12 of us launched a Vintage League in Sydney consisting of 8 rounds and a Top4 battling for a 1st prize Unlimited Mox.

It is not a full round Robin and the pairings are generated at random, 2 rounds at a time. Players have 2 weeks to arrange their 2 rounds (so the League will run a little bit over 2 months). Best out of 3, no draw or ID allowed, keep playing until a winner is declared. No time constraint.

Decklists are submitted before each new lot of pairings is revealed. The decks may be different between each round, 75 cards colour proxy allowed.

The top4 will be held in one day sometimes early July at GoodGames and it won't be allowed to change decks throughout the Top4.

The idea behind such League was to make it easy, very accessible and flexible for old and new Vintage players. We all have a busy life and this is the best compromise to get us all to play and rebuild a Vintage scene up there.

$30 entry fee to play 8 rounds and win a Mox is pretty fair.

Results after Rounds 8 are as follow (the table is to be read vertically if it makes sense):

Note that "Games Won" have more weight than "Rounds Won", this should keep the League very tight and encourage people to pull a good fight for games 2 & 3 in order to scrap points

My quick report playing Ritual Oath

Round 1: Graham Tez Grixis...

G1:
Graham is on the play and drops an early Goblin Welder
Turn 2 he tinkers Battlesphere into play. I would have been in real problem should he tinkered for Colossus but he doesn’t play Colossus!
My turn 2, I play Oath
Turn 3, Graham deals 12 damages, I’m on 8. He then skullclamp away 3 Myr tokens netting him 6 cards and tapping most of his mana. He didn’t draw gas and pass turn.
My turn 3, I oath up a Griselbrand and draw 7 bringing me to 1 life. I manage to get there Wishing for TimeWalk and Tendrils.

G2:
I play a first turn Demonic Consultation of my Orchard. Graham missteps.
Graham lands a Baleful Strix turn 2
My Turn 2, I manage to hardcast Griselbrand using Tolarian Academy and Dark Rituals.
I draw 14 cards. I had a greedy win available but it would have involved starting by casting a Dark Rituals. I decide to pass turn because a single misstep would have stopped me straight. I discard a lot of cards, keeping a hand full of Tutors, Wishes, Draw7, Flusterstorm, Hurkyl’s Recall and 3 mana open on the board to cast both if needed. I’m on 4 life.
His turn he plays Mox and Tinker it away. That’s just enough to get Flusterstormed. He declares attack with Baleful but I bounce it back using Hurkyl’s. He can’t play it back. Turn. Graham’s master plan was to put me on 3 life using Baleful Strix and then weld my Mana Crypt back into play to kill me with the dice roll during the next upkeep! Not good enough Jedi!
My turn I’m on 4 life. Attack, Draw7, Tendrils, Win.

I was expecting much more permission for Graham’s deck. Mana Drain & Jace seemed very clunky in that match-up. He played a lot of his instants such as Izzet Charm, Thrist for Knowledge at sorcery speed but they didn’t give him the fuel he was expecting and it actually back-fired giving me a good window to play my bombs. I was expecting him to mind-trick me a lot more and control the game. I had no idea of how many counters he was running and I would have certainly wasted more time & resources trying to play around his potential permissions.

Round 2: Dion UW Landstill

G1:
I’m on the play. I have no Land in hand.
I open up with Black Lotus. It resolves. I crack Lotus for 3 Blue to cast ACall with Flusterstorm back-up. Acall Resolve and draws me Orchard.
I play Orchard, then Oath. Dion FOWs. I Flusterstorm!
Next turn I go broken.

G2:
Dion mulls to 6 and plays a Land.
I cast an early Duress revealing: Balance, Steel Sabotage, Crucible, Island , Library of Alex, STP. I remove the STP.
Dion resolves a Standstill. I play through it and a combination of ACall + Lotus + Oath in the first 3 turns get me there again.

I was expecting a tough match-up, working around multiple Engineered Explosives and loads of counterspells. I had two good opening hands and manage to cast about 2 Acall & 2 Lotus in both games. We played a few more games after, the match-up was in my favour only loosing a couple of times after fizzling badly such as exiling 2 Griselbrand from Demonic Consultation

Other notable quotes from Rounds 1 & 2 were:

- Will: "0-2 against rug delver because i'm retarded. Literally cost myself both games"

- Graham: "Since my Round 1 report has already been done by Thomas, here's my Round 2 Vs Euguene:
         - Game 1: He was playing eggs, so I had about 19 turns to assemble Vault-Key and he scooped.
         - Game 2: see game 1."

