10 brave souls brought 20 year-old decks (no proxies) to battle for eternal glory and store credit at Eudemonia yesterday.  We played Swiss+1 (5 rounds) in order to maximize the number of matches for each player.  This was successful, as all but one player stayed for all 5 rounds.  In the end it was Smennen winning the tournament with a 4-0-1 record.

warms my heart to see a Sedge Troll into Serra Angel combat bluff. Also DQ for Chronicles Hell's Caretaker.

Thanks for the pics!

No DQ. We allowed Chronicles and Revised in this one. Also non-English versions. We're just progressive like that out here in Kali. This was even sanctioned.

This event was a blast! Thanks to BC for organizing and Eudo for hosting! The enthusiasm from literally everyone was amazing, players and observers alike. Chaos Orbs flying around, bouncing off things, sometimes onto the floor. Gasps and hoots periodically, drawing attention to the sheer awesomeness of the games unfolding all around. Just imagine Steve just about giggling in excitement, giddy like a school girl, as Blaine tosses his Psychic Purge on the table discarded from Heiner's Mind Twist (those of us there don't have to imagine 'cause we witnessed it)! And this went on all afternoon. Definitely the most fun I've had at a tournament in a while (despite losing multiple games to double Psionic Blast, from different opponents even). This might possibly be the best Magic format ever.

I think Heiner wins for sickest deck though. Freaking Serendib Djinns! And Jovial Evils out of the board! Oh so Greedy... I love it!

Triskelion is by far the best creature in the format, which isn't surprising given that it still sees Vintage play today.

This was an enormously fun tournament.   %age wise, I played more intense and close games than I can ever remember.

The two big differences between this and modern Vintage is that baiting to get your opponent to tap down was hugely important.  I had forgotten the value of cards like Mana Short!  That hasn't been important in Vintage since, I wanna say Gifts.

The other big difference is that I found I could overcome even the most lopsided situations with tight play.  There was almost no game that was insurmountable, in large part to the restriction of Mana Drain.  My games were incredibly swingy, but in a good way.

In Round 3, my opponent had turn one library, and had it active for three turns. I got a third turn library, and a fourth turn Disrupting Scepter, and managed to use it to get him out of library range, and win the game.

In a game against Dustin, he had active Library, but I managed to get him to tap down on his endstep, and untapped and play Transmute Artifact for City in a Bottle and knocked out Library AND Two City of Brass!

In my first game against Blaine, I had pretty decent control, with a Disrupting Scepter emptying his hand, and a Serra Angel and a Millstone attacking him from two angles, with him having no threats!  But he topdecked a Psionic blast that killed my Angel and then topdecked a Braingeyser and drew 8 cards!  I only had like 2 cards in hand!  I thought I was toast, but I managed to squeeze myself back into the game, survived with a Forcefield and Maze of Ith, and then eventually decked him!

I love that Adam played Mark Chalice' The Machine (from my History of Vintage chapter!).  That was a deck I was also building!

I was definitely giggly as a school girl playing all of these sweet cards.  The most fun I've had in a long time!

Yeah, this format generates intense games where tight play matters a lot (I know I lost a few games to loose play that I might have won otherwise). It feels swingy (in the good back and forth way) because of the power of some of the cards, but since the game rarely ends right away (as it does in modern Vintage) there is frequently still a chance to come back with tight play and/or a sick topdeck. In one of my games against Eliot, he white-weenied me down to 3 life and I thought I was dead for sure, but managed to come back and take control of the game. But it took a bit of luck and careful play over the course of many intense, nail-biting turns.

As we discussed before the tournament, this format has decisions and interaction reminiscent of modern Vintage, but almost always spread out over many turns rather than often being compressed into just a few. This makes tapping out and baiting a huge deal because there are so many more opportunities to screw it up. Which sounds like Standard or something, but instead it's awesome because mind games, bluffing, and baiting are so important because of the high impact of the swingy cards.

We were initially worried that matches would end up going to time a lot because the games feel so long and "slow", but as Steve noted during the discussion, it is probably just an illusion due to number of turns taken in a typical game. I wonder how many turns the average game went on for?

Interesting to note that the two Transmute decks played the "finals" for first place.  I decided that I thought Transmute was one of the best unrestricted cards in this format, as did Blaine.

I played straight blue/white rather than 5c to abuse City in A Bottle and for Blood Moon invulnerability.

I played Suicide-BU, here's my short report.

