This card seems awful in most formats, but it does seem good in vintage on turn 1.

If it lands early in the game, you have a vigilance creature that advances the board.  Combined with Noble Hierarch and Tangle Wire, you would be applying pressure while advancing the board in your favor.

Green has a lot of subtle utility as a color, especially artifact and enchantment destruction.  Subtle ways to pump the creatures past 1/1 in pendelhaven, mayor of avabruck, and hierarch.

I had written this card off as a bulk rare when I first read it.  And it very likely still is, but if there is a format that could do something with this creature, it is vintage.

A green/white hatebears deck with gaddock teeg, thalia, quasili pridemage, reclamation sage, phyrexian revoker, mayor of avabruck, containment priest, spirit of the labyrinth, thorn of amyfest, null rod and tangle wire doesn't sound bad to me in theory.

A 2/2 vigilance mana dork would make the cut...but the fact that he is jumping through hoops to be that on turn 3 at best seems questionable.  Actually scrap questionable, a mana dork that you can't tap on turn 2 is not a mana dork, it doesn't advance the board, the board should already be advanced by turn 3.  He needed to be printed with haste.

So the best case scenario is a powered up Steward of Valeron on turn 3? The worst case scenario is you are stuck with a Fugitive Wizard against an army of Golems, Factories, Shamans, Elementals, Monks, Zombies, etc?

I cannot see this card being viable - the payoff simply is not there and when it's bad, it's really bad.

"Why are we making bad decks? I mean, honestly, what is our reason for doing this?"

"Is this a Vintage deck or a Cube deck?" "Is it sad that you have to ask?"

"Is that a draft deck?" "Why do people keep asking that?"

Random conversations...

I feel like the hate bears deck needs noble hierarchs 5-8 before the deck starts to truely be competative.

the creature basically has to tap for green/white/blue mana and deal damage while being tapped for mana.

this card is at least in that ilk.

I agree that it's really slow.  It probably needed to have haste.  The fact that it can't tap for mana until turn 3 is a major problem, so is the fact that it's a terrible card to topdeck.

This card is less reliable than llanowar elves... Standard players don't even like it.

Not a fan. If you make it t4, it does nothing, if you make it turn one and it might be a threat, it gets countered for 2 life.

This card is absolutely horrible.

I cant imagine any deck, for any reason, running this in a format where any other consistent one G mana dork is legal. I would rather play Elves of Deep Shadow, even if off colour.

This card is a pure concession from WoTC given they will no longer be printing turn 1 mana dorks, apparently.

Shouldn't it have just been always add a mana of any color, and the renown give it vigilance and +2/+2 ?  So turn 2 it's a choice of multicolor mana producer ramp guy or attacks to turn into an awesome guy turn 3.  Instead of just being terrible all the time.

This quote says it all...I wouldn't want to play this guy in LIMITED, let alone constructed.
