I lost a close three to Brian I had quite a few spectators, and the match was streamed.

Lost 0-2 to Wappla.
G1 I choose to play conservatively rather than take a risky opening knowing that I probed him t1 and his hand was pretty bad, but his topdecks help him a lot, while mine don't change anything so my line ends up costing me the game.
G2 just an insane amount of variance in his direction, nothing I can do my opponent has it all and my draws are pretty awful.

I played James Saltsman this week. He was on Terra Nova (I'm assuming), I'm on Thanks For Playing Artifacts.dec

Game one he gets a solid start with some Thorns and Revoker on Time Vault (which I have in play). I have a Welder but haven't found anything to Weld on either side. I steal his Revoker with Dack, he copies Revoker naming Dack, has a couple more lock pieces and finds a Golem. I'm eventually able to get a revoker into his graveyard to take care of the Null Rod in play, which gives me the mana I need to Hurkyl's him. Put the game away shortly after, tutoring for Key and Welding the Vault back in.

Game two we both mulligan, he has a mana light hand (wasteland and Factory) and a Chalice on 0. I have a turn 1 Welder. I Chewer his Chalice, he attacks with Factory, I weld the Chalice back into play, cast a vault and tutor up key for the win.

Not a great matchup for James, 4 maindeck welders and Dacks makes life difficult for a workshop, but good games regardless!

2-0 Me.

So I played SeanOhh and Stormanimagus back to back and here's how it went down.

I got the better of SeanOhh in two, and I think that the games basically came down to the facts that almost all of my cards are live in that matchup and that he topdecked like a skunk.  I was anticipating a lot of workshop and dredge, since I figured people would want to shore up the last few rounds, so I was packing lots of artifact and shop hate.  That worked out alright, and I the limited amount of cards I drew compared to his deck was enough to win given his dead draws.

The match against Stormy was a boondoggle.  My internet connection kept burping and we'd lose the entire game.  He was nice enough to reset once we did that, but even so, I was doing really well Game 1 before the bad times struck.  The games did not feel terribly lopsided, but he managed to keep the control roll up just enough before finally Mentorin' for the win.

Just played my match with David Kaplan since he will be busy this weekend due to NYSE. I lost Game one fairly easily since that's what storm decks generally do against shops, especially when they lose the die roll (1 to his 14).
Game two I play a bunch of stuff turn one including a Dack set up turn two Vault Key.
Game Three was close but I Pondered into a Hurkyls that I used at his end phase to comeback and hardcast Sphinx of the Steel Wind for the Win! I had many spectators watching so they can share anything I didn't.
This puts me at 5-4 for the season! Should be good for playoffs or at least tie breakers for playoffs!!!

wappla 2 - 1 Tom Dixon

Game 1: Tom wins the roll and opens with Chalice 0 and Sphere. Although I have a Workshop and two Golems, Sphere keeps me off them. The only spell I resolve this game is a lone Revoker.

Game 2: On the play, I lead with Null Rod. He has a early Golem, but I Ghost Quarter his Shop, take a hit, then Metamorph his Golem. He doesn't draw another land until my board is overwhelming.

Game 3: My opening hand is Ruby, Factory, Factory, Factory, Mutavault, Ancient Tomb, Dismember. I'm inexperienced in the mirror, but on the draw, this hand seems legitimately great. Tom opens with a interesting Chalice @ 2, shutting off Null Rod and Revoker. I draw into two copy spells. Tom has to burn his Metamorph on his Factory to keep up with my eventual five manlands. I draw into Batterskull, casting it and copying it with Steel. Tom's card in hand is a Duplicant and his board is full of mana and nothing to do with it.

I beat White Lotus, 2-0.

Game 1 he mulled to Turn 1 Defense Grid with Preordain, Dark Ritual (no outlet), and Oath of Druids with no Orchard.  I countered everything except Oath of Druids and used Jace to fateseal several Orchards to the bottom.  The last straw was when I paid 5 through Grid to use the Spell Pierce mode of Izzet Charm on his Dark Ritual.

Game 2, he died to 3 Spirit tokens, 1 Containment Priest, 1 Ethersworn Canonist, and 2 Force of Wills.

I beat SeanOhh 2-0 with my Mentor monstrosity.

