Hey all,
We're having our annual sanctioned vintage which will be the same 15ish powered players, I'd like to chuck something into the prize pool to encourage unpowered players. What do you guys suggest I give? Should it be a vintage card or a legacy card? I'm sort of leaning towards a dual land or maybe a Jace, the Mind Sculptor?

Prize for unpowered deck, definitely a dual land, Jace, Tms Or Mana Drain. You could do a playset of wastelands instead. Nowadays it is hard to say what cards are Legacy cards or vintage cards (apart from the B&R list of course.)

Back when we had local type 1, we would have stuff for unpowered players just for participating in the tournament. Stuff like: Limited ed mtg playmat, mtg binders, creature tokens (mostly squirel), or even a free entry to the next type 1 tournament. Just to encourage them to keep coming back.

Hope this helps.

Just so you know Wastelands are around $90 a piece now, so giving a play set away is almost as much as a piece of power haha... Magic is so expensive

Glad you said this, I was going huh? at a playset of wastelands. That's more value than the winner of the event is getting!

Yeah I'm glad I picked mine up shortly after Eternal Weekend for $50 each (although to be honest it was my 3rd playset, I sold my other sets away awhile ago. Magic is just too damn expensive sometimes haha.

Yer agreed. I've got 2 play sets of wastelands so I can have multiple legacy decks sleeved up at once.

I bought a SP Scrubland today to use as this prize.

Oh, snap!! Had no clue wastelands were up by so much. I completed my set early last summer at $40-45 each. Hadn't looked them up since. Until recently, I didn't bother with Zendikar fetchlands either.

It makes sense though. Back when duals were ~$20-25, watelands were ~$6-12.
Now that duals are hitting closer to $200, I can see wastelands getting to $100 in no time.

Have you made your choice for what prize you are putting up?

Edit: I had posted on my phone so I missed that part saying about the scrubland.  Hope all goes well Smile
