My opponent had only a Bob as a creature and I had no creatures.  I cast a Sower targeting Bob (obviously).  My opponent responded by casting edict.  I wanted to sac his Bob to the Edict, but was told that my only option would be the Sower.  I don't understand why this would be since I would get Bob when my Sower enters the battlefield.  until my Sower enters the battlefield, his edict would have no targets since I had no other creatures.  Can someone explain this to me?

sower has a CIP trigger, so he can just answear that. Although - if he does - you will get control (permanent) of the Bob.

10/1/2007: If Sower of Temptation leaves the battlefield before the ability resolves, the ability will have no effect.

You won't get the Bob, but the rest it right, your opponent can answer the come into play ability.

While you are right about him being able to edict the sower in response to the trigger, it is not true that you will get permanent control of the bob.  Sower's ability creates a continuous effect with a duration.  If sower is killed before the ability resolves, the duration has already ended, so the ability does nothing...I think you are confusing the interaction with something like oblivion ring which has 2 separate abilities (the order of whose resolution you can abuse), not 1 ability with a duration.

i'm pretty sure that's not the case.
Sower enters the battlefield and the effect "gain control of target creature for as long as Sower of Temptation remains on the battlefield." is put on the stack.
If he responds with edict to that trigger Sower leaves the battlefield, so its ability will have no effect as you only gain control for as long as Sower remains on the battlefield.

Sowers ability is not composed of a enters the battlefield (gain control) and leaves the battlefield (lose control) part where such stack shenanigans would work (like for example on Worldgorger Dragon or Oblivion Ring), but one enters the battlefield ability that has a continuous requirement (remain on the battlefield).