1. Steven with UW-Control
Steven goes first with Tundra. I play land, rit, Specter who goes farming immediately, second turn I drop Strip Mine, rit, Juzam. Steven plays some more land Juzam attacks for five. Steven drops Moat which is pretty much game although I have Gloom next turn. Would I have stripped his tundra to deny him the second white, gloom would have come down shutting of Moat which probably would have won  me the game as I followed up the Djinn with 2 Pumpknights. Steve gets his draw engine going and thats game.

Second game I sideboard 2 more Gloom and 2 Energy Flux for some Djinns. I start with a strong hand that has first turn ancestral and some moxen, then second turn Ritual, Greed, draw 2. I draw another 3 on turn three but then Steven finds his Disenchant. Again I was to greedy, I should have played Gloom instead of drawing 3 to keep alive my Greed. Still I am in good shape drop some creatures and start beating. I also drop 3 Gloom taking out his white cards completely. However, Steven plays Ancestral, gets ahead and slowly stabilizes. He chaos orbs a flyer, drops Maze of Ith and control Magic on one of my creatures. I drain life one stolen Knight but he steals another one and starts beating with it and a factory. I am at 5 life or so and finally draw Demonic. There is no single card that could help me so I go for Timetwister. Its a good one. I play Serendib go. He attacks with his 2 creatures and untaps one of his with Maze. I play Drain Life for 6 or so and attack with Efreet. Next turn I have Psi Blast to finish him off. 3rd times out so we draw.

2. Eliott with Zoo
I start with some Specters and Knights which both eat a lightning bolt. I get one Serendib Efreet to stick but he plays Juzam+Crossroads and immediately attacks. I have 2 Juzams in my hand and only need a fourth mana to easily win the game but I don't draw one for 3 turns and his Juzam wins the race.
Second game, I have a first turn specter and he doesn't have the bolt. He turns sideways 3 times before he plays Hurricane to take him out and one of my Serendibs but I drop 2 Juzams in the following 2 turns.
Third game I drain life 2 Kird Apes and he bolts one of my specters. We play draw go and he gets a Juzam down and handles all I have. I am still confident as I have lots of mana and Timetwister. I something like twister, time walk, then Mind Twist him for 5 and then drop huge creatures the next turn.

3. Blaine with Monoblue-Artifacts.
He has 4 counterspells and counters everything I have and then drops a creature. I was pretty low on life already.
Second game I get first turn Necropotence and in the next 3 turns I draw 2 extra cards every turn, drop at least 2 mana, have a couple rituals and beaters. He can't cope with that.
Third game he keeps a one lander with ancestral that does not draw him a land. I have first turn Specter and 2nd turn Greed and a couple turns later I have the game under full control with 6 mana against his 2, 2 creatures, 7 cards including drain life against his 3 and I am at 6 life. Now epic things happen with Specter discarding Psychic Purge, putting me to 1, I drain life, he mana drains, I drain life again for one and Efreet finishes me off two turns later. I misplayed this again as I could have demonic tutored for Strip Mine the turn before taking out his second land for drain.

4. Adam with the Machine
He starts with library but I get down a Specter so although I cant get him below 7 cards it slows him down as he can only play one card per turn. I increase the beatz and at some point he goes for it dropping 2 Hell's Caretaker and Bazaar. He bazaars twice and puts 2 Trike in his yard. I take out one Caretaker but he can get one trike out to ping my Specter, I then drop Juzam and finish him off with 2 Psi Blasts soon thereafter.
Second game he has a lot of mana and drops Trike and Pentavus. I take out Pentavus with Psi Blast ignore Trike and beat him to death quickly with Serendib Efreet+Serendib Djinn.

5. Dustin with Weissman Control
I mulligan to 5 both games while he has first turn Library one game and ancestral+tome the other.

Apart from game five I was really happy with the deck. Without my mistakes I should have easily made 3:1:1 or 4:1. The deck plays the format's best creatures ignoring bolts/trikes and runs a great draw engine. Greed is awesome but the deck needs to be constructed around it. In control, it just doesn't work but in this deck its super broken. 4 Greed is an absolute must to stand a chance against control. White weenie can be a problem but it can be well handled with Gloom and Jovian Evil which is usually 8-10 damage for 3 mana. Another broken card (at least in this artifact heavy meta) was Energy Flux. I sideboarded it 3 games and it usually took out 3+ moxen and other artifacts.
I didn't have that much fun at a tournament for a long time, the format is great and has more depth that one would think. Many games were really tight and its just super fun to play an undeveloped format which holds so many surprising decks albeit the small card pool. I am definitely looking forward to the next one!

