2013 Eternal Series at Top Deck Games!

    Saturday, May 11th, 2013
    Top Deck Games
    55 Haddon Ave
Haddon Township (aka Westmont), NJ 08108

Plan to be at the store by 11:00AM.  Out of respect for the players who do show up on time, and to keep the event ending at a reasonable hour, pairings for Round 1 will be going up at Noon.  If you are late, we will be allowing late registration, but it comes with a Round 1 Loss.

Vintage Event

Registration: 11:00 AM (Pairings go up @ 12:00 Noon)
        Entry Fee: $40
        Format: Vintage
        K-Value: Unsanctioned, 10 proxies.
        REL: Competitive (like a PTQ)
        Decklists are required (and published).

        The Prizes:
1st Place: $700 in store credit + FREE NYSE Open Entry
2nd Place: $360 in store credit
        3rd - 4th Place: $150 in store credit
        5th - 8th Place: $80 in store credit
        9th - 16th Place: $40 in store credit

Notable Changes To TDG's Tournaments:

In an effort to create a tournament structure that allows to players to feel that their best interests are at heart, this event will have a dedicated tournament judge to perform deck checks and answer any judge calls immediately during the day.  We guarantee that the judge will be an experienced Vintage judge, know all the strange interactions that will inevitably occur throughout the day.  They will also be performing deck checks and will respect that some decks are quite valuable.  In an effort to make the officiating go smoothly, we ask that your proxies are appropriately noted on your deck sheets and that the cards you have proxied on are legible with the name of the card they represent.

So who's ready for this thing? Are 25 people going to continue to show up to win $2,000 from me?  Cause I'll keep giving it out until everyone gets the memo!  Be there or be square!

And P.S. Thank you Calvin for moving your event so I could hold one this month.

I'll tell you exactly what's holding attendance back...there are so many events in the NJ PA NY area we can literally play in a power event every single weekend of a month. So many stores and so many TO's so attendance gets watered down among them because people can chose which event suites there schedule. Where as a few years ago if you wanted to play vintage it was once a month and you made sure you changed your plans to get out and play vintage. The scene is watered down bc too many events/TO's.

That being said c'mon people these are the best events to be at. Ain't no party like a Nick Coss party! Look at this payout!!! I continue to stay committed to support TDG and Coss as a TO so everyone do there best to do the same!

Completely agree. I think it's a great problem to have — I typically go to three events each month (Bloomsburg, Lancaster, Westmont). I love it, but I also recognize that with more events, there is a segment of players that get a bit more choosy about which events they attend. With so many Vintage events a month, they have the luxury to be choosy. (With the choosers also comes, of course, the diehards, who are at every event regardless. Smile)

There are also Vintage players who are invested in other formats, as well. Some weekends have another great, non-Vintage tournament the same day a Vintage tournament is. Can't really help that. The northeast just has a ton of great events in general.  Cool

If the players' problem is having TOO MANY events to choose from that sounds like a First World problem to me? I think its more along the lines of people only going to particular venues and ignoring others for whatever reason. For a format that claims to have a diehard player base it doesn't seem to reflect that with attendance.

I have been playing in the Northeast vintage scene for probably about 7 years and the attendance starting dropping off when we had 2652638236508432965 TO's running events. People can pick and choose and it waters all of the attendance down...I am not saying that having 89236594862350942356 events is a bad thing, its just why the turnouts at every event are smaller then they were years back. About three years ago we had Blue Bell events as the major player in Vintage on the east coast and they were monthly. These events got easily 40-60 players consistently. Now we have like 4 TO's on the east coast running events and the attendance is around 15-30 I would say...I have no reason to make up why I see it this way because I have seen it happen...

Back to on topic for this thread...I am STOKED for this event!!! Very Happy

I think this is probably part of the issue. I remember a time where if you wanted to play 2 events a mo and you lived in the tristate area you had bluebell and long island (making for some fun drives). Anyways, I think the issue goes past just that and for me personally includes rising prices of tournaments/ cards in general.

Anyways, it's exciting to see that vintage is still happening and a bummer I probably won't be able to make it.

As of right now I am hoping Josh wins Smile

(Despite thinking 3-4 ETW is an overkill)

So how do you guys suggest to support the format outside of more TO's holding more events?

Guys, you're more than welcome to discuss how to grow the community, or what the community needs in order to reach a better place, but that should be discussed in the Vintage Issues forum, not a tournament announcement thread.

I'm really hoping that I'll be able to come to this one! I'm long overdue for a Nick Coss party.

It looks likely, but it appears that graduate school always seems to say otherwise. Hopefully that won't be the case.

Would anybody in my neck of the woods potentially be interested in carpooling? Smile

Repost from TDG's last tournament announcement:

Quote
Also, as many of you know I often make a stop at the legendary John's Roast Pork in South Philly before crossing the bridge into New Jersey. Usually I pick up sandwiches for me, Coss, Mykie Noble, Jules, and whoever else Coss feels like asking. Once I get to TDG I often get a lot of groans from players wishing I had gotten them something. Well, now's your chance. If you want something from JRP reach out to me via PM, text message, or Facebook. I am only posting this offer here, so I'll know anybody who groans tomorrow didn't read this thread! Here's a link to their menu: John's Roast Pork.

TL;DR: PM, text, or Facebook me your John's Roast Pork request for tomorrow. Payment will be due on delivery. You're welcome.

As long as you get your request to me by 8 am tomorrow morning you should be good.

I think it was 24 players. Joel won with Merfolk again, this time over Josh Potucek on Landstill. Me and Ray both lost in top 4 on Burning Oath.
