Here is a brief report I created on FB:
As I let everyone know Saturday(on Facebook), I ended up splitting the Finals of the Vintage event at Top Deck Games with Ryan Tigro. I played Matt Elias's Turtle Dredge deck featured here:
http://sales.starcitygames.com/deckdatabase/displaydeck.php…. Yes, 75/75 of his 2010 deck. Eric Baker supplied me with the cards because he was busy moving into his first apartment! Go Eric! Many people have asked me to recount my path to victory, so here it is:
Round 1: Pat Morris - Turbo Tezz
Game 1: I lead with turn 0 Leyline, Chalice, and Bazaar and Pat tells me that he thinks I'm on the Bubonic Plague from the week prior. Luckily he has a slower hand and mine is quite strong with a Dredger and some Bridges.
Game 2: Pat has to mulligan and settles into a 5 with Ancestral and Lotus. I have fast action and his lack of hate shines through. His ancestral doesn't get him business enough and the Zombie army ate his brains!
Round 2: Chris Pankiewicz - URg Delver
Game 1: He hopes I'm not on the Plague. I tell him that I'm afraid I've got some bad news, it's worse for him than that. Without any way to really disrupt me I pick apart his hand with Therapy's and make a horde of Zombies.
Game 2: He has to mulligan for a reasonable hand and I have disruption. He draws 2 Young Pyromancers instead of good cards in the match up and gets put down by a horde of Zombies again. Nom Nom Nom on those brains!
Round 3: Ryan Glackin - Dr. Edge's Laboratory
Game 1: I have turn 0 Leyline and it's academic.
Game 2: I have a hand that beats Maniac. He has two Bazaars and Dredgers.
Game 3: I have a hand that beats Bazaar. He has the combo.
Round 4: Josh Barkon - Cagebreaker Dredge
Game 1: Turn 0 double Leyline got it done.
Game 2: I have the need, the need for speed! 2 Bazaars and all the gas in the world lead to a fast win. Apparently I had 2 Leyline as well. Go figure!
Round 5: ID with Ryan Tigro- Stoneblade
Quarterfinals: Matt Elias - Updated Turtle Dredge (luckily without Leylines)
Game 1: I have to mulligan to 2 but hit Leyline. Sadly Matt naturally has lands and Bloodghasts and kills me before I can find a Bazaar or fill my hand.
Game 2: I hit 3 Serum Powders on 7 without a Leyline or Bazaar. The fourth hand has both Leyline and Bazaar while also having the fourth Powder! That strong of a hand meant I won in short order.
Game 3: I have triple Bazaar in my 7 and a Troll but not resistance for Matt. Luckily he doesn't have a Dredger with his Bazaar and is unable to gas up to Dread Return the Elesh Norn he had! Whew, I'm able to put him away on turn 2 with Zealot.
Semi-Finals: Evan Hundertmark - Forgemaster
Game 1: I'm Dredge. He's Shops. I push through lethal by Dread Returning Woodfall Primus to bust up his mana, then Therapy'ing him with it and getting Bridge triggers, and then Dread Returning Zealot. I had misplayed that sequence earlier in the day and made sure to look for it afterwards.
Game 2: He has turn 1 Forgemaster, turn 2 Forgemaster. I delude myself into thinking I have a chance and then he reminds me he can fetch up Relic/Crypt at will and I remind him that I concede.
Game 3: He mulligans. I have Bazaar, Petrified Field, and Chalice and am able to swarm him under before he gets defenses set because he has to use his Wastes to slow me down and is hurt severely by my Chalice 0.
Finals: ID with Ryan Tigro - Stoneblade
He concedes so that I can acquire more points for the TDG invitational at the end of the year.
The deck was pretty awesome! I wish it had more cards like Ingot Chewer and Wispmare but the catch all anti-hate cards made SB'ing a bit easier. I definitely think Dredge's resurgence is long overdue. I'd love to claim that I played the Leylines main because I knew that there would be a ton of Dredge, but that would be a lie. It was Eric's deck and I changed nothing. It just happened to be very well poised for this event where Dredge came out of the woodwork! Whew!