Game 1 was just very awkward for both of us. Mana Crypt did it's usual job of halving my opponent's life total and Mentor did the rest despite me drawing 1 land in 18 cards (2 moxen for the mentor) and sitting on a dig and a dack the whole game that would have been castable if I drew 1 land. He really whiffed on red land early which bought me the tempo and time I needed to get there. Awkward awkward game for both of us.

Game 2 was a little more interesting at first but it spiraled out of control late. I opened on double misstep double plow and only 1 misstep ended up being useful to eat an early Goblin Welder. Early Stony Silence kept his mana at bay but then he gets dack and starts ripping through his deck while I topdeck. . . nothing. This goes on for many turns. A Daretti and Tezz eventually join the party on his end, but he still doesn't have an out to the stony and he can't seem to find a Wurmcoil to bin. After using an Ancestral to find Mentor I finally have a threat to start chipping away at his life total and he's down to 0 cards in hand at the beginning of each turn. I steal a mox of his with a Dack of my own to reduce the value of his Tolarian and simultaneously make Tezz's ultimate way worse. It's an insane game where he has 3 plainswalkers in play for much of the end of the game just chugging away and finding him nothing relevant in the face of an active Stony Silence. My Mentor eventually delivers the goods with a turn of spell chaining and gross prowessing. Weird note. I did not cast a single Gush or even see a Gush either game. crazy!

GGs Sean!

I won 2-0 versus MaxCDawg.

Max wins the die roll, but mulls to 4 and concedes after I resolve a Chalice at 1 and have a Sphere, Thorn, and Mutavault on field by turn 2. Game 2 is even more unfortunate for Max since he kept losing connection and decided to concede to me.

This concludes the Swiss Rounds of Season One of The Mana Drain Vintage League, we have had some interesting decks, some innovation, some amazing plays, some disappointments but now we move to the next stage: playoffs!

Here are the final standings after the Swiss Rounds:

TMD League Standings

1. Brian Kelly (8-1)

2. Dave Kaplan (5-4) (3)

3. Matthew Gottshall (5-4) (1)

4. James Saltsman (5-4) (0)

5. White Lotus (5-4) (-2)

6. Stormanimagus (4-5)

7. Tom Dixon (4-5)

8. Sean Ottaway (4-5)

9. Wappla (3-6)

10. MaximumCDawg (2-7)

As stated I went with game wins for tie breakers due to time constraints, we had 4 players tied at 5-4 but only three could make it to playoffs. MaximumCDawg having gotten last place, will not be joining us for Season Two, congrats to the 9 who get to continue on and a big congrats to the Top 4!

Playoffs will start on Sunday July 12th, will be best of 5 matches with 3 decks of the players choice. The first round of playoffs is Myself (3 seed) vs James Saltsman (4 seed) where higher seed has choice of play. The winner of this round plays David Kaplan (2 seed) on July 19th and then the winner of that plays Brian Freaking Kelly (1 seed) on July 26th.

Tune in Next Sunday and watch the first round of playoffs!

Brian wanted me to point out that he, being the highest placed player in the league (8-1), had Dragonlords in all three of his trimester decks... Just something for you all to think about.

Whoa kinda sad you cut me out of t4 after making that poll where people voted for round robin. We could have played it out 3 out of 4.

My last deck really punished me going 0/3 in matches and 0-6 in games (I was at 5/1 and 10-5 at the end of Week 6). Janky decks get janky results, I will do better next one.

Anyways, I wish you guys good luck for the Playoffs and look forward to watching the stream.

Yeah, I scooped it up and ID ed from my last match.   I had countered all of the shops players early plays with annul and just recalled into lots of mana; he had 3 caeds left;  game was going great.   Then,  the connection broke.  Again. This happened a lot during my prior match,  too.  Combined with the fact that scheduling was always a hassle, I just called it in.   There are better candidates for the online league; I'll stick to paper magic!

Thy will be done.

Although the Dragonlord is most satisfied with this outcome, I found your in-game commentary to be hilarious and entertaining.  You will be missed.

Not that I'm trying to quibble about it, but what's NSFW about that picture?  The man likes his Ojutai.

Canonically, the blue Dragons Ojutai and Silumgar are both male.  Given the historical favoritism shown to that color, that might be construed as a step backwards in PR terms.