Very nice report!  I LOVE your deck.  I disagree with Adam: I think Hypnotic Specter is probably the best creature in the format, so I loved your sweet deck.  I think it may have been TOO suicidal, but I like what you were trying to do.

If Blaine unrestricts Hymn, your deck gets a nice boost for the next tournament!

I wish I had taken notes, but this game was fascinating.  You played T1: Hippie and T2: Juzam!  Must be nice!

Actually, you didn't know this, but I had 2 Plows in my opening hand, and when you attacked with the Juzam on T2, I strongly debated whether to plow it.  The reason I didn't was because I knew I was going to try to play Moat on T3.  Your sequencing is off a little bit.  I played a Strip Mine on you, I think, on turn 2 (when I plowed the Hippie).  In retrospect, I regret doing that, as I would have been able to play the Moat a turn earlier.  It didn't prevent you from playing a Turn 2 Juzam.  Had I not Stripped you, I would have gotten the Moat down before your Gloom either way!

This was a truly crazy game.  For whatever reason, I didn't draw a single counterspell against you in either game!

On my last turn, I played Control Magic on your Serindib so that I could kill you next turn almost no matter what you did unless you had another Drain life or a Pisonic Blast.  Turns out you had Psionic Blast.

One thing that you forgot is that my Chaos Orb didn't flip!  I made every other Chaos Orb flip on the day except this one.  Nerves!  If my Orb had hit one of your Glooms, I would have been able to cast a plow or a Disenchant under the Gloom (and then the 2nd), even with Flux in play since I had 8 land in play (and two Moxen I dropped just to use once).  I ended the game with plow, Disenchant, and a Serra Angel in hand.

That said, I was really happy that I really didn't rely on White cards.  I boarded in Control Magics, etc against you.

I truly thought I was going to beat you.  You played Drain Life on me for 9, taking me from 13 to 4, and I had lethal on board next turn,  but you had that Psionic Blast!  That Twister truly murdered me!

When I was preparing for this tournament, I expected more people to be prepared for Moat.  I should have gone with my gut, and realized that folks out here were very Moat vulnerable!

I think if I had made that Chaos Orb flip I win game 2 no problem.

City in a Bottle is pretty good against your deck!  Hits Juzams, all 5 Serindibs, and your City of Brass!

I wish we had gotten a chance to play a third game!  This was a great match.

So here's my list, assembled drunkenly the Saturday before the tourney (Didn't know I could make it until then).
Features include ALL of my blue dual lands, my precious ALPHA DEMONIC HORDES that I traded like $50 worth of solid standard cards to get (Scars Swords, Zen Fetches, etc).  It's a piece of history and it's MINE! Smile  Tropical Island and Mox Emerald support Regrowth for whatever and TimeTwister. Volcanic and Felwar Stones support the red SB cards against city of brass decks.  Remove Souls sounded solid since I didnt' have any revised Counter Spells. (and didn't find Power Sink, Spell Blast).

I wasn't the only one on Felwar Stones

Heiner chillin with his Jizz on his side of the Moat.

I don't own any trophy old school Icy Manipulators anymore, or I would have played 1 or more.

G1 I cut Elliot to his Black Lotus and Hypnotic Specter, and did nothing for rest of game.
G2 I cut Elliot to his Black Lotus, land and Mind Twist and he fucked my 2 land 2 felwar stone hand into a 1 land 1 felwar stone hand.
G3 and G4 for fun I Pwned him. :/

I lost round 1 to White Weenie on the right. Close games, but my Armageddon sigleton got cast 3 times to his 3-of Armeggedon's zero times. Smile

I believe BC got the PSYCHIC SURGE KILL vs Heiner just before I took this pic. Smile

I started off 0-3 with my Chaos Orb, but ended up 3-3 by end of tourney. Smile

I believe Aahz pulled tripple Triskellion from topdeck, then a whiff, then a trike. Then got fireballed out of the game.

Hehehehe... That's like 14 lands in Patricks graveyard. Smile

Great photos Jeff!

Fellwar Stone is actually fantastic.  I really wanted to play with one or more, since I focused so much on Transmute Artifact, and Felwar Stone facilitates that so well by playing Turn One Felware Stone, turn two Transmute for an expensive threat.  If I was playing blaine's deck, I would have definitely played Felwar Stone over Monoliths.  T1: FS, T2: Transmute for Jugger or Su-Chi with land, land, Mox, FS.

You captured game one of me versus Heiner where he described giving me an opportunity to play Moat!  I see Transmute Artifact is on the stack!  I thought long and hard and decided to get City in a Bottle there since his Efreet could fly over the Moat.   City in a Bottle was Doom Blade there!