- Luke: "Game 2, I probably misplayed turn 1. On the Draw, my hand was 2 Unmask 1 Bazaar 1 grave troll and some other cards. I drew and discarded grave troll into surgical extraction. (I wanted to dredge a lot turn 2 with bazaar) I should probably have Unmasked (taking surgical)..."
- Me: "Well that's why you are running Unmask dum-ass! Best card in your deck"
- Luke: "If I knew he was playing surgical I would have!"
- Me: "What about discarding cards like EE, Rest in Peace, Ravenous Trap...????"
- Luke: "...." more excuses digging himself a hole

Will had the best play: triggering Oath, while his opponent had no creatures in play. After revealing half of his deck, he scooped.

Dion (mud) defeated Ben Jordan (dredge) 2-1
Adam (wbg junk) defeated Will (rug delver) 2-0
Graham (cobra gush) defeated Luke (regrowth gush) 2-1

Round 4

Many leaguers organise their games to fit personal schedules. But the most common gathering of multiple leaguers is Monday nights from 6pm onwards at http://www.goodgames.com.au/stores/nsw/sydney-town-hall.html

We haven't posted many lists so far because it is simply too much raw data, but this is Will's deck which I thought was interesting:

WILL'S RED MUD

3 Gorilla Shaman
4 Magus of the Moon
3 Porcelain Legionnaire
4 Lodestone Golem
3 Phyrexian Revoker
2 Phyrexian Metamorph
2 Karn, Silver Golem

4 Lightning Bolt

3 Expedition Map
4 Thorn of Amethyst
3 Tangle Wire

1 Mox Pearl
1 Mox Emerald
1 Mox Sapphire
1 Mox Ruby
1 Mox Jet
1 Mana Crypt
1 Sol Ring
1 Black Lotus

5 Mountain
2 Cavern of Souls
2 Ancient Tomb
3 Wasteland
4 Mishra's Workshop
1 Strip Mine
1 Tolarian Academy

Sideboard:
4 Grafdigger's Cage
2 Crucible of Worlds
2 Spawning Pit
2 Ingot Chewer
3 Red Elemental Blast
2 Dismember

The above decklist beat URg Standstill (me) and Neo-Academy (Dion) in rounds 5 & 6.

I think Will's deck and card choices made a lot of sense.
- First, Combo was overly played for the first 4 rounds so MUD was a natural and logical predator to play
- Second, Will probably expected people to start playing MUD as well since Rob had been piloting it with great success so far in the first 4 rounds of the League. Also, BOM Top8 may have indicated that players in the League would try more Forgemaster/MUD variants
- Then, I reckon Will tried to counter-counter-bluff us, expecting people to start playing Landstill (which also beats Combo) so he ended up tunning an AGGRO MUDish list!

Anyway, I think Will's list shines for the following 4 reasons:
- Reb Mud but no Welder. Only Gorilla Shaman, Magus of the Moon and Bolts: cards that do something straight away. No slow or cute stuff
- 3 Porcelain Legionnaire. The card is a strong beater across the field and in the MUD mirror. I think it's only weakness is the presence of Triskelion in Rob's top decklist.
- No Chalice of the Void. Chalice indeed stops some of Will's cards, but in the MUD mirror the first Chalice will probably not be played for 1. I'm no MUD expert but, in the Mirror, it seems that only Chalice @0 on the play is relevant and, if not too late, Shaman may be an answer to that if needed. Against Combo, Will choosed to rely on Thorn of Amethyst which severely impacts everything (unlike Chalice @ X). It was said that Neo-Acadamy simply couldn't play under a Thorn!
- Spawning Pit in the sideboard. Very cool tech that I've just discovered. Seems good against Oath and also OK against Dredge to remove Bridges.

In the Landstill match-up, Will's dudes were simply too many for me to contain. Shaman was irrelevant but still, it is a slow beater and Mishra's factory too slow to be a relevant blocker in these games. Not to mention that Magus of the Moon was simply back-breaking in game 1, I wasn't expecting him at all and didn't draw into my Fire/Ice, Bolt or Echoing Truth early enough (I wasn't counting on Jace anymore at this stage)

Other than that, I'm trying to get Will himself to give us a few more info/feedback on his deck & choices but I have the feeling that he doesn't want to spoil everything before rounds 7&8 are completed.
