I would be more than willing to drive the extra hour for that kind of prize support and I'm already at just about 3 to the Depot. Fact of the matter is you just don't see that kind of a prize structure for vintage and I'm sure it's well worth it for a lot of other people as well.
QF freaking T. I have absolutely zero problems with driving out to Grim for a tournament such as this. Of course I never had a problem driving out there for smaller NYSE/NEV events. As long as 495 is clear past NYC going further out on the island is really not a big deal. Us Vintage grinders are road warriors by nature. We have to be. The fat guy in me also misses that burrito place a couple doors down from Grim, and the post-tournament chowdown at either Friday's or Port Royal Grille.

If we get to a larger venue, and we have room for a feature match area, and no one else wants to do it, I'd relinquish my spot to stream the games and/or provide commentary a la SCG. If we could get some sort of front page nod/linkage from them on the day of the tournament, that'd be especially sweet.

Though streaming is awesome and generally a good way to get exposure for the format, this may cause a problem with people using proxies - even high quality ones. I don't want to turn this into a proxy debate, but I know people (firsthand) that don't take the format seriously because power is equivalent to a basic plains and a sharpie. Advertising it as such would be a net loss, IMO.

Yes, I think the idea would be to try and get the minimum number of proxies on camera. That said, I can't imagine that adding more footage of high-level Vintage to the world will be anything but a positive for the format.

Sooo someone pointed this out to me and now I'm going to have to be on the look out for qualifier dates. Time to dust off the vintage deck.
Oh, man... We're down to seven out of eight top spots still open? Not good for the rest of us.

@Kamelion. The Jedi are a religious group. They are wise and possess great fighting skills. The Jedi also use a power called the force.

Greg Fenton has won the first N.Y.S.E. Open qualifier! Because Greg had pre-registered for the tournament, the first person has come off the wait list. Congratulations to Phillip Bergeman, you're now pre-registered for the N.Y.S.E. Open!
I'm still working on getting a larger venue. If I do manage to get a larger venue, there will be levels at which the prize support gets bumped. Having run the numbers, the rough outlook for prize support at 90 players would be something like this:
1st - Unlimited Black Lotus, Unlimited Ancestral Recall 2nd - Unlimited Black Lotus 3rd - Unlimited Mox Sapphire 4th - Unlimited Mox Sapphire 5th - Unlimited Time Walk 6th - Unlimited Time Walk 7th - Unlimited Mox Jet 8th - Unlimited Mox Jet 9th - 12th - Mishra's Workshop 13th - 16th - Bazaar of Baghdad 17th - 20th - English Mana Drain 21st - 24th - Undecided
On top of that, there would be a significant amount of prizes given for proxy-less decks, non-powered (non-Dredge) decks, random prizes, door prizes, etc.
I want this event to be a monster, and I'm working on making that happen. I'm also looking to give away an altered card, to the victor to denote their win.
I'll keep updating as things keep happening.
This just keeps on getting better. Hope this works out! I'll be buying my plane ticket within the week.

The registration for this event is going to end up opening up. I'll have the location (which will still be on Long Island) cemented come Wednesday. I hoped to have it ready by today, but I need a little more time.
That being said, once the registration opens up, I'm going to announce tiers for the prize support, with the minimum guarantee of eight pieces of power.
I have a lot in the works with this event right now. I'll keep announcing things once they've been cemented.

Wait lists suck, so I abolished mine...
We have our venue, which is clean, bright, and will be safe, as I will have security on site. We're going to have two dealers on hand for all your needs, there is a kitchen at the venue which will have all the gamer food you'd hope for, and, on top of all of that, you have a kick-ass American Vintage tournament...
I'm still working on more of the details, but we're in for a good time come June 15th. I hope to see you there!

Additionally, there will be giveaways all day long.

There is going to be a $20 Mox event that will run as soon as we hit 20 guys. Beyond that, there is going to be Vintage going on all weekend long.

Nick, the thought of any of those prize scenarios is incredible. This will be an unforgettable event, and hopefully the start of a wonderful series of tournaments. I feel like there should be absolutely no problem in achieving an attendance of at least 70 players. I'm really hoping that more people come through and support the format. With all of that being said, I really like the idea of as many people walking away as winners as possible, having received something for their efforts in the event, even something as "small" as a fetchland. This will also likely keep the tournament staying competitive, even into the later rounds when many people usually drop or are pointlessly playing games just for the heck of it. At the same time, I suppose that having more random giveaways would allow for a wider range of people walking away "as winners," so I'm not entirely sure which would be preferable. How do other people feel on the matter?

I like to see payouts that go deeper for bigger events. If we have about 100 for the event I think paying out to the top 24 is quite reasonable. I prefer this for the reason you mention Greg, it gives incentive for people to continue playing in the event after they are no longer in contention to win. I dislike when a full room becomes empty by the top 8. If there are 30+ people still fighting for prizes at the end, it would be a much more interesting tournament.

Altered Sphere as a prize though? This seems super random. I really wouldn't want to win this no matter what artist did the work.

Thanks, Justin. It is and it isn't. The card is meant more as a prize than as something that people would play. In that regard, it's meant to be in the vein of something like this: I wouldn't play that Will, and I doubt that most players would. Given that the old team name for a few of us up here was the New York Stax Exchange (N.Y.S.E.), and given the number of comments that people have made (myself included) about New York being 'Shop Country', I wanted to have something that fit with that theme. Also, as Roland Chang does Sweet Trinisphere alters, and as many of the other cards are either new frame (which look horrid), or fit into specific decks (i.e. no Smokestacks in Forgemaster builds, no Wires in Terra Nova, no Revokers in Espresso), I wanted to go with something that, in many regards, was the epitome of Shop cards, while also affordable (thus no Workshop alters).

The Altered Sphere is probably part of the first prize because it's an NYSE Open. I hope we get at least 70 players because then I only have to swing for 9-12th.

Nick,
If you looking at professional alters, you might want to try to hook up with Chris Hanson, just incase you need another person to go to.
As it stands, I do have a conflicting event that I am running at Grim that day, plus I am not sure I would be able to lay out $100 the weekend before I leave for Vegas and Miami.
I really, really hope this works out, as this would be the exact type of event I would come out of a "Vintage retirement" for... even if I would be pissed off for never winning a round.

Chris does great stuff, but I've reached out to two of the premier guys who do alters, and I'm waiting on final details from one of them. I hope the event works out as well. I'm doing what I can to turn it into the premier (non Vintage Champs) Vintage event in the U.S.