I was gonna play my ol' common card deck from back in the day:

4 Kird Ape
4 Grizzly Bear
4 Giant Spider
4 Craw Wurm

4 Giant Growth
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Fireball
4 Disintegrate
4 Tranquility

1 Sol Rin
1 Channel
1 Regrowth

11 Mountains
11 Forests

Obv, Craw Wurms should be Elvish Archers (2/1 First Strike) and Spiders should be Llanowar Elves

Defintately felt the sting of only being semi-powered with zero draw engine. (Didn't realize how little there was...)

Had a total blast anyways!

This thread has filled me with happiness! Respect to everyone who took part - looks like truly awesome format! I need to sleeve something up and find some people to play with...

Out of interest, what errata did you use for Chaos Orb? Was it that you can't move your stuff when it comes into play?

It was outlined at top of Tourney Announcement thread (in the Eudo link).

Basically, you named targer card. You hit it, or you didn't.  Based on flipping skill.  This might or might not change in our scene.
We were all pretty happy with it.

Basically you target a card with your Chaos Orb and then flip it.  If it touches the card AT ALL during the flip, the card is destroyed.  Chaos Orb doesn't have to settle on the card.  I think it's a pretty fair way to play Chaos Orb; success rate at the tournament was probably 80-90%.  There was much discussion about the proper way to flip a Chaos Orb.  Techniques ranged from Smennen's "I need to go over to your side of the table" method to Lotushead's "overhand toss from a seated position" technique.

My basic technique for chaos orb is to hold the card between my thumb and index finger with one hand, holding it directly above the card I want to target, and use my other hand's index finger to tap one side of the card on to the table.  It always does a 360 flip this way and hits the directed target.  That is the "correct" way to use Chaos Orb Wink

Didn't you miss at least one of your flips though?

I was using technique borrowed from Blaine and batted 100% with my Chaos Orb flips. ;0P

I think the most important part of flipping Chaos Orb is slow rolling it so that as many eyes are watching as possible. It's more fun with an audience and less likely to lead to disputes about the outcome.

I missed only my first flip, and that's because I wasn't directly over the card.  I made the next 5 flips Smile

I realized that my technique is a little different than Blaine's, though it was heavily influenced by it.

How to Flip a Chaos Orb:
From a standing position, hold Chaos Orb with both hands about 45 cm directly above the target card (which isn't technically targeted in the rules sense):

Move one hand upward in a circular motion and the other hand downward in a circular motion to give the card some spin.

Release the Orb when it is approximately vertical and perpendicular to the playing field (not Battlefield, as this is Old School). It should flip once or twice then land on the offensive permanent that needed destroying (or perhaps bounce off it).

Now that pesky permanent is out of the way and you can return your attention to your adult beverage (or winning the game, if that's more your style, possibly both).

My technique is a little different.  I also hover directly above the target and hold the Orb with two hands on the top and bottom, but rather then flip the card "vertically" (i.e., rotating about it's x-axis), I twist my fingers so that the thumb extends and the index fingers retract, thus spinning the card "horizontally" (i.e., rotating about the y-axis).

Gotta say, I really like the look of this format!  Awesome pics too!

Sad that hymn is restricted, I think a modified version of hymn, hymn, I win would be a super powerhouse in this format.

I suspect it will be unrestricted next time, possibly with some other shake ups. BC handed out surveys to gauge opinions about the format including things like allowed sets, restricted list, and how much beer would improve the experience. I, for one, am eagerly awaiting the summary. Can't wait to start building a deck for the next one.

I was the only one playing Hymn and I was objecting to its unrestriction. (but then again I also voted for banning Empires completely)

I'm definitely picking up a Chaos Orb so I can come properly equipped next time. Will have to practice with it though Surprised!

I did pretty terribly in this, winning only one match based on having Lotus in my opening hand twice due to LotusHead's poor deck cutting skills as he mentioned. Will try to do some actual play testing and tuning before the next one.

We got a nice write-up on the Old School Magic blog: http://oldschool-mtg.blogspot.com/2014/05/showdown-in-eudemonia.html

In addition to minor tweaks to the B&R list, I would be open to minor rules changes from tournament to tournament.  For example, I would very much like to see Winter Orb work as it was intended to do Smile

I think it would be awesome if we had a well defined set of B/R lists/rules tweeks each time.

Mana burn or not?
Tapped blockers deal no damage or not?

I'm  sure lots of our deck choices would be different if say, 4 strip mines ok, etc.
