GP Sydney- Vintage Side event

On Sunday 20th January, 26 souls ventured forth to GP Sydney’s side event Vintage to throw around some cards and have a great time. I must thank Top Deck Events for putting up this side event that drew the support it did. Many thanks also to those who came along to play our format. Eternal is certainly growing in Australia. 26 people is an awesome turnout, especially with the strong presence of eternal players still in the main event and other prestigious events and therefore could not make the Vintage.

5 rounds were played before a cut to top 8. The final prize was split due to the need to drive back to Melbourne before work the next day.

Overall it was a great tournament and I hope Vintage continues to grow here in Australia.

Do you guys have proxy or non-proxy events down there? Whats the tournament scene like?

Most Australian events are non-sanctioned and allow for 10 proxies (to my knowledge) however we generally sanction our larger events (such as GP events or the annual MASTERS event. In my area, I have found this to be accommodating to newer players while giving players purpose for buying power. You will often hear "I am working toward getting X before y" and players generally pick up cards rather quickly.

The eastern coast has the strongest Vintage scenes with groups of players based in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane. I can only speak about Melbourne's scene, maybe others can chime in about the other cities. Tournaments in Melbourne for the last few months have been 10-15 players which is up from last year thanks to some initiatives by the players in recruiting new players. Jimbo (who took 2nd in this tournament) is one such player who only started playing in November.

I'm surprised at only 3 shops decks and zero dredge. We had 3 shops in 14 at GP Auckland in November (and zero dredge) so it seems those decks are out of favour down this part of the world vs the meta game from the rest of the world. It puzzles me a little as it's not like workshops or Bazaar's are super rare down here either, I just think everyone is in love with their Underground Sea's.

It was a sanctioned event so some that could explain the lack of shops decks. Some of our more experienced players also were playing in other events due to the low prize support of the Vintage event so there was the possibility of a higher number of shops decks in the room just not being played.

As to the lack of Dredge, I have no answers to why this would be the case. Dredge has been quite low here in Australia for quite a while now. We had only 2 Dredge decks in our biggest event last year (out of 33 players) and have not had more than 1 deck per tournament since. Even with the almost complete absence of Dredge people are running a minumum of 6 cards (and I mean MINIMUM) for the matchup between main and board so at least the Melbourne scene is extremely hostile to Dredge. I know this was in Sydney but we did bring up a few players for the event.
