Right now we don't, but I'd like to permit them.  I'll talk to the Store, and see what they think.  My initial response is that they should be legal, but only if the entire deck is double or triple sleeved (the latter being preferred).

UPDATE: The Store owner is cool with that.  I'll update the OP.

I'm very envious of all who can attend this gathering (living in Connecticut makes it difficult to attend). Hope to see a tournament report and pictures/deck lists. Also, great idea on collectors edition!

I think I'll come by and watch some matches - I don't currently have a deck but I love the format.  Hope to see some of you there Smile.

I have four pieces of CE/LE power (2 Sapphires and 2 Jets) I can loan out if someone needs them because you don't have power and want to play in this event.

Sorry to announce that I probably won't able to come to this.  My dad is very, very ill and I may need to fly to Ohio this weekend.

I have 87 papers to grade this weekend. I choose career over old school this time.

I had a professor that just graded on the grammar of the first paragraph, that might speed things up for you and I bet it wasn't far off haha

Sorry to miss you Stephen, best wishes to your father and family.

We had 10 competitors, and played 5 rounds of Swiss with a split pool at the end based on record (payout to 2-2-1 or better). A nontrivial fraction of the Alpha and Beta dual lands that exist on earth appeared to be in the room. The vibe was very casual and I think all had a good time. Lots of pretty crazy plays, from Timetwister being cast twice on turn 3 (thanks to Verduran Enchantress engine) to Dustin's army of walls.

Here are some pics I took:

Game state Enchantress vs. Mana Vortex

Armageddon, in response, Boomerang Volcanic Island in response, with no other cards in hand, and Eliot at 2 life...

My Time Vault/Animate Artifact/Instill Energy combo deck

Super fun event! Had a blast losing with Enchantress. I'll post up the deck tomorrow.

by papers, I meant Math HW papers.  This is my first time teaching kids something they hadn't been taught before (probability via Venn Diagrams, etc), and I have to let them know I will notice EVERYTHING, do the work, get the points, etc. also, recovering from being sick for a month straight.

Thank Aahz for wonderful pics. I had a red/white Whelp/ANgel/Sword/Bolt/Disenchant/Shatter deck sleeved up.

Thank Aahz for wonderful pics. I had a red/white Whelp/ANgel/Sword/Bolt/Disenchant/Shatter deck sleeved up.
Not my pics. Presumably they are the work of Eliot (thanks for posting them!).

I decided to play Enchantress despite not having it "completed" according to my proper Old School sensibilities (I played with a few Revised and Collector's Edition cards, though I stand by the color error Fourth Edition Enchantress). The deck is mostly copied from the work of others (see original Old School page from last May, I think). Never got a chance to test much other than a game or two against BC waiting for the tournament to start. Built the sideboard on site, so it's terrible yet awesome.

Round 1 vs Heiner. As he noted during the match, Enchantress isn't his deck's best matchup, though I had some excellent draws to help me along. The plays and board states generated were quite absurd and I can't possibly reconstruct them from memory (I feel like there are probably some pics out there though). I do recall chatting with Heiner during one game and telling him I had been thinking about building a Land Equilibrium deck, probably spurred on after he played Mana Vortex, to which he responded by playing Land Equilibrium. Crazy match!

Round 2 vs John. We chat about pimp cards throughout the match like we usually do. My notes and memory fail me, but I know that Moat entered (and left) the board multiple times, occasionally in the company of Gravity Sphere (Thunder Spirits fly over Moat). Spirited Linked Savannah Lions. Factory beatdown. Digging with Sylvan. Death by Lightning Bolt. Waiting behind Moat. I went off once, but lost the match 1-2.

Round 3 vs Stephen. We have a nice conservation throughout and after the match. Hymn to Tourach does some work. Disruption plus beatdown kill me dead, though I managed to Sylvan-suicide in defiance once. He showed me his gorgeous Summer Energy Flux.

Round 4 vs BC. I'm too slow, he's too fast, and Counterspells. At least games 1 and 3. Channel-Fireball after drawing lots of cards (and then some, then some more, ...) in game 2.

