would always be willing to officiate a Vintage Tourney. It's the putting up of a Mox that makes it financially not-feasible. The loss of Web/LSV/others to pro tour status hurt the scene as they brought their friends (JeffTheFob/Brent/Etc), and my own poverty/work schedules make me (and my posse) be there less. I can't really fault the peoples that travel farther than I from being there (I'm looking at you Reno/Tahoe crew and SoCal peeps) At FNM I will talk to local shop about vintage possibilities.

I have found a place I hope to get near Piedmont ave. I love it.
I will be working for UC Berkeley. I have a tentative offer but some details are still to be ironed out. Looking forward to getting Vintage up and running out here.

Congratulations, Steve. That's great news.
Of course, this makes me even more doubtful about ever getting to spend time with the Painting on my wall...

Well, well, well, just when I was considering dumping all my vintage cards. If you can somehow cast Animate Dead on the vintage scene around here that would be awesome. There are a few of us in SF (anywhere between 2-5) that would still play in events, as well as others from around the Bay Area.
Vintage in the Bay Area- Superstars- The channelfireball higher ups stopped coming, this led to their many followers also not coming. Attendance went from 30 to 20 to 10. When there was only 10 people coming, and you knew exactly what everyone was playing it made it not fun or worth the time to spend an entire weekend day traveling and playing 3 rounds. In their defense, Superstars held them for longer than they should have, considering how unprofitable they were. These haven't fired in 6 months or more.
Eudomonia- They used to run a power 9 series; we got through the 5 moxes in 2009?!! (holy crap that was a long time ago); they gave away free entry to the lotus tournament to people who got 2nd place in the mox tournaments...then never had a lotus tournament. Pretty shitty. Not sure why they stopped, there were some scheduling conflicts, but they never rescheduled.
Anyway, those are the two main vintage stores, both of which now have zero. Hopefully your name will spark some interest in the format around here.

My idea would not be to start with a big tournament.
I think what we need is a grassroots rebuild. What I'd like to do is get folks from different parts of the bay or surrounding region starting up kitchen table testing where I can help coordinate and be involved. In fact, I may even invite folks to my apartment.
I've been told that a crew down at Stanford is also interested. Then, once we have enough people testing on a regular enough basis, I'll try to organize a tournament. My idea for tournaments would be one every 6-10 weeks (i.e. once every 1.5 to 2.5 months) -- so it would be regular enough to keep interest, but not often enough to feed burn out.
There is a great store near where I am probably moving (I'll be moving to the Piedmont Ave neighborhood), but they don't have any space for magic.
I'm not wedded to any particular store, although if I find a store that can do this right and I can work with them like I do in Columbus, then they'll have the advantage.
I will have a few decks built, and I encourage other folks to do the same.
I can't promise anything grand, and this won't happen overnight, but I can promise this: There WILL be Vintage in the bay.

Funny, that is the same conclusion I came to regarding reviving Vintage in Ontario. I host small 15-20 player tournaments in my home on a monthly basis and it has gotten players excited about Vintage again. I am sure a similiar approach will work just as well for you. Best of luck!

Eudemonia had a great judge that would handle the events.
I am not sure what happened at Eudemonia, but my guess is that the economic climate led them to lose interest. They were having trouble securing prizes for the events and some of the tourneys they held came close or actually lost money for them. When things get tight you cut the risky activities.

I live in the bay area and always carry a competitive vintage deck around with me to tournaments. Unfortunately, no one will ever play with me I would be interested in attending any vintage tournaments that come up and could potentially convince 2-3 former vintage players to attend as well.

Can't make it to the vacaville one sadly. Have to help a friend move. There's a tournament for a Time Walk at GP Anaheim on the 26th if anyone hadn't noticed.

Did anyone ever get anything rolling Vintage wise in the Bay Area?
I'll be out in the area starting the 5th of July. I have Thursday night and Friday free. If I recall from a few years back there's Games of Berkeley and Eudomia (sic?). I'll bring a brew out if there's anything happening.
I'll probably be out there every month or so on business.
Thanks, Sean O'Brien
