Wow.....This report's been up for almost 3 hours now, and Gottschall hasn't posted within 30 seconds of it going up? Weird.....

Anyways, big ups to those who Top 8'ed today! Especially Keith Seals, because Keith Seals is da sexiest mo-fo in Vintage.

Great event as always, Shawn.  Nice seeing some new faces and familiar ones (especially Gottshall).  Good seeing Joe, Keith, and Dom all in the top 4.  The Ramrod is strong with these ones.

First of all Chris, my last name is Gottshall. I will say I had fun despite my piss poor performance.
Here is a mini report of my day:

First, the list:

4 Cavern of Soul

2 Gaea's Cradle

5 Snow-Covered Forest

Black Lotus
Mox Emrald

4 Elvish Spirit Guide

1 Dryad Arbor

3 Llanowar Elves

4 Fyndhorn Elves

4 Elvish Mystic

4 Nettle Sentinel

4 Heritage Druid

4 Wirewood Symbiote

1 Priest of Titania

4 Elvish Visionary

4 Wirewood Hivemaster

1 Reclamation Sage

1 Craterhoof Behemoth

4 Green Sun's Zenith

4 Skullclamp

Sideboard:

4 Grafdigger's Cage

4 Deglamer

3 Reclamation Sage

2 Ravenous Trap

1 Gaea's Herald

1 Ezuri, Renegade Leader

Round 1 Unpowered UR Delver

Game 1 I crush him pretty hard
Game 2 he has turn one Delver turn 2 Delver turn 3 Delver and a Bolt.
Game 3 I had the game but he naturally draws his one of Engineered Explosives that he boarded in and blows me out.
0-1

Round 2 Gush Storm

Game 1 he combos turn two.
Game 2 we go back and forth for a while with tokens via my hivemaster and his pyromancer, but he eventually just goes nuts with Yawg Will.
0-2

Round 3 BWg Pox
Game 1 I empty my hand turn two thanks to top decking lotus after he duresses and sees all dudes, making his liliana really bad. I hardcast Craterhoof about turn 4.
Game 2 is fairly easy as I assemble the turn 3 win and take a ten or so minute turn.
1-2

Round 4 URG Landstill
Game one I thought I was fair off until I see my opponent drop Huntmaster of the Fells and I get wrecked.
Game 2 I have Ezuri to answer his EE. He only plays colorless lands and I win easily shortly after.
Game 3 I get wrecked hard because he assembles Life from the Loam with Strip Mine as well as Academy Ruins and EE... Sad Panda.
1-3

Round 5 against Magus Top Helm of Awakening Combo

Game 1 I win fairly quickly as he drew no business.
Game 2 he counted to ten and asked if we could go to game 3 after showing me tendrils.
Game 3 he assembled Magus, Top and Helm, draws his deck, makes near infinite storm, and tendrils.
1-4

So from what I see, I shouldn't have lost the Delver match, my opponent even said that. Other than that it just seemed like I played against Tendrils too much which I can't really do anything against. All in all I had fun though so that's all that matters.

People may think it's stupid to play a deck that they aren't used to seeing, when I say who are you to judge what I do? I may not win all the time, but I have fun playing what I play. It may appear to not feel very Vintage, but in fact this deck plays similarly to the storm decks you see, if you don't believe me proxy it up and test it for yourself.

On a different note, thank you Shawn for a great event. Congrats to Brian, Joe, Keith, Dom and the rest of the Top!

Also a thank you to Mickey Mahr for allowing me to test my deck against Workshops after the Swiss. The testing was proving my point that I in fact do not have a problem beating Workshops. The deck loses to the same hands any deck loses to, but it can out attrition Workshops fairly easily as Mickey soon found out.

I had a blast playing Dredge. I borrowed the deck on a whim from a friend, David Kaplan, because I really think the deck is being criminally underplayed locally. It's powerful, and as people go further and further away from dedicated quality hate cards, it gets better. I played Lance's version to transform into a Fishy deck w/ a combo kill. I only played about 15 or so games with it on the day, and I found the Mayor to be underwhelming. It could certainly be that my opponents just had good hands when it came out on turn 1, but it never did anything but chump block. I almost certainly wish it was 4 Dark Confidant and then a random other good card instead of Mayor but I trust Lance has vetted it thoroughly and will trust him. I believe David told me he had cut "a card" for a third Bridge. I definitely was happy with the 3rd Bridge, but he told me that he thinks it was a Dakmor Salvage that he cut after we spoke about the deck's performance. Having a hard time recurring Bloodghast was an issue for me several times and that can be directly traced to it. If I was to play this list again I'd likely cut Riftstone Portal and a Darkblast for two more Dakmor Salvage. Portal feels very win more, though again it could be that I'm just not playing G2/G3 optimally. Ancestral was the stone cold nuts. I don't understand any Dredge deck that does not play it and/or Brainstorm.  It's seems to be even better in decks that are trying to fight over hate pieces than in this one, and it pushed me through clumps to wins several times.