Round 5 vs Dustin. I don't know what he's one (though I saw a Word of Command and Diamond Valley earlier from across the table). Turns out it's Lich. With City of Brass. And Pestilence. And Walls. Pestilence gets me in game 1 (after a long slog through the Dark Heart of the Wood). Game 2, Enchantresses get their card draw on. We have 3:30 left in the round, but everyone there decides to suspend time temporarily so we can finish the match (because Enchantress vs Lich. there is no valid rebuttal). Game 3, I play poorly (which is what I do best!) and my deck decides to help by not giving me what I need. Death by Pestilence again.

Sylvan Library is insane. Probably needed a second Dark Heart of the Wood. Candelabra was not as impressive as I hoped.

Here is Enchantress in her full glory, pimp-fail blemishes and all:

I was really impressed that we were able to get 10 people at this second event. I worried that the novelty of the format may have worn off. Happy to see that that was not the case.  Steve, it's unfortunate that you were not able to make it. We all appreciate your efforts in organizing this event, and I hope that things are well with your family.

I was also happy to see that we got at least one new player. Brian was a MTG player back in the day, and showed up to his first ever Magic tournament yesterday to play Old School. He went 3-1-1 running unpowered UR Control Burn, which is pretty damn impressive.

I played the same deck that I played at the last event (Mono Blue Artifacts) with just a couple changes. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any pictures of my deck.  I started 0-2, but finished strong at 3-2.

That's really great.  I'll try to get another one schedule ASAP, as this is my favorite format.

How did folks feel about the CE/IE?  Sounds like it may make it alot easier for more people to play.  I think we should adopt that as the norm.  It's certainly in the spirit of the format.

This is the Vintage Tournament Announcements forum. This tournament is not Vintage.

I would be more sympathetic if this format were at least asking people to play a version of Vintage that existed in the past. But that isn't what this is. This is a new format that has never existed before, and doesn't reflect Vintage of the past or present. Please keep discussion of this format in the "Other Formats" forum.

I'd personally like to see more of these posts, why don't you create a forum section for 93/94 magic so that we vintage players have a place to post about it.

I have to say I disagree about segregating discussion and announcements about Old School into a separate forum. The population of players interested in Vintage and Old School is basically the same, and there are only about two dozen threads per year in this forum; it's not like it's being spammed up with two or three Old School posts. If they were relegated to another forum I bet many people, myself included, would never see them, and turnout for these tournaments which are already hard to get many participants for would suffer.

Hi, I'm Brian, the new person at the tournament. I had a great time and hope to play Old School Magic again sometime soon.

Here's a photo of my deck:

This is Steve, who played the discard/LD 3-color Black deck at the tournament. I finished 4-1, losing only to Eliot's white weenie deck. I had a blast playing this format. There is no better way to make use of some of my favorite cards, and I really look forward to playing more of this. It was great meeting everyone new, and reconnecting with some folks that I had met at prior Vintage events in CA.

Here is a pretty neat picture from game 3 of my last round against Brian. I had 3 factories (of which he could block 1, so I used Maze to untap/pump). This game started with him playing land, black vise, and me returning with land, mox, lotus, ritual, mind twist for 4 + sinkhole. It took a while for me to find a win condition after that (factory), but a timely Wheel of Fortune got me 2 more factories, plus enough discard to punish Brian a second time.

Here is my deck. I am only slightly ashamed of playing 2 FBB Scrublands (I have unlimiteds, but didn't want to play with more white borders than the 1 Summer Energy Flux in my sideboard). Most of the rest of the deck is stuff that I have had signed over the years (Garfield + artist-signed power). I loved being able to finally play my Larry Niven-signed Nevinyrral's Disks (that I had only recently gotten signed by Mark Tedin as well).

I love seeing pics of these old decks. Any chance anyone has a copy of Inquest #1 sitting around? I'd like to see a pic of the "Bayou Lightning" deck that is in it, i remember wanting to build that as a kid.

There was another old decklist too, probably from an early scrye that was mono black I remember wanting to build as a kid, It has Sinkholes, Hymns, Hippies, and Demonic Hordes. I'd love to see that decklist but I don't have enough information to narrow it down. When I first learned of this format I immediately wanted to build that deck. I'm running a mono-black juzam deck now Smile
