This holiday season is bringing the Power 9 to MTGO: http://www.wizards.com/magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/feature/223bIt's just cube for now, but it seems we can definitely expect to be able to play Vintage online in the not too distant future.

It will be interesting to see how they do eventually roll out power online

New arts for Lotus, Mana Drain, Mana Vault, Library, Mind Twist.
Very interesting.

Drain, Library, Twist and Lotus all have new art, and while I'd imagine that it's all digital, it's possible that it isn't. I know that Chris Rahn (Lotus) primarily works(ed?) in physical mediums, so...

Also, releasing power on MTGO would be tremendous, and will, hopefully, be a major step towards reinvigorating interest in Vintage.

Chris Rahn generally works in traditional media and the lotus looks like it could be a painting.
Christine Choi did the Mana Vault and is very new to Magic art. I will reach out to her, as I am sure many others will, but to my eye the piece looks digital. Maybe there is a sketch...
Mike Bierek did the drain and he is confirmed as being 100% digital, so that's likely out.
Drew Baker did the Library and works primarily in traditional media. There should be a painting for this one.
Seb McKinnon did the Mind Twist and is also fairly new. I haven't reach out to the artist and by their style I can't readily tell if he is digital or not.

The new Mana Drain art is obviously inferior anyway, so that's ok.

Chris Kiritz hints that by the end of 2013 players will be able to own the Power 9 - corresponding with the 20th anniversary. That seems like a big deal for Vintage...

Too bad Forces are 120 a piece.
I'll avoid Vintage on Modo until they get the staples down to a reasonable price. I already paid for the real thing once, I'm not going to pay a premium for something they can print infinity copies of at any time.

Price is a relative argument though. Even given that Force of Will is over $100, dual lands range from $15 - $30 a piece and fetchlands are even cheaper than that. Most of the staples are less than $30 and most that are expensive you only need one copy of anyway - (like Vampiric Tutor). Its actually really affordable considering how much it would cost to get into paper Vintage.

Isn't there no paper backup for Master's Edition on MTGO? That seems like a decent disincentive for getting in too deep moneywise.

If by that you mean is there set redemption for Masters Edition sets? Then, no, there is no redemption and no guarantee that any card will not be reprinted in large quantities in the future.
I'm all for Vintage on MTGO but I simply don't play it enough to justify laying out that much money for a series of 1 and 0's.

I do hope this mean that vintage will show up on MTGO, if for no other reason than to get more people actually paying attention to the oldest format, and dispel a lot of the excuses I hear from people who aren't willing to even proxy a deck to play! How much love has Classic gotten on MTGO though? that seems to be the best indicator of how vintage would be received and handled on MTGO, since it's the most similar format.
As for me, though, I don't play on MTGO, and don't have any plans to start. I just prefer to play with, and invest in, real cards. A black lotus made of pixels just doesn't have the same draw to me as one I can pick up and handle myself (not that I own a lotus yet, I'm still saving up for one.)

Classic has gotten a lot of love from WoTC. It's still an orphan format though - all in all, it's the only MTGO only format that's not pauper that can still fire a scheduled constructed event, if infrequent at best. There will be MORE than enough love for Vintage online.

Its easy for wotc to get forces into the market. Just offer med packs aa prizes, which they just started doing with the relaunch of the holiday med4 events.

I am super excited. I just made a post about this before reading this thread.
The client is not great, but I think all things will get better in time.
As far as vintage goes, the more involved the merrier!

I've been investing in Vintage staples for a long time. I will definitely be playing once it launches. It is going to be huge for Vintage.
