It is becoming apparently to me that I am sitting on a lot of valuable magic cards that I will never use for many decks I will never build. It is also apparent to me that I really want to put the down payment on a house and maybe, just maybe, I should sell some of my cards to do that.

I wanted to ask what people think is the best way to move collections, or at least parts of them, and get the best value for them. I have power and duals and such so, it's a large number of valuable cards, but I feel like if I do it online I run the risk of getting the crap taxed out of me, and if I do it at a con the dealer may not have enough money on them. Should I be looking for a physical retailer, is a Grand prix worse than a convention like PAX? Should I try to sell them piecemeal?

Awaiting your responses!

If the con lasts a few days, you can show up on one day and get an estimate from each dealer and choose the one offering the best price and come back the next day if he doesn't have enough money at that time. Most dealers won't have any problem getting the funds if you give them 12-24 hours.

It depends on how much work you are willing to do.  Ebay will fetch highest prices, but you'll have to pay fees and take time to upload, post, correspond, and ship.  If you are dealing with a large value amount, I would try to deal with a dealer one-on-one rather than in a convention, if you want to go the dealer route.  good luck.

I went through this over the past year and advise going in this order:
 - ask around to friends to see if anyone is looking to buy into Vintage or Legacy; if so, sell direct to them for ~TCG low-mid prices.
 - Post your stuff on the High End MTG group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/highendmtg/). Gets a lot of traffic and people rarely get screwed there.
 - Sell your stuff on MTG Salvation.
 - Try and trade your smaller stuff in batches up to bigger things that are easier to move (duals, power). Do this in person and/or through the various online trading venues out there -- MTG Salvation, etc.*
 - eBay.
 - Sell to a dealer.

*What's that site that lets you trade cards for a trading-only currency which you can use to facilitate other trades on the site? I forget. Its home page has an animation of trades happening around the globe.
