Tarmogoyf is a 2/3 (fetchland and lotus petal in the dirt).  I play mountain and bolt the tarmogoyf.  I say it takes 3 and dies, but my opponent says that tarmogoyf becomes 3/4 as soon as bolt resolves and tarm gets +1/+1 at the same time it takes 3 damage and thus survives.  Who is right?

Here's what happens: as the bolt resolves, 3 damage is put onto the Tarmogoyf.  It's a 3 toughness creature with 3 damage on it, uh oh.  But wait!  Creatures die from damage as a state-based action, things which are checked any time a player would receive priority.  So first we have to finish resolving the lightning bolt, which entails putting it into your graveyard.  By the time someone would next receive priority, the bolt is already in the yard and the Goyf has 4 toughness, so it lives.

That sucks.  Oh well...makes a tough critter even tougher to kill!

New question on goyf, but highly related to the aforeasked question.

I have a 4/5 goyf (planeswalker, land, sorcery, 2 instants in graves) and attack.  My opponent plays snapcaster and blocks, flashing back bolt and bolting tarm.  Is tarm dead when damage is traded between creatures, or does it become 5/6 when snap dies?  I assume they die at the same time.  Right?

They die at the same time.

A little more explicitly, here's how it breaks down:

1. Combat damage is dealt to both creatures.  This makes Snapcaster Mage a 2/1 with 4 damage on it and Goyf a 4/5 with 5 damage on it.
2. Before the active player receives priority, state-based effects are checked.  Both Goyf and SCM have lethal damage, which means they are both destroyed.
3. Active player receives priority.

So yes, Goyf and Snapcaster die at the same time.
