Good evening fellas!

Thought I should start my opening post with an idea I have been thinking about for a while.. I want to play mono something, easy, cheap and straightforward in Vintage. White Trash is appealing, so is TMWA... but then I thought about this card: Koth of the Hammer. Can it be a viable budget deck? Thinking about adding the following cards:

4 Koth of the Hammer
2 Gorilla Shaman
1 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
4 Lightning Bolt
2 Price of Progress
4 Red Elemental Blast
4 Pyroblast
1 Wheel of Fortune
4 Simian Spirit Guide

Perhaps a white splash for some hatebears (can add 4 Plateau, 1 Plains, 4 Arid Mesa and 3 other fetches)...

Do anyone fancy to brainstorm a bit around this deck to see if it can be viable?

I would also add 3-4 Grafdigger's Cage and 3-4 Lightning Bolts to your opening build.  8 Red Blasts is probably too many (try 6).  You're in red, so you should have lots of gas against Workshops, probably some combination of Shattering Spree, Ingot Chewer, maybe even Viashino Heretic.  The main problem with mono-red is that you have essentially no draw engine.  Maybe you could try Squee/Bazaar?  Squee also plays well with Jaya Ballard.  Or if you want to splash a color, I would splash black for Bob and Night's Whisper or something like that.

If you're going mono-red, Blood Moon is a house card in the format once resolved.

I have played monored quite a lot last 15 months (but not too much lately, the field seems not optimal to it). I have thought of koth, but couldn't find a reason to play it.

-First ability is only relevant against Jace imho, as a haste creature, and not bounceable. In a "control" build, you are not really aggressive, and those 4 damage are cute, but not a great solution for 2RR.

-Second ability it's bad in most builds. If you already have 2RR, you should be able to play lots of spells. Maybe in a high costs deck focused on welders it could be a boon, helping play Wurmcoils or hellkites (for example). But too narrow imho.

-Ultimatum is great, but slow. You can't afford a card that costs 2RR and does nothing to hose opponent for several turns.

I could be wrong, but for 4cc i prefer Lodestone golem (easier to cast, hits harder, hoses opponents), rakdos dragon (a very dangerous finisher), lord of shatterskull pass (quickly gets out of bolts, dismembers, tarmos). Nevertheless I'd like to read your reasons to play koth Smile

BTW there is a post for TMWA, you can check it for some similar discussions in monored.