I played against BWg(transform), Keeper(transform), URg Delver(stayed), Merfolk(transformed), Oath(stayed), and Brian Kelly(stayed). I don't think it's correct to transform against Oath. Perhaps this is why Lance doesn't play this all the time, as any time Oath is big you are going to have a really hard time winning G2/G3 against their hate because you can't fight it and can't really afford to swap decks. I didn't want to swap against RUG as I thought that the Witch for Maniac plan was too fragile with all of his spot removal. It might have been right to do a hybrid style here but I'm likely wrong. Keeper went 3 and I lost to a top decked Mox for Tinker and then to a TV+K that came down after a Jace had a party.

I'm the guy with the NWCS deck. Thanks to everyone on TMD who worked on this deck, especially Zherbus and Rich Shay.

Thanks Shawn for running a good event. This was my first constructed tournament in many years, and it was good to meet so many vintage players. Hope to be there again next time!

Congrats on the finish Tom.  Thank you for the right up its good to hear another point of view on the deck.  The mayors are there to beat up on fair decks, like shops, delver, UW angels, ect.  Once he flips against these decks he ends the game in short order.  The card that was cut for the bridge was the second dakmor.  I found that 2 bridges was sufficient for me to combo off consistently with lab maniac, but if you are new to the deck 3 bridges certainly makes comboing easier.  Portal is purely there for the workshops match up, it's completely useless in pretty much every other one.  You often need it to push a dread return through spheres.  You should have definitely transformed against RUG.  You can usually abuse stinkweed imps and darkblasts to hold their aggro plan in check until you get a mayor or feel safe to combo off.  The only problem with ancestral and brainstorm is that U mana is not reliable in all these lists.  This one in particular has 6 ways of casting them (including lotus), making ancestral a pretty high variance card choice.  As for Bob I used to play him in greater numbers, Mayor was just a metagame choice at the time I played this list, since bob is not good against aggro when the average CMC is as high as it is in this list.  Oath is definitely the reason I don't play this at every vintage tournament I go to, it's nearly impossible to win post board.  However, while playing it I feel favored against everything else.  After much brewing, I finally have a newer version capable of dealing with oath now though.

Cool. Were the Wastelands, err, good? I don't get it.

Yes. They were stellar.

Turn 1 bazaar, turn 2 waste is probably one of the most disgustingly broken feelings I've ever had playing magic.

Thanks to everyone for the comment/congrats and to Shawn for consistently hosting great events with the most punctual reporting on the globe.  There was a request for a tournament report and a different request for a primer on 4-Creature Oath of Druids (aka Salvagers Oath, aka 5-Creature Oath of Druids, aka 9-creature Oath of Druids, aka Kelly Oath, aka "The Merry Go Round"); if I have time later in the week I'll see what I can do.  Congrats to both Keiths for making T8, and mad props to Hrishi for Eureka and Alan's very intriguing Huntmaster of the Fells Landstill deck.  Great meeting returning Vintage player Ryan Eberheart; hope to see you again!

Thanks Tom.  Regrettably, I won't be taking your public awareness campaign for more Dredge hate to heart.  Only fair decks should worry about Dredge.  Wink

Sorry for the late reply to this report.
I was the lucky guy in match one who happened to top deck the EE at just the right moment. It was almost a shame, I really wanted Elves to do well in Vintage.
This was my first trip to The Players Guild, and it was well worth the 2 hour drive!
I played an unpowered U/R Delver deck with no intention of doing well, just wanted the practice of playing unpowered against full on powered decks in preparation of playing at Worlds in October. My day consisted of 1 win and 4 loses, but it was a great time scrubbing out!
The absolute highlight of the day for me, was my son making the top 8 playing my MUD deck. This was his first top 8 in Vintage, and I couldn’t be happier for him!
Thanks to all of my opponents for being an outright delight to play this silly game with!
