The commander decks are released and become legal the day before eternal weekend. That is insane.

So a card on the level of Flusterstorm, Shardless Agent, or Baleful Strix could be introduced with really limited amount of time for testing.  Cool.

They should be fully spoiled at least a few weeks before release though, so you can test with 100% accurate proxies.

Vintage is a lovely format, it's too bad so few people can play because the supply of power is so small.

Chess really changed when they decided to stop making Queens and Bishops.  I'm just glad I got my copies before the prices went crazy.

The only vintage playable NEW cards from the last round of commander decks were Scavenging Ooze and Flusterstorm.

Ooze is only a modest improvement over Goyf. The comparison was drawn at the time and it was already recognized that some decks wanted one while some decks wanted the other. The critterfication of Vintage was unseen as snappy hadn't seen print quite yet.

Flusterstorm was arguably a game-changer, but it was obviously so from the minute it was spoiled.

We've gotten so much better at evaluating new cards that I just can't see this being a problem. Remember when we were unsure if Jace TMS was a playable?

Flusterstorm was definitely not obvious, and took more then a week for people to start playing it.

This seems like a good business plan by wizards.  Itll force all the vintage/legacy players that are planning on using cards from them to buy the decks in order to get the handful of cards they need.  Hopefully they print enough so we don't end up with $20 "uncommons" this time.

It will be interesting to see if any of the new cards is powerful enough to reach a top 8 in the champs.  People will definitely be looking hard to break the format right before champs.  We recieved what seem to be three permanent main stays in the format, baleful strix, flusterstorm, and scavening ooze, from the last set, which is more than can be said about most sets of magic.  So there certainly should be at least one great card.

More like "random coincidence that the weekend of the newly rescheduled legacy/vintage champs happens to coincide with the previously scheduled release date for an annual product" IMO.  Will it result in some tournament players cracking boxes to get cards?  Maybe, but it's still a drop in the bucket compared to the number of these things they sell.

At the very least, it was obviously worth testing. It took a while for people to realize that it was better than Spell Pierce despite whiffing against Shops. There's a difference between "obviously in need of testing" vs "obviously better than existing options."

Other than Slash Panther (and still questioning it!), I haven't been surprised by a playable since Jace.

The thing I worry about more than testing is availability.  A lot of people may be traveling on release day and need to pick it up in Philly.  So there may not be enough supply for everyone.

That's an interesting point as well. The two biggest Planechase cards, Baleful Strix and Shardless Agent, at least came two per $20 deck. Since this is Commander every card will obviously be a one-of in a $30 deck. Plus any deck that is worth buying just for a single playable will likely (though certainly not definitely) be the most popular deck anyway, and each deck is one per case. In the long run I don't think it will be a problem (these aren't specifically limited like Arsenals and FTVs are), but right away it could be difficult to get even if you can go to your LGS on release day.

It's not irrelevant that anything worth playing will also be unrestricted. If they print snow duals, Blackest Lotus, arcane Time Walk, or something else bonkers, it'll be a 4-of. That means that everyone will need 4 packages of that deck.

Demonstration of power vs uncertainty deserving testing on its own merit.
